James was born circa 1818 at Accomack Co, VA. The 1830 census, while he was still in his father's household, places the birth of James Mears of James between 1815 and 1820. Later census records, when ages were given in exact years, do not agree as to the year in which he was born. The 1870 census appears the most accurate, when it gives his age as 52, putting his birth at 1818. The 1850 census puts it at 1817. However, if he had been born in 1817 he would have been age 21 in 1838 when he married and would not have needed a guardian..1 At the sale of James Mears' personal property on 1 Nov 1837, James Mears of James bought two articles, his father gun for $2.00 and a tea kettle for 96 cents (Acc Co Inventories, 1837-39, p. 418). James chose a guardian on on 25 June 1838 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James Mears, orphan of James Mears, chose William W. Oliver as his guardian (Acc Co Orders, 1836-1840, p. 348).. He married Mary 'Molly' Mears, daughter of Kendall (of Litt.) Mears and Catharine 'Katy' (-----), on 25 June 1838 at Accomack Co, VA. William W. Oliver was the security on the M.L.B. of James Mears, ward of William W. Oliver, and Mary Harrison, widow of Evans..2 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James Mears of Jas. the head of HH#920, a 33 year old wheelwright. Listed with him were the following Mears: Molly, age 36; Bagwell, age 10; James, age 8; Sarah, age 6; Columbus, age 2; and George, age 1/12..1 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1860 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James Mears the head of HH#880, a 45 year old wheelwright with personal property valued at $100. Listed with him were the following Mearses: Molly, age 48; Sarah A., age 15; Columbus, age 11; Geo., age 10; John, age 4; and Mary, age 2..3 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1870 at Locust Mount PO, St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James Mears the head of HH#LM164, a 52 year old farmer. Listed with him were the following Mearses: Molly, a 57 year old house keeper; Columbus, a 21 year old farm laborer; Geo. W., a 19 year old farm laborer; and Mary, age 12..4 James died on 19 August 1884 at Powellton, Acc Co, VA. The Acc Co Death Register show a Jas. W. Mears died on 29 Mar 1889 in St. George Parish of heart disease at the age of 71 years. He was the son of Jas. Mears, born in Acc Co, a laborer and widower. His son Colmore M. Mears gave the information. (NOTE: This puts his birth at 1818 & Colmore could have been Columbus.) James W. Mears, of Powellton, died intestate on 19 Aug 1884, of heart disease, according to an item in the 23 Aug 1884 issue of The Peninsula Enterprise, p. 3. However, that same article shows him as age 70, which puts his birth at 1814. (NOTE: Powellton later became known as Wachapreague.).5,6,7
