Anzele was born on 16 September 1757 at Bradford Neck, Acc Co, VA. According to Rev. John W.A. Elliott's Ledger Book, she was in Bradford's Neck in 1758, some 3 years the junior of her husband. Her parents were Edmond Bradford and a Miss Andress, who were married in the early part of the 18th century..4,2 She married Rev. William Elliott, son of Thomas Elliott (mechanic) and Ann Wescott, on 10 December 1781 at Accomack Co, VA.5,6 According to Rev. John W.A. Elliott's Ledger Book, Anzela proved to be a true help mate, a woman remarkable for intelligence, industry, and real worth. They soon commenced farming in Upshur's Neck, worked hard, and raised a family of children. Of their children more will be said. They proved to be a family respected in their community. Anzela Bradford was one among the best of women. I am unable to know or where to commence or how to describe the true virtues of that good woman. I think I could safely say that never was there guile from her lips. She was a woman of great natural intelligence, a Bible reader and practiced what it taught. I don't think she was ever heard to speak of any person only to their praise. She and her husband lived in peace and happiness for many years amid many trying scenes and deep afflictions. They raised a virtuous family of children and brought them up in the virtues and admonitions of the Lord. She commenced a religious life early under the ministration of a Baptist minister, Mr. Layfield, and by him was baptized by immersion and became a member of the Hollies Baptist church, held her relation at Hollies Meetinghouse being the first Baptist church in the county. She was a consistent Christian. She closely studied human nature, the human system, and the diseases incident, and many of the remedies found in the folios (fields?). Hence she was a doctoress. It was interesting to see her herbs prepared in their season, and placed away for use, also her botanic garden. Her various herbs raised and prepared for use also her apothecary in which she had prepared a remedy for all common diseases bottled up. The 25 years that I was acquainted with the family a doctor was never called in but once, and that was to perform a surgical operation. She was successful in doctor(ing) bone _____? and had many cases of that disease. Generally cured without losing a bone. Had cured some cancers(?) of a certain class, but bilious fevers, colic, ague, and fever and all such diseases she had the remedy and confidence in applying them successfully. Made a great many cures and was careful to apply the balm of the Gospel to their mortal diseases in this department she was the wonder of her age.2 Anzele died on 7 September 1841 at age 83.4 Her body was interred at Bradford-Burton, Quinby, Acc Co, VA. Her tombstone shows her as Anzele Elliott, widow of William Elliott, 16 Sep 1757 - 7 Sep 1841..4 On 30 Dec 1850 it was recorded that William Elliott, Rev. Soldier, was a resident of this county and died circa 23 Sep 1836 leaving a widow, Anxell Elliott; she died 7 Oct 1841 leaving one child, Anzell Wallace who still survives. William Elliott and Anzell married 10 Dec 1781.6 Administration of Anzele's estate was filed on 28 April 1851 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Peter F. Browne was named to settle the estate of Anzele Elliott. James W. Custis was security.7 On 28 Apr 1851, Peter F. Browne, administrator of Anzele Elliott appeared in court & made the declaration, in order to obtain for the child of Anzele Elliott, the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed 4 Jul 1836. He declared that it appears by satisfactory evidence that Anzele Elliott was the widow of William Elliott, who was according to his declaration made in court on 1 Aug 1832, a private in the Militia Company of Capt. William Polk, which was attached to the Regiment Commanded by Col. Southy Simpson and that he was principally engaged in guarding and defending the exposed places on the sea and Bay side. It appears by the family record that she was married to William Elliott on 10 Dec 1781 and that her husband died on 23 Sep 1836 and that she has remained a widow ever since that period and to the day of her death.5

Elliott witnessed the will of Thomas A. Elliott..5 She married William Wallace, son of Daniel Wallace, on 16 December 1816 at Accomack Co, VA. Joshua Burton Jr. was the security on the M.L.B. of Wm. Wallis of Dan. and Anseley Elliott of Wm..6 Anzele was named in her father's will on 20 April 1832 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as a daughter Angela Wallace in the will of William Elliott Sr..2 According to Rev. John W.A. Elliott's Ledger Book, Anzele was remarkable from early childhood. She embraced religion in early life and lived it to her last moment, being 75 years old. First remarkable trait was her industry and her devotion to religion. She thirsted for religious books, her reading copiously and her retentive memory of what she read, her studious habits and informed mind made a concordance and a commentary on the Holy Scriptures. Very few theologians that had a better understanding of the Scriptures than her. You may compare with the distinguished women of past history, but few or any could exceed her in reading or in thinking. She comprehended all she read and was ready to give points - and authors in proof of her position. She was the standing record of her community. All she ever heard she retained: marriages, births, deaths, and all such records were recorded on the tablets of her thoughts to be read by the mind's eye when the facts were called for at any day. In her old age to ask her where she was fifty years ago on that day, and in a short time she would give the place and circumstances of that day. Her delight was in the law of the Lord, would make any sacrifice to attend to the service of the sanctuary. On returning home would keep a diary, noting the text and the points. Her peculiar thirst for religious society. She was never known to enter on the lively of the day of detailing the givens or hearing the common news of the day as other persons, but in company if the conversation was not instructing and of a religious cast she said nothing or engaged in some religious reading, asking to be excused for her silence or abstinence. She was never idle, her ideas was that idleness was the inroad to evil. In her domestic duties she performed them with a sense of duty. Her house hours for devotion and reading was also duly met and fulfilled. A volume might be written on the remarkable Christian character of this woman. Enough to say that all may know she tried to do her duty here. The last of her years was of severe trial and deep affliction, all which she endured with Christian candor and fortitude. Her opinion was not only to act, but to learn to suffer affliction under the severest trials of life. She often quoted St. Paul that our afflictions were but for a moment, would work our a far more and an eternal weight of glory. She possessed a spirit of missionary enterprise. Died finally in a family that was strange but treated her nobly and her last moments was tranquil and peace.7 Anzele was listed with her husband in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Ansley Wallace, age 59 in HH#616 headed by Wm. Wallace, a 69 year old sailor..8 On 30 Dec 1850 it was recorded that William Elliott, Rev. Soldier, was a resident of this county and died circa 23 Sep 1836 leaving a widow, Anxell Elliott; she died 7 Oct 1841 leaving one child, Anzell Wallace who still survives. William Elliott and Anzell married 10 Dec 1781.9 It appears to the court that William Elliott was a resident of this county and died in the same on 23 Sep 1836. At the time of his death he left a widow, whose name was Anzele Elliott and she died on 7 Oct 1841. And Anzele Wallace formerly Anzele Elliott was the only surviving child at the time of the death of her father William Elliott and at the time of the death of her mother Anzele Elliott.10 Anzele died on 20 August 1865 at age 74.1 Her body was interred at Bradford-Burton, Quinby, Acc Co, VA. Her tombstone shows her as Anzele Wallace, the wife of Wm. Wallace and the daughter of Wm. & Anzele Elliott..1

James was born circa 1780 at Accomack Co, VA. James Mears was born when his father was about 50 years old. He was only about 5 year old when his father died in 1785. He was raised by his mother on the Armitrader land and after 1810, his name appeared in Acc Co records as James Mears (of M) or James Mears (of Molly) to distinguish him from younger James Mearses of the time.. James was named in his father's will on 17 December 1784 at Accomack Co, VA. James was left no land by his father and the records do not show him buying land..1 He married Hester N. 'Hessy' Harmon, daughter of John H. (of Henry) Harmon and Ann 'Nanny' Burton, on 10 October 1806 at Accomack Co, VA. John Harmon was the security and gave consent on the M.L.B. of James Mears and Hessy N. Harmon of Jno..2 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1810 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. James Mears was the only Mears of this name in the 1810 census of Acc Co. He was aged 26 to 45, with his wife, under 26 years of age, and two sons under age 10..3 He married Sally Wallace on 28 March 1814 at Accomack Co, VA. James Mears of James and George Beach were the security on the M.L.B. of James Mears and Sally Wallace..2 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1820 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James Mears (of M), aged 26 to 45, with a wife between 26 and 45 years of age, a son under 10 years, a son aged 10 to 15 years, and again without daughters. It is apparent that James Mears and his first wife last a son between 1810 and 1820 or he had moved into another household. Later records incicate he had moved..3 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1830 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James Mears (of M), age 40 to 50 years. Evidently his oldest son had married and there were 2 other males in the household, one aged 5 to 10 years, and another age 10 to 15 years. His wife was between age 40 and 50 years and there were 2 females under age 10 years. There was one other female in the household, aged 60 to 70 years..4 James died in October 1837.5 Administration of James's estate was filed on 30 October 1837 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that David Mears was named to settle the estate of James Mears. Garrison Burton & Jacob Bell were the securities.5 The inventory and sale of his personal property took place on 1 Nov 1837 (Acc Co Inventories, 1837-1839, p. 418). The list of items cover a little less than 3 pages. Household furniture included: two spinning wheels, a square pine table, six windsor chairs, a flag chair, a small blue chest, a large blue chest, a walnut table, a pine safe, and other items. There was no farm equipment listed. Rather, a number of articles, including saws, planes, adzes, hammers, chissels, augers, "a lot of wheel timber," and "a lot of spoke timber," show that James Mears was a wheelwright. He also owned livestock.

According to Dr. Bill Burton this Thomas Burton was appointed an Ensign on 11 Oct 1777..5,6 Thomas was named as administrator of an estate on 25 February 1778 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Joshua Burton was granted to Thomas Burton with John Parker & Levi Nock securities.2 Thomas was named as a guardian on 1 August 1787 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Garrison Burton was granted to Thomas Burton with William Garrison security.8 According to George Savage of Michigan, this Thomas Burton turned from the Church of England to Methodist in 1800.6 According to Whitelaw, Thomas Burton's part of tract A65 began a little southeast of Rose Cottage, continued on down the present Finney's Creek to its junction with Nickawampus Creek, and then up the north side of that, and it included a small triangle of land west of the seaside road. In 1735 Thomas Burton left as 500 acres to his son Joshua, who died intestate in 1778 and was succeeded by a son Thomas, who in 1821 left the land east of the road to a son Joshua, and the triangular part to his son Garrison. The former was the Rev. Joshua Burton, a much beloved Methodist minister, who owned A43B and is buried there. A65C is the probable site for old Burton's Chapel. The earlist record of this congregation appears in the journal of the Rev. Francis Asbury, the first Methodist Bishop in America. Under the date of Sunday, 1 Nov 1784, he said "I lectured at Burton's in the evening."3 Thomas made a will on 29 July 1820 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Garrison Burton use of Negroes Sarah, Ann, Levin, Betty, George & Harriet until each arrive to age 35 & increase until age 21. To daughter Nanny Harmon Negroes Leah, Esther & Spencer until each arrives to age 35 & increase to age 21, provided no claim is made against my estate for Negro Samuel.
