It was in this year that James Melson bought portions of Whitelaw's tract A103 near Pastoria, located between the 2 branches of present Parker's Creek. One portion was bought from Hancock Simpson, then sold to Colmore C. Hinman and then to Levi Dix, which became merged with the tract A103A, which is called the Dr. Dix Farm. The other portion was 6 acres in the southeast corner on the highway which James Melson bought from Preason, Caleb & Mary Dix and their mother Leah.4 He married Elizabeth 'Betsy' Savage on 7 January 1825 at Worcester Co, MD. They were shown as James Melson and Elizabeth Polson.5 James was named as an heir on 27 September 1830 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James Melson was named as a son of Levin Melson, dec'd, a carpenter in the Virginia Navy in the Rev. War.6 James was named as an heir on 28 June 1831 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Nanny Melson, widow of Levin Melson, who was formerly a carpenter in the Virginia Navy in the Rev. War is now dead. James Milliner Melson who is commonly called James Melson, the son of said Levin Melson is now living, Amey the dau of said Levin Melson died intestate leaving Nancy White her only child; Bridget, dau. of said Levin Melson died intestate Leaving Levin Lewis her only child; Rachel Melson, dau. of said Levin Melson has since died intestate and without issue; Noah Wyatt Melson commonly called Noah Melson has since died intestate leaving four children; William Henry Melson called Henry Melson, Cassey sometimes called Kessey, Thomas sometimes called James Thomas, and Samuel Melson, all of whom are minors expect the said Henry Melson.7 1 Mar 1834 - I, James Melson, for & inconsideration of the natural love & affection which I bear for my granddaughter Molly Ann Bell, daughter of my daughter Sally Bell, do hereby give and grant to my said granddaughter all the articles of personal estate of every king and description here to for loaned by me to John Bell on his marriage with my said daughter, as will particularly appear by reference to said John Bell receipt to one of record in Acc Co Court Clerks Office and if my said granddaughter shall die under age and unmarried then all aforesaid personal estate to go to the other children of my said daughter who may then be living and in default of such other children, then to my said daughter Sally Bell. Signed James Melson. Witnessed by Jas. B. Ailsworth & _____. Recorded 3 Mar 1834.8 He sold land in 1839 at Pastoria, Acc Co, VA. It was in this year that James Melson sold his 6 acres of tract A103 to Colomore C. Hinman and 5 years later he and his wife Lovey H. sold to Dr. William T. Core. The house is shown in Whitelaw as tract A103B, called the Core Place. The house with 2 brick ends probably was built by James Melson following his purchase in 1800. The end wall of the parlor is paneled, and on each side of the fireplace are cupboards, with 20-pane glass doors with arched mouldings over the top row. The mantel is plain except for a delicate reeding, which also appears around the window frames and the room has a horizontal board wainscoting. The wainscoting in the dining room is vertically paneled, and the mantel is plain. To the right of it the wall is paneled, with a cupboard simiiar to those in the parlor; at one time the wall on the other side had the same treatment, but that woodwork has since been removed.4 He died before 28 February 1842 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of James Melson was granted to Elizabeth S. Melson with Levi Dix, James Eichelberger & Colmore C. Hinman securities. NOTE: The original record seems to be dated 31 Jan 1842 and reads "On the motion of Elizabeth S. Melson, $5,000 bond, with Levi Dix, James Eichelberger & Colmore C. Hinman security, administartion granted on the estate of James Melson dec'd."9 On 11 Oct 1842 - Elizabeth S. Melson &c - Plantiffs against James Melson's Heirs &c - Defendants. This day came the parties by their attorneys, and it is ordered that John D. Melson be appointed Guardian ad litem to the infant defendants Noah & Ann Melson, and that he be served with a copy of this order.10 On 14 Oct 1842 - Elizabeth S. Melson &c - Plantiffs against James Melson's Heirs &c - This cause came on this day to be heard upon the Bill & exhibits heretofore filed - and the infant defendants Noah, Levin, Mary & Ann Melson by Revel West their Guardian ad litem appointed by consent in Lieu of John D. Melson. (Rest in Reference to land he died seized.) (NOTE: Does not mention Thresa Melson.).11 On 5 Jun 1843 - Elizabeth S. Melson against James Melson Jr. Heirs. Infants Noah, Levin, Mary, & Ann Melson. Also mentions John D. Melson. (NOTE: Does not mention Thresa Melson.).12 On 27 Jun 1843 - James Melson Sr.(?) & Elizabeth S. Melson - On the Application of Elizabeth S. Melson Adm. of James Melson Sr.(?) dec'd ordered that George W. Bundick, John E. Wise & Thomas J. Rayfield or any 2 of them be commissioner to state, settle & make report there of to the next court.13 On 16 Oct 1843 - Levi Dix &c - Plaintiff - In Chancery - against - Elizabeth S. Melson Admr of James Melson Jr dec'd James H. Melson, John D. Melson, Parker Grinnalds & Elizabeth his wife, Sally Bell, Noah Melson, Mary Melson, Lewis Melson, Ann Melson & Theresa Melson - defendants. Also a Thomas Melson mentioned in the case. It was in this year that Henry Greenalds (wife Catherine) died intestate and was succeeded by a son Elijah, who in 1818 (wife Sarah) left to his son Southy the part between the creek and the neck road, and to his son William that above the road; after the death of William a few years later, his part was bought by Southy. In 1844 he and his wife Maria Grinnalds sold a 200-acre plantation to Shalmaneser Davis.2 He married Sarah (-----) circa 1768.1 Elijah Grinnalds was security on the administration of an estate on 26 April 1786 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the unadministered estate of James Drummond was granted to William Drummond with Elijah Grinalds security.3 He was security on the administration of an estate on 30 June 1790 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of George Oldham was granted to John Custis & John Poulson with Elijah Grinalds & Southy Satchell securities.4 Elijah was named in his brother's will on 29 January 1795 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son John Grinnalds in the will of Elijah Grinnalds..1 He lived before 1810 at Alexandria Co, VA. According to Mark C. Lewis, this John Grinnalds moved to Alexandria, VA before 1810 and married a Mary (-----).2 He sold land on 10 October 1810 at Alexandria, VA. It was on this date that John Grinnalds & his wife Mary of Alexandria County, VA sold 132 acres of land to Richard Hickman for 780 pounds current money. Since there is no Alexandria County in VA, this must have been the City of Alexandria, VA.5

He was shown as Thomas Grinalds in the will of Southy Grinalds, wife Sarah.3 Thomas died before 10 February 1801 at Accomack Co, VA.4 According to Mark C. Lewis, this Thomas Grinnalds was lost at sea post 1798.5

Southy was born circa 1784 at Accomack Co, VA.2 Southy was named in his uncle's will on 20 April 1798 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as my nephew Southy Grinalds in the will of Southy Grinalds, wife Sarah.3 He married Maria Rogers circa 1800.4,5 Southy was named in his father's will on 10 February 1801 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son Southy Grinnalds in the will of Elijah Grinnalds..6 Southy was listed as a head of household in the census of 1810 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Southey Grinnalds a head of household, age 26-45 (b.c. 1775-1794). Listed with him were 1 male, age 0-10; 1 female age 0-10; & 1 female age 16-26 & 2 slaves.7 He inherited land in 1818 at tract A108, north side Hunting Creek, Acc Co, VA. In 1758 Henry Greenalds (wife Catherine) died intestate and was succeeded by a son Elijah, who in 1818 (wife Sarah) left to his son Southy the part between the creek and the neck road, and to his son William that above the road; after the death of William a few years later, his part was bought by Southy. In 1844 he and his wife Maria Grinnalds sold a 200-acre plantation to Shalmaneser Davis. Southy was listed as a head of household in the census of 1820 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Southy Grinnalds a head of household, age 26-45 (b.c. 1775-1794). Listed with him were 1 male, age 0-10; 1 male age 10-16; 3 females, age 0-10; 1 female age 10-16; & 1 female age 26-45 & 3 slaves.7 Southy was named in his brother's will on 3 October 1822 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as brother Southey Grinnalds in the will of William Grinnalds and he became the Admr at probate.8 Southy was named as an appraiser of an estate on 29 January 1827 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that William Riley, Absalom Lewis & Southey Grinnalds were ordered to appraise the estate of Scarburgh Lewis.9 He was security on the probate of a will on 16 June 1829 at Accomack Co, VA. Southy Grinnalds & George P. Ewell were named securities at probate of the will of John Parks Sr.10 He was security on the administration of an estate on 29 June 1829 at Accomack Co, VA. John C. Kellam, William Riley, Southey Grinnalds & Samuel Coleburn were securities on the administation of the estate of Sally Stran.11 Southy proved a will on 29 June 1829 at Accomack Co, VA. There being no witnesses William Riley, William R. Custis & Southey Grinnalds made oath that they were well acquainted with the handwriting of William Stran. Jane Stran & Mary P. Stran became Admrs. with John C. Kellam, William Riley, Southey Grinnalds & Samuel Coleburn securities.12 Southy was listed as a head of household in the census of 1830 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Capt. Southy Grinalds a head of household, age 30-40 (b.c. 1790-1800). Listed with him were 1 male, age 5-10; 1 male age 10-15; 2 females, age 0-5; 1 female age 15-20; & 1 female age 30-40 & 9 slaves.1 Southy was listed as a head of household in the census of 1840 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Southy Grinalds a head of household, age 50-60 (b.c. 1780-1790). Listed with him were 1 male, age 15-20; 1 male age 20-30; 1 female, age 20-30; 1 free negro & 8 slaves.13 Southy witnessed a will on 28 October 1843 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Polly Ayres, Margaret Ayres & Southy Grinnalds witnessed the will of Lavinia Lewis.14 Southy sold land in 1844 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Southy, the son of Elijah Greenalds, and his wife Maria Grinnalds sold a 200-acres plantation to Shalmaneser Davis..4 He died before 30 September 1844 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert A. Young was named to settle the estate of Maria Grinnalds. Edward J. Young and Isaiah W. Bagwell were the securities. (NOTE: He was evidently dec'd by this date, as he would have been named to settle his wife's estate. However, Turman shows he died in 1856, but does not show a reference for this, but does show that a record of Southy after 1844 is being sought.).15,2
