George was born circa 1813 at Accomack Co, VA.1 George was named in his father's will on 23 March 1844 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son George J. Dix in the will of Levi Dix, wife Lovey Wright. It was noted that if my son George returns home then Rious & Leah are not to be free at all, but to be his slaves forever..2 He appeared on the census of between 1850 and 1880 at Plaquemines Parish, LA; When the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 U. S. Federal Census records were taken, George was using his port location of Plaquemines, LA as his residence and he was listed on the census records as "James W. Lyons."3 George was listed with another family in the census of 1880 at Accomack Co, VA. George was also listed in the 1880 census as 'George J. Dix', 65 years old and living in Accomack, VA in the household of Peter Bayley. The Bayleys were a black family living on and working George's farm while he was 'at sea.' They were probably not aware of his alias and did not know he was also counted as a resident of Louisiana in the 1880 census.3 George made a will on 14 May 1884 at Plaquemines Parish, LA. He left a will as "James W. Lyons," the alias he used during his years as a sea captain (pilot) on various barges. As James W. Lyons, George and Asa A. Douglas loaned money to other barge pilots. The wills reads as follows: This is to certify that I have appointed Asa A.
Douglas as my legal Agent and do empower and authorize him to transact my business during my absence to collect all debts which may be due and to pay all claims which may be brought against me, and in case of my death I give and bequeath to the said Asa A. Douglas all of my notes which I hold against Pilots and give him full power to sue and be sued in case of any one having claims against me which there is none at this date, but all property here standing in my name, I leave it and bequeath it to the said Asa A. Douglas to have and to hold it during his natural life. His will was recorded at Plaquemines Parish on 8 May 1886.4 George died on 18 November 1885 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA, He died of prostration at the age of 72, the child of Levi and Cath Dix. His was born in Accomack County and was an unmarried sea captain. His nephew George J. Northam gave the information. The following Death Notice for George J. Dix, Sea Captain, was in the 21 Nov 1885 "Peninsula Enterprise" based on Accomac Court House records 1881-1912: "Capt. George Dix, a skillful navigator, died at his home near Accomac C. H. last Wednesday, in the 71st year of his age. Until the last year or so, his life from early boyhood had been spent "on the seas," excepting an annual visit of a few weeks with relatives at his old home. He was well known in Accomac and held in high esteem by a large circle of friends."1,3 He estate was settled. The estate of George J. Dix was recorded in Accomack County, VA, upon the request of his administrator, Upshur B. Quimby. The records for 1886 & 1887 primarily covered payment of his legal debts; e. g., burial and estate expenses, taxes, court fees, etc., and income to the estate from repayment of a loan, estate items auctioned, etc. Records for 1888-1893 covered distribution of the remainder of the estate to his nieces and nephews, the children of his brother (or half-brother) Asa T. Dix, deceased.5
