He was shown as Oliver J. Lucas, a 72 year old city post master. Listed with him were Emma W. Lucas, a 55 year old wife; Emma W. Lucas, a 30 year old daughter and clerk in city post office; and Margaret Matthews, a 90 year old widowed mother-in-law.7 He died on 30 September 1915 at age 78. Mr. Oliver J. Lucas died at his home on Market Street in this city on Thursday morning last at an early hour of paralysis. On Thursday of last week he was taken sick and went to his room. He was compelled to keep his bed the remainder of the week but on Sunday his condition was thought to be improved although he was still quite a sick man. At an early hour on Monday morning he suffered a stroke of paralysis which involved his entire right side. This left him in a state of unconsciousness and he remained so, growing weaker and weaker, until death came at the hour name above. Mr. Lucas was born in Accomac county, Virginia, in 1837 and had rounded out his 78th year. For a number of years he was engaged in the mercantile business at Modestown, Va., and by his upright dealings gained for himself a large circle of warm friends and made money. About twenty years ago he moved to this city and engaged in the mercantile business. Later he accepted the position of assistant postmaster at this place and served in that position for many years, retiring a few years ago because of his advanced years. In this position he gave universal satisfaction and the patrons of the office heard of his resiguation with much regret. For the last few years he has lived a retired life, but all the while was a very active man for one of his years. Mr. Lucas had the distinction of being connected with the U. S. Postal Service for 40 years, a service that is rarely enjoyed by any of our citizens. In the death of Mr. Lucas our town loses one of its most respected citizens. No man ever moved into this section that had more friends and on all sides regrets are expressed at his death. He was a Christian gentleman and one who lived it every day. He was a devoted husband and father and his home life was worthy of emulation. He loved his home, he loved those about his home, yea, verily, he loved everybody and delighted in seeing and making them happy. He was never heard to say an ill word of any one and his disposition was to defend those who were harshly criticized. To know O. J. Lucas was to love him, and those of us who knew him best loved him most. He was a member of the Baptist Church of this city and was always active in the affairs of his church and at the time of his death was a deacon. He leaves, besides his widow, three children to mourn their loss. They are Mrs. William Wigton, Mrs. William S. Bowen and Miss Willie Lucas, all of this city. He also leaves a brother, Mr. Samuel Lucas, of Ottawa, Kansas and a sister, Mrs. Julius Matthews of Temperanceville, Va. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church on Friday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. D. Peebles, assisted by the other minsters of the town and interment was made in the Methodist Protestant Cemetery. A number of persons, many of them being from out-of-town sections, attested their esteem for the deceased by attending the funeral. The horary pall bearers were Messrs. H. B. Pilchard, J. Frank Vincent, I.J. Davis, L. Paul Ewell, John W. Ennis, Quince Ashburn. A good man has left us. Peace to his ashes.3,4,8 Oliver was buried at Bethany United Methodist Chruch Cemetery, Pocomoke City, Wor Co, MD.4
