Samuel Feddeman

M, b. circa 1640, d. November 1701
Samuel "Fettiman" is mentioned in the following land certificate and headrights [abstracted from the Acc Co Court Records, D.& W., 1678-1682, p170 and published in Stratton Nottingham's book "Certificates and Rights, Accomack County, Virginia, 1663-1709," p54]: "Certificate is this Day (18 Mar 1679/80) Granted to Mr. William Anderson for eight hundred & fifty Acres of Land due for Rights underwritten, he having made oath to ye same in open Court: Thomas Cuffe, Edm Allett, Richard Sanders, Wm Jones, Ann Salmon, Lancelott Jackes, Ann Harkey, Jane Lacey, Edw Right, Isack Englesdon, Obediah Bromkin, Samuel Fettiman, Joseph Ash, Wm Ketchem, Henry Mrwanes." This certificate was granted for the transportation of men and women into the Colony. Upon proof of claim the local Courts granted certificates for land, 50 acres for each person transported, and later a land patent was issued by the Governor for the number of acres certified to. It is interesting to note that William Anderson, the person responsible for Samuel Fittiman's transportation into the Colony, was the father of Naomi Anderson, who married Francis Makemie. [Wise, Ye Kingdome of Accawmacke, 1911, p281] In 1686 William Anderson owned all of Saxis Island. [Whitelaw, p1276]
Samuel "Fittiman" is mentioned in Whitelaw, p1315, in describing the ownership of tract A170. The Samuel Fittiman portion of the tract was along Euwamus or Bullbegger Branch and east of tract A163 and south of the James Taylor part. The original Patent was to Henry Smith for 2,600 acres. In 1674 Smith assigned it to William Stevens of Rehoboth in Somerset Co, MD. Stevens made no sales and after his death without heirs, his widow Elizabeth became the owner and she married George Layfield. In 1692 George and Elizabeth Layfield sold 600 acres to Samson Allen. Allen promptly sold 200 acres to Samuel Fittiman, who three years later sold it to Phillip Parker, calling it the Henry Sadbury plantation, but there was no other record of that individual. In 1699 Parker and wife Elizabeth sold it back to Fittiman. In 1695 Allen sold the 400 acres balance to Fittiman, so with his repurchase from the Parkers he owned the full 600 acres, and in 1701 he left 200 acres each to his sons Meshack, Shadrack and Joseph. In 1738 the estate of Shadrack was administrated to his brother Joseph, and nothing more appeared on record about Meshack, so it is belived that Joseph became the owner of it all, and in 1752 Joseph Feddiman left his plantation to his son Samuel.
In his Will, dated 2 Nov 1701 and probated 2 Dec 1701, and recorded in Acc Co, VA, Wills &c. 1692-1715(xi), p276, Samuel Fittiman left to his son Meshack 200 acres where I now live. To son Shadrack 200 acres, to son Joseph 200 acres being the remainder of 600 acres. He also left items to his daughters Elizabeth and Mary Fittiman. Using the last name of Fittiman implies they were not yet married. He also left items to William Benston, son of Francis Benston, Sr. and to William Williamson. His wife Elizabeth was the executor. It was witnessed by Robert Pitt, Elizabeth Brodhurst and William Pattison. Samuel was born circa 1640. He married Elizabeth (-----) circa 1660.1 Samuel Feddeman was named as a headright on 18 March 1679/80 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Samuel Fittiman on a certificate granted to Mr. William Anderson for 800 acres of land.2 Samuel died in November 1701.1 Samuel's will was probated on 2 December 1701 at Accomack Co, VA.1

This spelling of "Feddiman" comes from Acc Co, VA, Orders, 1768-1769, p233, where the record shows his estate was administered to George Stewart. Littleton Dennis was the security.
Samuel "Feddeman" is mentioned in Whitelaw, p1315, in describing the ownership of tract A170. In 1752 Joseph Feddiman left his plantation to his son Samuel. In 1757 Samuel Feddeman sold the eastern 300 acres to Jabez Pitt. In 1774 Pitt left jointly to a son John and a daughter Esther and requested another son Jabez to look after the property until the devisess became of age. In 1780 young John had died, so Jabez deeded it all to Esther, who promptly sold to Jabez. In 1793 Jabez and Hannah Pitt sold 149 acres to a William Marshall and it continued in Marshall ownership for some time. In 1794 the Pitts sold another 149 acres to Samuel Wilson Pitt, and he and his wife Elizabeth sold 35 acres to Peter Delastatius, but the balance later was joined with the Houston and other lands which William Selby left to the negroes he had freed.
In 1764 Samuel and Anne Feddeman sold 80 acres to Jabez Blake, it being the southwest corner of his land on the branch. In 1765 Blake died intestate, and in 1786 Daniel and Nancy Taylor deeded the 80 acres to George Corbin, stating that it was Nancy's maiden land, so the inference is that she was a daughter and heir of Blake. Corbin deeded it back to Taylor alone the next year, to give him fee simple title, and in 1794 he left to a son Severn Taylor. A survey of adjacent land in 1815 indicated that this land was then owned by a Purnell Taylor.
In 1765 Samuel and Anne Feddeman gave 242 acres to a son (brother) Joseph, it being north of the Taylor piece along the branch. This is the same Joseph Feddeman who in 1772 left his lands to his daughters Elizabeth, Ann and Esther for five years, after which it was to go to a son Faderick. Samuel was born circa 1708 at Accomack Co, VA. He married Anne (-----) circa 1728.1 Samuel was named as a guardian before 29 March 1743 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Samuel Feddiman, who had been named guardian to Ezekiel Delastatius, heir-at-law to Sabastain Delastatius. (NOTE: He was Ezekiel's Uncle, the brother of his mother Esther.).2 Samuel witnessed a will on 29 June 1747 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Pitts, Samuel Feddeman, Joseph Feddeman & Christopher Banks witnessed the will of Isaac Pitts, son of John & Hannah Pitts.3 Samuel witnessed a will on 5 April 1751 at Accomack Co, VA. Joseph Feddeman

FatherJoseph Feddeman b. c 1686, d. b 29 Jan 1752
This spelling of "Feddeman" comes from Joseph's Will.
This Joseph Feddeman is mentioned in Whitelaw, p1294, in describing the ownership of tract A162. The Joseph Feddeman portion of the tract was south of the Tunnels Mill Branch of Bullbegger Creek and north and/or northwest of Withams. It may have included Tunnels Mill. In 1672 a Patent was issued to Devorax Browne, which was described as being in "Jolles Neck." Browne died and his widow Tabitha married General John Custis of Arlington. In 1693 General Custis gave 500 acres to his "Nephew or Kinsman" John Bradhurst. The land was along Bullbegger Creek east of the Bailey land, and was north of the Loughland land. In 1719 John and Elizabeth Bradhurst sold the north 250 acres on Tunnels Mill Branch to Daniel Stewart. In 1763 Joseph and Jamima Feddeman sold to Samuel Wilson, stating that it had been bought from Stewart, but five years later, Wilson deeded it back. In 1772 Joseph Feddeman left it to his daughters Elizabeth and Ann for five years, after which it was to go to a son Faderick, but he died without heir. In 1779 William and Elizabeth Underhill and Ann Feddeman sold to Samuel Wilson, who resold to William Selby, and it became a part of the large plantation he later left to W.S. Tunnell. In 1767 William and Sophia Milbourn sold 9 acres to Joseph Feddeman, and additional acreage a few years later. In 1784 Joshua and Esther Broadwater sold 75 acres and a mill to William Selby. The deed stated that Joseph Feddeman had left it to his daughters Esther and Ann for five years and then to his son Faderick, who died without issue. Ann had married a Merrill and had issue, but both she and the child died, so the title had gone to the grantor Esther.
In his Will, written 20 Feb 1772 and probated 31 Mar 1772, recorded in Acc Co, VA, Wills &c. 1767-1772, p673, Joseph Feddeman left to his daughter Elizabeth the plantation where I now live containing 120 acres for 5 years. I lend 124 acres adjacent to the above land, which I purchased of Samuel Feddeman, to my daughter Ann for the term of 5 years. To my daughter Esther the plantation rented to Isaac Merril for the term of 5 years. At the expiration of the terms aforesaid, the said lands, together with the lands I bought of Samuel Wilson and the land now rented to Ezekiel Broadwater, with all my mills, to my son Faderick Feddeman. Brother Meshack Feddeman and friend George Corbin and my son Faderick Executors. Witnesses Ezekiel Broadwater, William Merril, and Ann Warrington. Codicil: To daughter Esther part of the land now rented to Ezekiel Broadwater adjacent to the lands before given her, for the term of 5 years, and my desire is that Ann Warrington live with my said daugher Ann for the term of 4 years to take care of her. The 124 acres lent to my daughter Ann to include the 14 acres to be conveyed to me by John Pitts. Witnesses William Merril, Jabez Pitt, Ezekiel Broadwater. Joseph was born circa 1730 at Accomack Co, VA. Joseph witnessed a will on 29 June 1747 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Pitts, Samuel Feddeman, Joseph Feddeman & Christopher Banks witnessed the will of Isaac Pitts, son of John & Hannah Pitts.1 Joseph was living on 3 January 1752 at Accomack Co, VA.
