That a certain John Garrison late of this county being in his life seized in fee of and in two tracts of land situate in the county aforesaid, containing 370 acres, and being so seized on the ____ day of ____ 1809 made and published his last will and testament & devised to your orator John W. Garrison 130 acres of land, and 240 acres of land being in two tracts to be divided between his four daughters, Peggy, Elizabeth, Charlotte & Maria Garrison; that the said 130 acres have been laid off and assigned to your orator John; That Maria, one of the aforesaid devisees, departed this life on the ____ day of ____ 1810 intestate and without issue, leaving her next of heirs the following brothers & sisters on the part of her father, viz: your orators John & Samuel Garrison and Caty, then wife of your orator William Garrison, of the half blood, and Peggy, Elizabeth & Charlotte, sisters of the whole blood, to all of whom the said 1/4 of the said Maria in the said 240 acres of land descended; that Caty, the wife of your orator William, departed this life in October 1817, leaving five children, to-wit: William, Sally, Margaret, Smith & Elizabeth Garrison, to whom her said 1/9 of said 240 acres descended equally, subject to the right of your orator William as tenant by curtesy; that your orator John bought of your orator Samuel his 1/9 of 1/4 of said lands, so that the said 240 acres of land remains now to be divided as follows: To Peggy, Elizabeth & Charlotte each by virtue of the will 1/4, and by descent from Maria 2/9 of 1/4; to John W. That a certain Peggy Garrison late of this county, departed this life under the age of 21 years and without issue in the year 1821; that the said Peggy Garrison at the time of her death was possessed in her own right in fee simple of the undivided 1/3 of two tracts of land situate on the waters of Matshapungo Creek in this county, containing by estimation together 220 acres; that the said lands belonged to the said Peggy Garrison and Elizabeth and Charlotte Garrison as tenants in common, the principal part of the land having been devised to them by their deceased father, John Garrison, and the residue having descended to them from their deceased sister, Maria Garrison; that the said Peggy Garrison at her death left as her next of kin and heirs at law two sisters of the whole blood, viz: the said Elizabeth & Charlotte Garrison, and two brothers of the half blood, John W. and Samuel Garrison, and also left two nephews and their nieces of the half blood, viz: your orators and oratrixes, William, Sally, Margaret Smith & Elizabeth Garrison who are the children of Caty Garrison, dec., who was a sister of the half blood to the said Peggy Garrison &c.4 He was named in the settlement of his father's estate on 26 September 1825 at Accomack Co, VA. Thomas was born on 6 July 1790 at Evergreen, Hack's Neck, Accomack Co, VA.3,2,1 Thomas was named in his uncle's will on 11 September 1799 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as my nephew Thomas Hatton Kellam in the will of Walter Hatton.2 He inherited land in 1800 at Wachapreague, Acc Co, VA. In 1791 Zorobabel Kellam (wife Mary) left his home place on tract A45 "to my son Thomas in case he ever returns home, but if he does not return then to my son John Kellam for life and then to my grandson Thomas H. Kellam." In 1812 Thomas H. Kellam sold the original 130 aces to Thomas Ashby. While it was not traced further, the major part of the land later became owned by John S. Mears, and the western part by Dr. George LeCato.4 He married Elizabeth Bell Jacob, daughter of Col. Robert C. Jacob and Elizabeth Hack, on 22 January 1819 at Northampton Co, VA. Peter Bowdoin was the security on the M.L.B. of Thomas H. Kellam and Elizabeth B. Dorsey. They were married on 23 Jan 1819.5 He married Harriet Burleigh Darby (148) Parramore, daughter of Thomas (63) Parramore and Mary Darby, 24 Feb 1837 (bond) at Northampton Co, VA. Wm. H. Parker was the security on the M.L.B. of Thomas H. Kellam and Mrs. Harriet B.D. Parramore. They were married by W.B. Snead on 28 Feb 1837..5 Thomas made a will on 24 September 1841 at Northampton Co, VA. It is my will and desire that all the Negroes and other personal property I got by my wife Hariet B. D. Kellam be subject to the payment of my debts firstly and then my other personal property if my debts be not satisfied. It is my will and desire that my wife Hariett B. D. Kellam be content with one third of my real and personal estate during her life. It is my will and desire that my son Thos H. Kellam have my farm in Accomack County known and called Evergreen and lying on Pungoteague Creek containing five hundred and seventy five acres provided he gives all his right and title to his mother's land in Savage's Neck to his sister Ann E. Kellam and Robert Jacob Kellam his brother. I give to my daughter Ann E. Kellam one half of my land in this county and lying in Savage's Neck on Cherrystone Creek containing three hundred and seventy five acres and including her mother's land and the other half of said land I give to my son Robert J. Kellam. I give to my son John Custis Kellam all the Negroes that may be saved after paying my debts which I came in possession of by marriage with his mother Hariett B. D. Kellam. I do hereby constitute and appoint my friends Peter S. Bowdoin and George T. Yerby executors. Signed, Thos H. Kellam Senr. Witnesses: George Bagwell, Henry Hawley, Jas M. William (64) Parramore and Margaret (578) Teackle, circa 1835.3 He was a Methodist minister who move to St. Louis, MO in 1841, and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1846 and held pastorates in Missouri and New Jersey and was rector of All Saints Parish, Calvert Co, MD at his death.2 Enoch was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Enoch Read the head of HH#650, a 41 year old farmer, born in New Jersey, with real estate valued at $4,000. Listed with him were the following Reads: Ann, age 40; Ann V., age 10; Wm. B., age 9; and Benj. E., age 7..4 Enoch died on 6 August 1876 at age 73.1 His body was interred at Parramore Cem, Locustville, Acc Co, VA. (Note: Turman's marriage book show 1804, but perhaps is was 1814 which fits better with her father's and brother's will named her and the births of her children.).5 Garrison was named in his father's will on 29 July 1820 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son Garrison Burton in the will of Thomas Burton.1 He sold land in 1834 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Garrison and Sally Burton gave a deed to the trustees of Buton's Chapel for the land on which stood Burton's Chapel; it was bounded on the east by the road, so it may have been a about the site indicated. The congregation later untied with the one at Oak Grove (tract A48A).6 Garrison was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. Elliott in the will of William Elliott Sr..5,6 John Wesley Andros Elliott, son of Thomas and grandson of William, was converted in 1833, licensed to preach in 1835, and ordained a deacon in 1845. Unlike his father, however, he never became a "traveling" minister, but served as a local preacher up and down the Shore for the rest of his life. In 1887 he estimated that he had in the course of 52 years preached 2,500 sermons, conducted 1,000 funerals, married 400 couples, baptized 75 persons, and offered public prayer 20,000 times. His historical writings and reminiscences, some of which were published locally uner his pseudonym, "Septuagenarian." The are a valuable source of early Methodist history on the Eastern Shore.7 He married Elizabeth G. 'Betsy' Burton, daughter of Garrison Burton and Sally A.T. Also listed were Betsy Fosque, age 24. Elliott and five years later, he and his wife Elizabeth G. resold to Henrietta Parramore, who was know as Miss Henny.10 John died on 13 July 1896 at age 82. He was shown as John W.A.
