Edmund Custis was the security on the M.L.B. of Robinson Custis and Frances Yeardy West..2 Frances was named in her father's will before 30 August 1805 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as daughter Yearly Custis in the will of John West Sr., son-in-law George Poulson.3 She made a will on 23 July 1832 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Edmund R. Custis Negroes Abel, Spencer, John, Sarah, Jake, Pleasant & her child Pleasant together with their future increase & all other Negroes which I now have together with my interest in Negro man Stephney (which I heired from my daughter Fanny). Son Edmund R. Custis Extr. Witt: Tully R. Wise Jr. & Southey S. Satchell..4 Frances died before 27 August 1832 at Accomack Co, VA.4

     John was born in 1654 at Northampton Co, VA.3 John Custis III was the only surviving child of John II & Elizabeth & of John II's three marriages. John was named in his grandmother's will on 3 December 1667 at Shadwell, Stepney Parish, England. He was shown as my grandson John Custis in the will of Elizabeth (ER) Robinson, widow, of Shadwell, England, which was probated in N'hamp Co, VA on 29 Jun 1668..4 He married Margaret (25) Michael, daughter of Capt. John Michael (Sr.-N'hamp) and Elizabeth (5) Thorowgood, circa 1678.5,3 He was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1684, but disqualified on being chosen sheriff, was again a burgess 1685-86, 1693-99, and a member of the Council, 1699-1713. He was also captain of Accomack County and deputy commander of the Eastern Shore under his father until 1692 when he was temporarily suspended from all civil and military offices for contempt. He was commander in chief of the Eastern Shore in 1699. In 1704 he held 5,950 acres Accomack County and 3,400 acres in Northampton County.1 He married Sarah (15) Littleton, daughter of Col. Southey (9) Littleton and Sarah Bowman, circa 1693.3 John died on 26 January 1713/14 at Northampton Co, VA. His will of 3 Dec 1708, codicil of 20 Mar 1711/2 and probated 16 Mar 1713/4 named his wife Sarah, sons John, to whom he left Arlington House, Hancock and Henry, daughters Elizabeth Custis and Sorrowful Margaret Kendall, wife of William Kendall, and Yeardley Michael (son of John Michael's 3rd wife), and the codicil mentioned grandson Custis Kendall..3 His body was interred at Wilsonia Neck, N'hamp Co, VA. His tombstone, erected by his widow, records that he was colonel and commander in chief of the militia of the Eastern Shore, that he died 26 Jan 1713/4 in his 60th year, that he first married Margaret, daughter of Mr. John Michaell, by whom he had 7 sons (3 of whom were buried near him) and 2 daughters, and that his 2nd wife was Sarah, daughter of Col. Southey Littleton and widow of Mr. Adam Michael. A later inscription adds that Sarah died 18 Apr 1720 in her 51st year..6

Consent signed from "Golden Quarter.".3 Thomas was named in his father's will on 1 June 1808 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son Thomas Custis in the will of John Custis Sr., Deep Creek. He was also named as an Extr..1 Thomas died in January 1821.4 Administration of Thomas's estate was filed on 29 January 1821 at Accomack Co, VA. Custis departed this life on ___ day of ___ 1821, intestate, leaving 6 infant children, to-wit: John Custis, Theodore W. Custis, Margaret K. Custis, Edwin Custis and Adeline Custis and Julius Custis; the wife of Thomas V. Custis departed this life sometime previous; and Julius also departed this life on ___ day ___ 1821; that since the death of Thomas & Margaret his wife, John Custis has frequently applied to the said children for payment as aforesaid..5

     George was born in 1778 at Accomack Co, VA.3 He married Susanna Sullivan, daughter of Daniel Sullivan and Elizabeth McCarthy, circa 1803.4,2,3 George was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1820 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as George Custis, age 26-45. Listed with him were 2 males age 10-16 and 1 female age 10-16..5 George was named in a land cause on 27 March 1822 at Accomack Co, VA. That a certain George Custis & Susanna his wife, late of this county, being indebted to William Gillett & Co. in the sum of £59:19:3, in order to secure the payment of the same, and also other sums of money which they might thereafter become indebted, together with interest, costs &c., upon 12 Jul 1806, executed a deed of mortgage by which they conveyed to the said William Gillett & Co., a certain tract of land situate in Acc Co, containing 50 acres, to be held as security &c; that the said William Gillett & Co., on 15 Nov 1804 assigned the same to Thomas Parker; that upon the ___ day of ___ the said Susanna Custis in whom the fee simple title of said land was, departed this life leaving the following children, William, John & Sally R. Custis, to whom the said land descended subject to the aforesaid claim of Thomas Parker and also subject to the life estate of the George Custis &c..4 He died in 1834. George Custis was, in the custom of the times, a farmer. He had a severe vision problem and after botched eye surgery by a doctor in Philadelphia became totally blind and relied on his daughter, "Sally" Adbell for help. When she no longer was able to help him he moved in with the family of his younger sister, Margaret Custis. It was while living with her that he died at the age of 65 in 1834.3

     William was born in 1805 at St. Georges Parish, Acc Co, VA.2 William was named in a land cause on 27 March 1822 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as William Custis the son of George & Susanna Custis, late of this county..1 He left the Shore about 1825, presumably for Washington, DC and on 27 April 1829 he married Elizabeth Bury Wheeler in Prince George's County, MD. They moved back to the Shore for a short time for the birth of their first child, George Washington Neale Custis in 1830, and then back to DC where their second child, Mary Columbia Custis was born in July 1832. Two more children were born in DC, Lemuel Wheeler Custis in 1834 and Susannah Elizabeth Custis on 13 February 1837. William's beloved wife, Elizabeth, died at the age of 28 in 1839. Left with four young children to raise William married Rosanna M. Martin on 7 September 1840 in Frederick County, MD and they had four sons: Emerson C. Custis was born in July 1842, John William Custis born 1843, Charles Custis born 24 February 1846, and Alfred Frank Custis born 26 July 1868. William was a blacksmith who worked at The Washington Naval Yard and lived in DC for the rest of his life. He died there at the age of 63 on 26 July 1868 and is buried next to his two wives in Washington's Glenwood Cemetery. All of William's children grew up and were educated in Washington and as they matured they developed careers of their own and moved away from their childhood home. In succeeding generations their were several doctors, several lawyers, a university professor, a veterinarian, the editor of a major newspaper, a top-ranked woman artist, two graduates of Harvard, two graduates of Johns Hopkins and two grandchildren mentioned in Who was Who in America.2 He married Elizabeth Bury Wheeler on 27 April 1829 at Prince George's Co, MD.2 William Henry Custis married Rosanna M. Martin on 7 September 1840 at Frederick Co, MD.2 William died on 26 July 1868 at Washington, DC.2 William was buried at Glenwood Cemetery, Washington, DC.2

William C. Watson

     William was born circa 1800 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He married Nancy Major, daughter of Sophia Turner, on 4 September 1821 at Northampton Co, VA. Wm. Savage was the security on the M.L.B. of William Watson and Nancy Major. They were maried on 6 Sep 1821.2 William C. Watson was the security on a M.L.B. On 20 December 1821 at Northampton Co, VA. Wm. C. Watson was the security on the M.L.B. of William Henderson and Susanna Stott. (NOTE: Was he related to either of them?).2 On 1 Nov 1826 in Accomack County, Wm. C. Watson bought 1 small red box & contents, 1 waiter & 3 wine glasses, 2 gilded pitchers, 4 blue plates & 2 small dishes, 1 pair towels cotton diaper no 4, 1 suit blue curtains and 1 homney morton at this estate sale of Mrs. Tabitha Watson. (Acc Co Inventories &c, 1828-1830, p 273, recorded 27 Oct 1828) The only other Watson buyers included Thomas Watson who gave Jno. W. Watson as his security. Selected other buyers were Walter Finney, Seth Bell, James H. Dix, Jno. R. Wise & Thos. V. Colona. At settlement it was noted: That a load of goods was bought from J.W. Watson's to the ware house & a horse & cart & Negro man; John M. Watson was paid for appraising & writing; Expenses in attending and taking the deposition of Frances West in Philadelphia. (NOTES: Administration on Tabitha Watson's estate was granted to James H. Dix on 30 Oct 1826 with Levi Dix, John Y. Bagwell & Richard L. Rew securities. She was Tabitha Wharton, widow of Ephraim Watson, and John W. Watson was her son. John W. Watson married Betsy Selby Simpson in 1806 and had a son Thomas Watson born circa 1808. They were the Jno. W. & Thomas Watson shown above. The Thos V. Colona shown in the inventory above was Thomas Virgil Colonna, son of William Colonna and his wife Elizabeth Watson (a daughter of Ephraim & Tabitha Wharton Watson), as shown in Hacks Neck and Its People, p. 113 - Colonna family.). On 26 Jan 1829 William C. Watson made oath that he was well acquainted with the handwriting of John C. Savage.3 William was listed as a head of household in the census of 1830 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William C. Watson a head of household, aged 20-30 (b.c. 1800-1810). Listed with him was 1 male age 0-5; 1 male age 5-10, another male age (20-30); 2 females age 0-5; 1 female age 5-10; 1 female age 10-15, 1 female age 20-30; and 1 female age 30-40. There were also 5 slaves. (NOTE: The other male his age could be a brother and one of the older females could be his wife and the other his brother's wife. However, these folks could also be his wife's brother or sisters and there could be other possibilities.).4 On 21 Aug 1830 William C. Watson of Acc Co is indebted to Stockley Kellam for $150 by a note dated 16 Jan 1830. Since Kellam wants to make the payment more secure, Watson gives all his rights & interest in the schooner Onancock, together with the hull, mast, sails, anchors, boat cables and appurtenances unto her to Kellam. Provided that if Watson pays Kellam the $150 with interest and all costs and other debts that are now or shall become due, with all costs that shall arise with this deed, then this deed to be null and void. (NOTE: The schooner Onancock was not shown in any Acc Co Will books from 1800 to 1860.).5 William witnessed a will on 7 July 1831 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that John Addison, Levin J. Thomas, Wm. C. Watson and William Wyatt Jr. witnessed the will of Robert Hadlock. (NOTE: Hadlock named a daughter Harriett who he had by Fanny Turner.).6 He bought land on 24 September 1832 at Craddockville, Acc Co, VA. William R. Custis of Acc Co sells William C. Watson of Acc Co for $220 a parcel of land in or near the Turkey Pen in Acc Co containing 13 acres more or less & bounded on the south & west by Stewart Kellam heirs, & west by the county road, east by William Kellam &c. Wm C. Watson is not to have possession until 1 January next. (NOTE: Turkey Pen is present day Craddockville, see Whitelaw, p. 651. See Bk 33, p 160 showing it was sold at auction.).7 He was named in deed of mortgage on 1 November 1832 at Craddockville, Acc Co, VA. Smith Hyslop is security for William C. Watson on a note dated 24 Sep 1832 for $220 and due to Wm. R. Custis and William C. Watson wanting to secure the said Smith Hyslop from any loss by being his security on the aforesaid note, this deed for and inconsideration of the promise & also for and in consideration of $1 paid by Thomas A. Coleburn trustee, William C. Watson sells to Thomas A. Coleburn trustee, a tract of land in the village of Turkey Pen bounded on the north & west by Stewart Kellam heirs, on the south & east by William Kellam of Robt containing 13 acres more or less. William C. Watson is permitted to remain on the land.8 He married Fannie Mason, daughter of John Mason and Margaret 'Peggy' Onley, on 4 March 1833 at Accomack Co, VA. William Mason was the security on the M.L.B. of William C. Watson, widower, and Fanny Mason. Another record from this source shows they were married on 6 Mar 1833..9 William C. Watson bought land on 5 December 1835 at Accomack Co, VA. William Henderson Senr & Sally C. his wife of Acc Co sells to William C. Watson of Acc Co for $185 a tract of land in Acc Co bounded on the north by Peter Hack, east by Abel W. Kellam & Peggy Darby, south by the Rich'd Turner's heirs and west by Peter Hack containing 39 & ¾ acres more or less. (NOTE: See Bk 29, p 205 & 206 where he sells this land to Joshua Major (Free Negro) and to Parker West (Free Negro).).10 He sold land on 2 January 1837 at Accomack Co, VA. William C. Watson & wife Fanny of Acc Co sell to Joshua Major (F.N.) for $150 a parcel of land in St. George's Parish, Acc Co, containing 25 acres more or less bounded on the south-east by Parker West which he purchased of William C. Watson & Fanny his wife, on the north-east by Peter Hack, on the north-west by Cabe J. Hack and on the south-west by the guined(?) land. Witt: none. Signed: Wm. C. Watson & Fanny (her X mark) Watson. William A. Parker & Wm. P. Moore Jr, Justices of the Peace certified the signatures of the Watsons and certified that Fanny was examined separately and agreed to sell the land.11 He sold land on 2 January 1837 at Accomack Co, VA. William C. Watson & wife Fanny of Acc Co sell to Parker West (F.N.) for $150 a parcel of land in St. George's Parish, Acc Co, containing 25 acres more or less bounded on the south by Abel W. Kellam, on the north-east by Peter Hack, son the south-west by Joshua Major which was sold to him by Wm C Watson & wife Fanny. Witt: none. Signed: Wm. C. Watson & Fanny (her X mark) Watson. William A. Parker & Wm. P. Moore Jr, Justices of the Peace certified the signatures of the Watsons and certified that Fanny was examined separately and agreed to sell the land.12 On 24 Feb 1837 in Acc Co, William C. Watson of Acc Co and Edmond J. Poulson & Levin L. Joynes Jr., trustees, and James Poulson committee of Jno. B. Guy & James B. Poulson, creditors, whereas Wm. C. Watson is indebted to James Poulson committee & James B. Poulson for $850 by note with legal interest thereon, Wm. C. Watson is willing to secure this indenture for the consideration of the premises and for further consideration of $1 to Wm. C. Watson paid by Edmd J. Poulson & L.L. Joynes Jr. trustees, that Watson sells unto Edmund J. Poulson & L.L. Joynes one Negro woman Ann, 1 mare, 1 ditto, 1 wane, 1 yoke oxen. However if Watson pays the debt then his deed is void and the items will be sold at public auction. Witt: J.N. Bagwell for (W.C.W), Ellison A. White, Tenney Drummond & William C. Watson witnessed the will of William Middleton, wife Elizabeth.14 William was listed as a head of household in the census of 1840 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William C. Watson a head of household, age 30-40 (b.c. 1800-1810). Listed with him was 1 male age 0-5; 1 male age 10-15; 1 male age 15-20; 1 female age 0-5; 1 female age 5-10; 1 female age 10-15; 1 female age 30-40 (his age); and 1 female age 70-80 (b.c. 1760-1770). Also listed was 6 slaves. (NOTE: The elder female could be either his mother or his wife's mother.).15 On 23 Mar 1840 Custis Bayly (F.N.) of Acc Co is in debt to Wm. C. Watson of Acc Co for $60 by bond of 17 Feb 1840, which he intends to secure and has chosen Benjamin Stringer of Acc Co as his trustee. Bayly puts up 1 horse called Logan, 1 horse called Paxton, 1 work steer, 3 cows, 8 head hogs, 2 beds, 2 bedsteds, 20 lb corn, 300 bushels oats. Watson, executor of a deed in trust to the said George S. Rogers Grantee for the said William Mason for the purpose (reference to deed recorded in Acc Co Clerk's Office on 14 June 1841) for a tract of land containing 13 acres more or less and on 18 Mar 1843 was exposed to public auction and William Mister became the purchaser for $280. Ayres (known as Trader's tract), thence about 100 yards north east along said line to a corner locust post on the line between the said Moore and Ayres, thence about 50 yards north west alone said Moore's line to the commencement on the main county road containing ¼ acre on which is situated a house of worship together with all and singular the houses, woods, waterways, privileges and appurtenances thereto belonging. It was on this date that administration on the estate of William Watson was granted to William P. Moore Jr. with Goerge S. Rodgers securities.20 It has been reported that he died in Feb 1860 according to a newspaper article which can no longer be located. Accomack County Order Books Feb 1857 - 1 Feb 1860 and 27 Feb 1860 - 1862 and 1862 - 1865 were searched and no Wm. C. Watson was found in either index and all Watsons with no first name in the indexes were searched as well and no Wm. C. Watson was found. The Accomack County Fiduciaries from 1 Jan 1858 to 1860 and from July 1860 to 1864 were searched and no Wm. C. Watson was found. Accomack County Inventories from Dec 1855 to June 1865 were searched and no Wm. C. Watson was found. Maybe he died in either Northampton County or in the Norfolk area.
