Richard was born on 10 July 1842 at Cedar Wharf, Acc Co, VA. He was born at his father's plantation Ayresley located on the creek near Cedar Wharf..4 He was baptized on 2 June 1844 at St. George Ep Ch, Pungoteague, Acc Co, VA.5 Richard was listed with his parents in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Rich'd J. Ayres Jr., age 8 in HH#437 headed by Rich'd J. Ayres Sr., a 49 year old farmer with real estate valued at $2,200..1 In his youth his family moved to Shepheard's Plains which his father had bought in 1828. He later attended Margaret Academy at Bobtown, Acc Co, where he attained a military posture which he retained throughout his life. After graduation he attended William & Mary College, where he became proficient in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Leaving there in his senior year, he enlisted as soldier of the Confederacy, and served as 2nd Lieut. in the 39th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers of which Col. Louis C.H. Finney was Colonel, in Company H of which George S. West was Captain, James Bull 1st Lieut and Julius Ames 3rd Lieut, all of which commissions were held under Gov. Letcher and subject to his orders. His record is established with that of his life-long friend, Frederick Caesar Augustus Kellam and others on white marble memorials honoring the students at William & Mary College. After the War for a time he taught a provate school and was often called on as a speaker at public meetings.5 He married Elizabeth Hack Dawson, daughter of Capt. Samuel Dawson and Sarah Ann Bayne, on 31 March 1868 at Springdale, Leesburg, Loudoun Co, VA.6 Richard Johnson Ayres Jr. was owner of a general merchandise Store at Ayres' Wharf on Nandua Creek, adjoining "Shepheard's Plains." His farm becoming prosperous, when he was enabled to acquire more help, required all his time to oversee, which task he perferred to do himself. R.J. Ayres had been schooled in the law, there fore was often summoned as a juror of the Accomack County Court at Drummondtown. Education facilities at this time were at a low ebb. Private schools were opened, few and far between, and he and his wife, not being willing to send their girls to the nearest one, began teaching them. Continuing this for a few years, they found it would be advantageous to move to Baltimore where there were good schools. He obtained a lucrative position as a bookkeeper with the Powell Wholesale Produce Company and after Mr. Powell's death, he was engaged as secretary and bookkeeper by his wife's brother, Roger Temple Dawson.7 Richard reported a death on 15 February 1881 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. It was on this date (probably in 1882) that Rich. J. Ayres reported the death of his mother Leah W. Ayres, who died of old age at the age of 83 years..2 Richard died on 5 July 1930 at age 87.8 His body was interred at Loudoun Park Cem, Baltimore, MD.8
