(NOTE: Since she was not named in his will of 22 Apr 1812, which was not probated until 5 years later on 29 Sep 1817, it is possible that they were married after he wrote his will.).9 Hannah was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1820 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Hannah Topping, a head of household, age over 45 years. There was only 1 female, age 0-10 and 3 slaves. (NOTE: The female was probably her garnddaughter Ann Simpson Arlington, born in 1812, who would have been age 8 in 1820.).10 On 25 Sep 1820 in Acc Co, VA, Hannah S. Topping was named guardian of Ann S. Arlington, orphan of Thomas B. Arlington. Bond was set at $200. Hannah was to pay and deliver to Ann S. Arlington her father's estate as soon as she reached lawful age. Nathaniel Topping joined her on the bond.11 Hannah was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1830 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. War Pension Application of Hannah Topping, Accomack County, VA, 30 Aug 1851 - Hannah Topping (formerly Hannah Simpson) a resident of this county aforesaid, aged eighty eight years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath, makes the following declaration before me a justice of the county and state aforesaid, that she is in consequences of old age and bodily infirmity being nearly blind and unable to appear in court to make her declaration in order to attain the benefit of the Acts of Congress passed July 1838. That she intermarried with her deceased husband Southy Simpson, 4 Jun 1786 as will appear from the family records in her possession in the hand writing of her said husband Southy Simpson, taken from the record in the presence of the subscribing magistrate William P. Moore Senr. and herein unto appended. That the said Southy & Hannah lived together after marriage as husband and wife, untill the year 1794 when he died. She then intermarried with Garret Topping (who was also a Revolutionary Soldier) who also departed this life 13 Sep 1817 and still remains his widow. That she frequently heard her deceased husband Southy Simpson, speak of his Revolutionary services in the Virginia Militia during the war of the revolution under the command of his father Col. Southy Simpson, who was the Commandant of the County of Accomack a large part of the time of the said war, that he was reputed and belived by the community to have been a Revolutionary Soldier and she fully covants in that belief. On one occasion she remembers(?) of him together with others being sent to Watts Island to burn Robert Parker's house as he was considered a tory, and she has always considered and understood he served more then two years in the militia of said county keeping guard at different places to repel the invasion of the British who was constantly trying to land to get supplies for their vessels. That her said husband Southy Simpson, was the son of Col. Southy Simpson of Accomack County who commanded the Militia during the Revolutionary War. She does not recolect the age of her husband Southy Simpson, but he was considerable older than herself and if living would be over ninety years of age. That he was well acquainted with Capt. John Moore, Custis Bull, Cols' Cropper & Joynes and nearly all the officers and soldiers from the County during the war. She believes from her personal knowledge her said husband served in attention at different times throughout the war for which she deserves a pension, and hereby relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that her name is not on any Pension Roll nor that of her said husband as fara as she knows or believes. Witnessed: William P. Moore Sr. Signed: Hannah (X) Topping. Accomack Co, VA - Personally appears before me Hannah Topping formerly Simpson, and made Oath in due form of law, that the facts set forth in the foregoing declaration are just and true, in consequences of old age and infirmities she is not able to appear in court to do so, and I do further certify that I have been personally acquainted with Southy Simpson and Hannah Simpson who was commandant of the 2nd Reg. VA Militia to the end of the Revolutionary War. And from my knowledge I do not doubt but Southy Simpson and Hannah his wife, was taken out of the book of family record in my presence. I firmly believe from my knowledge of the same the marriage entry in the hand writing of Southy Simpson. Given under my hand this 30 Aug 1851. Signed: William P. Moore Senr. J.P. Accomack Co, VA - I, Jno. H. Gillet, Clerk of the County Court certify that William P. Moore Senr. who has acknowledged the above was at the time of subscribing the same a Justice of Peace in and for the said county, duly comissioned and qualified according to the Constitution and Laws fo the said State and that his signature there. The attached family record page shows: Southy Simpson and Hannah his wife was married 4 Jun 1786. Nancy Simpson was born 6 Jun 1787. Elizabeth Simpson was born 8 Nov 1788. Southy Simpson was born 20 Nov 1790. Southy Simpson, son of Southy Simpson and Hannah, his wife departed this life 24 Jul 1792. Nancy Simpson, daughter of Southy Simpson & Hannah his wife, departed this life 6 Aug 1792.5 Based on a tombstone inscription in the Arlington family plot at Mt. Nebo in Slutkill Neck, Acc Co, VA, she evidently paid for the erection of a tombstone with the following inscription: "Ann S. Mason, 24 Feb 1812 - 21 Jul 1852, erected by her grandmother Hannah Topping." (NOTE: Hannah Scarburgh Rogers married first Southy Simpson and had a daughter Elizabeth Simpson who married Thos. Arlington, who were the parents of this Ann Simpson Arlington Rayfield Mason. After Southy Simpson's death, Hannah married Garret Topping and remained his widow from 1817 to her death in 1855.).14 She made a will on 25 August 1852 at Accomack Co, VA. To grandson James T. Rayfield my young Negro man Esau & woman Ann ... To my granddaughter Mary E. Rayfield my Negro woman Leah ... & $100. To my grandson Major Rayfield $150. To my granddaughter Susan A. Rayfield $150. Residue of my personal estate to my grandson James T. Rayfield with him paying each of my grandchildren Susan E. Major & Mary E. Rayfield $6 each. William P. Moore Sr. Extr. Witt: William P.
