William was born circa 1676 at Accomack Co, VA.1 On 2 Jun 1697, Samuel Young sold to William Young, for 4,500 pounds of Tobacco, 100 acres "on the south side of head Island Creek, part of land William Jarman bought of Call John West" (Acc Co Wills & Etc, 1692 - 1715, part 1, p. 277). In June of 1698, William German gave William Young a quit claim to the same land (p. 355), saying that John Marvel, Junr got the land from William German by serving him until he was twenty-one, that Marvel had sold it to Samuel Young, who had sold to his brother William Young, who now owns it. William was named as administrator of an estate on 7 June 1698 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that William Young was named to settle the estate of his brother Henry Young. William Hudson was the security..2 On the 3rd day of 8 ber" (October) 1699, he bought an additional tract of land and marsh on the south side of "Gilford" Creek from Robert Abbot (Acc Co Wills & c. 1692 - 1715, part 1, p. 385). No acreage or consideration was given in the deed, but the land was called "Iland ridge" and was near Jobs Island. The Quit Rents of Virginia for 1704, show William Young of Accomack County owning 144 acres.3 On 7 August 1700, one Elizabeth Thorn gave an indenture binding her daughter Ann, who was in her ninth year, to William Young for seven years four months (Acc Co Wills & c., 1692-1715, part 1, p. 424). It can surely be assumed that William Young was married by this date and that his wife would be in charge of Ann Thorn.3 He married Patience Ewell, daughter of James Ewell and Anne Smith, circa 1704. In his will of 24 Apr 1728 George Ewell named a cousin (meaning niece) Comfort Young..4 A deed of 6 January 1712/13 shows William Young buying 50 acres of marsh from William Darter (Wills & Etc. 1692 - 1715, part 3, p. 111).The deed places the marsh on the south side of France Creek, near land of Robert Justis and John Blocksom and adjoining 70 acres of land and marsh "ye said William Young bought of me". No deed has been found for this last 70 acres. William Young served on the Accomack County grand jury on 3 May 1726 (Acc Co Orders 1724 - 1731, p. 52). On 7 October 1729, he took a Negro boy named Robin to court to have his age judged. He was adjudged to be nine years old (Acc Co Orders 1724 - 1731, p. 171). William Young, Senr bought 10 acres for 650 pounds tobacco from William Hickman on 4 May 1730, land on Island Ridge (Acc Co Deeds, Wills & Etc. 1729 - 1737, part 1, p. 82). He bought 45 acres on France Creek from William Hickman for 10 pounds on 29 October 1736 (part 2, p. 50) and an additional 11 acres on Island Creek for 2 pounds 10 shillings, from Woodman Bloxom on 29 December 1745 (Acc Co Deeds Wills & Etc. 1137 - 1741, p.481). He made a will on 22 February 1745 at Accomack Co, VA. William Young sold no land, so, on 22 Feb 1744/45, when he wrote his will, he owned a total of 330 acres on both sides of Island Creek, which became Young's Creek in time, and north towards Guilford Creek. His will was proved and recorded on 26 Jun 1748, showing he was circa 75 years of age when he died. He left the use of his two older slaves, Robin and Judith, one-half the plantation "where I now live," with one-half his personal estate, to his wife Patience, during her widowhood. These slaves, his land and marshes, and personal property were then to be divided equally between his sons John Young and William Young, with a few exceptions. He left two slaves to daughter Ann Collins and at her death one was to go to "my grandson Thomas Jenkins". He gave each son two slaves. He left his home and orchard to son John Young. He signed his will with his mark. Sons John & William residual legatees & Exrs. Witt: John Wise, Jr., Richard Sanders, Anne Hindmane, Southey Rew, Southey Rew, Jr..5 William died in June 1748.5 William's will was probated on 28 June 1748 at Accomack Co, VA. John Younge heir at law to the testator..5

William was born circa 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. William Young II, born circa 1710, was called William Young, Junr in Accomack County records until about the time his father died in 1748 and then William Young until 1769, near the time a son of the same name came of age. After 1769, William Young II was most often referred to as William Young Senr, until he died in 1781..2 William Young, Junr was appointed constable "in room of Southy Rew" on 5 January 1731/2 (Acc Co Orders 1731 - 1736, p. 14). William Lucas was appointed in his place on 3 April 1734, for William Young, Junr was "Living out of his prescint" (Acc Co Orders 1731 - 1736, p. 119). This was around the time he married, so perhaps he moved from the Guilford area temporarily to his wife's land which was "on the Seaside". He married Margaret Dutton, daughter of Elizabeth Dutton, circa 1734. William Young II married circa 1734, Margaret Dutton, the daughter of Elizabeth Dutton. Capt. George Hope in his will of 1722 gave his servant Elizabeth Dutton her freedom and 100 acres of land for her lifetime, specifying that after her death the land was to go to her daughter Margaret (Acc Co Wills, Deeds & c 1715 - 1729, part 1, p. 424). William Young and wife Margaret sold this land to Arthur Emmerson for 86 pounds on 28 June 1753 (Acc Co Deeds 1746 - 1757, p. 451).. William Young, Junr bought his first land, 50 acres, from Henry Grinalls for 15 pounds on 27 January 1740/1 (Acc Co Deeds 1737 - 1746, p. 201). The deed placed the land "on Bayside on an Island called Jobs Island or hills choice". On 1 September 1744, William Young, Junr, son of William Young, bought 10 acres for 30 shillings from Henry Hickman, George Hickman, and Edward Hickman (Acc Co Deeds 1737 - 1746, p. 431). William was named in his father's will on 22 February 1745 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son William in the will of William Younge..1 He heired approximately 165 acres of land and marsh from his father in 1748. While there is no record of how his father's 330 acres were divided, later records indicate William Young II owned the northern part, near Guilford Creek. William Young bought 100 acres of land and marsh on the south side of Hunting from Mark Ewell on 2 January 1754 for 20 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1746 - 1757, p. 481). On 28 August 1764, William Young and Benjamin Parks bought "one undivided Water Grist Mill on a Branch of Back Creek" from Solomon Gladding for 65 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 318). On 1 April 1767 William Young and Benjamin Parks petitioned the Accomack County Court that a road leading to their mill on the north side of Back Creek Branch "maybe made a Publick Road" (Acc Co Orders 1767 - 1768, p. 41). The request was granted on 30 September 1767 (Acc Co Orders 1767 - 1768, p. 26). On 30, April 1771, William Young and wife Margaret sold Benjamin Parks his half of the "Water Grist Mill purchase of Solomon Gladding" for 50 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1770 - 1771, p. 32). By this time it is likely William Young had built another water mill on his own property on Guilford Creek, for he owned one when he died. William Young, Senr bought 450 acres from George Scott on 6 January 1770, for 450 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 672). On 10 February 1770, he and wife Margaret sold their son, William Young, Junr, 200 acres of this land on Guilford Creek, for 233 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 713). William Young II continued to buy and, with his wife Margaret, sell land in the Guilford area throughout his lifetime. At his death he would have been one of the larger landowners in the area. It is apparent he was an educated man for the times, for on each of the deeds and on his will, he signed his name, while his wife" made her mark." He made a will on 10 March 1781 at Accomack Co, VA. To son William Young all the land over the Gut where the mill stands, that side next the Warehouse. To wife Margaret. To son George Young. To daughter Anne Savage. To daughter Mary Savage. To son Thomas. To son James the remaining part of my land where I now live. To son Ezekiel land next to my son William. Wife to have use of my water mill during her widow, reversion to my sons William, Ezekiel & James. To sons William, Ezekiel & James 50 acres of marsh on Guilford Creek. To my 4 grandchildren Peggy & Anna Bella Stokely & William Young Burk & Scarburgh Stokely. To son Thomas 50 acres of Marsh on France Creek. Sons Richard, William, George, Ezekiel & James Young & daughters Mary Savage & Anne Savage residual legatees - Son William Exr. - Witt: Parker Parradice, Peggy Hickman, Robert Joins..3 William died in April 1781.3 William's will was probated on 25 April 1781 at Accomack Co, VA. Richard Young named heir at law to the testator..3

William was born circa 1745 at Accomack Co, VA. William Young III, like his father, was called William Young, Junr until near the time of his father's death in 1781. He became plain William Young from circa 1775 to circa 1798, when his name appeared on Accomack County records as William Young, Senr. When his children sold a part of his land, after his death, the deed speaks of him as Major William Young.. He bought his first land on 2 April 1768, 25 acres on Hunting Creek from John Lewis for 25 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 580). He sold his land to his brother, Richard Young, on 1 March 1770 for 35 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 684). On 10 February 1770, William Young, Junr was deeded 200 acres on Guilford Creek by his parents for 233 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 113). This was land his father had bought from George Scott the previous month, 450 acres for 450 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 672). On 21 November 1770, William Young, Junr sold 16 acres "land whereon said William now lives" to Ephraim Vessells (Wessells) for 20 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1770 - 1777, p. 21). On 30 October 1770, William Young, Junr gave an acre of his land on Guilford Creek for a new public warehouse for the inspection of tobacco (Acc Co Orders 1770 - 1773, p. 112). On 26 January 1774, William Young gave a bond, as he qualified as Assistant Inspector of Tobacco "at Pitts and Young's "Warehouse in this County" (Acc Co Orders 1774 - 1777, p. 18). His father, William Young Senr and James Henry were his securities. He married Elizabeth 'Betty' Crippen, daughter of Robert Crippen and Leah Fooks, on 28 November 1775 at Accomack Co, VA. Thomas Crippen was the security on the M.L.B. of William Young Jr. and Elizabeth Crippen. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Crippen, who died intestate by 25 January 1757. His widow, Leah Crippen, was appointed administratrix of his estate on that date (Acc Co Orders 1753 - 1763, p. 171) and guardians for his orphans, Rachel, Sarah, and Betty, were named soon thereafter (Acc Co Orders 1753 - 1763, p. 303). Robert Crippen's widow married (2) Thomas Hickman. Leah Crippen Hickman was the daughter of Daniel Fookes, who died testate in 1740 (Acc Co Wills 1737 - 1743, p.237). Thomas Hickman and wife Leah sold land that had belonged to her sister, Sarah Fookes, on 30 September 1761 (Acc Co Deeds 1757 - 1770, p. 189). On 31 January 1787, William Young and wife Betty sold, to his brother Thomas Young, 40 acres for 150 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1783 - 1788, p. 391). This was Crippen land on the sea side that Betty/Elizabeth had inherited..2 At the Accomack County Court of 29 November 1779, it was "Ordered. that the following Persons be recommended to his excellency the Governor as fitting persons to be appointed officers of the Militia, to-wit: William Selby Coll. for the Upper battalion; Selby Simpson Lieut Coll. for the same & William Young Major" (Acc Co Orders 1777 - 1780, p. 431). Richard Justice was named Captain to William Young's company. William was named in his father's will on 10 March 1781 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son William Young in the will of William Young, Sr., wife Margaret..3 The records do not show William Young III buying other land after his purchase of the Scott land in 1770. Apparently he inherited the balance of this tract, 250 acres, from his father in 1781 ("all the land over the Gut where the Mill stands, that side next the Warehouse"), for he owned 400 acres in 1800 (Leonard W. Johnson, Ebb and Flow, McClure Printing Co., Inc, Verona, VA, 1982, p. 202). He had sold. circa 54 acres by this time. On 11 March 1797, William Young mortgaged 200 acres of land to Henry Fletcher for 65 pounds 6 shillings (Acc Co Deeds 1787 - 1800, p. 72), saying the land was on the south side of Guilford Creek. On 14 July 1798, William Young, Senr, planter, and wife Betty sold 16 acres of land and marsh on Guilford Creek to George C. Hinman for 71 pounds 3 shillings 9 pence (Acc Co Deeds 1787 - 1800, p. 252) and on 6 December 1798, they sold 22 acres "near head of Jobs Island Creek" to Ephraim and John Vessels for 90 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1787 - 1800, p. 265). Between 1800 and. the time he wrote his will, William Young Senr sold a total of 124 acres of land (Acc Co Deeds 1800-1804, pp. 74, 80, 81, 337, 392 and District Court Deeds 1800 - 1806, pp. 40, 179, 180, 246). 46 acres were sold to Dennis Clayton, 25 acres to son William Young, Junr and 26 acres with a house to son Robert Young. He made a will on 26 February 1802 at Accomack Co, VA. Sons William Young & Robert Young Extrs. My land to be sold next to John Wessells, joining the 8 acres Wessells bought … between Young & Jeremiah Mason running about south corner to a line by Wessells land. The bonds of William Young Jr., Robert Young & Dennis Clayton to go to help pay my debts. Remainder of my land & marsh to my 4 sons James Young, Samuel Young, Thomas Young & Isaac Young. To daughter Leah Young Negro Ned. My other 2 Negro boys to be sold to pay my debts. If there is money left after paying my debts, then to daughter Sarah Young & my niece Peggy Young. To my son William Young ... To son Robert Young ... Remainder to my 7 children Robert Young, James Young, Samuel Young, William Young, Thomas Young, Isaac Young & Leah Young..4 William died in December 1802.4 William's will was probated on 27 December 1802 at Accomack Co, VA. There being no witnesses the will was proved by Crippen Taylor, Thomas Hickman & Solomon Ewell testifying as to the handwriting, with Jonathan Mears & Robert Savage securities..4 William estate was settled on 25 June 1804 at Accomack Co, VA. The inventory of William Young was filed on 25 June 1804 (Acc Co Wills 1804 - 1806, p. 108). It consisted of personal property with a total value of 100 pounds 2 shillings 10 pence. An audit followed (Acc Co Wills 1804 - 1806, p. 110), giving the names and amounts of money he owed and showing his debts were fully paid.. On 11 February 1809, Samuel Young and Thomas Young, both of the City of Washington; David James and Leah, his wife; William Young and Sally, his wife, of Accomack County, sold to their brother, Robert Young, 3¼ acres for $158.25, "late the property of Major William Young, deceased, near Guilford warehouse" (Acc Co Deeds 1810 - 1812, p. 80) and on 5 March 1810, brother Isaac sold to Robert Young his rights to the same property for 32 pounds 4 shillings (Acc Co Deeds 1810-1812, p. 152).

Teackle was born circa 1790 at Accomack Co, VA. The tombstone book has a note that a Bible record shows he was born 22 Dec 1782. The 1800 census puts his birth at 1790-1800, the 1810 at 1784-1794, the 1820 at 1775-1794, the 1830 at 1790-1800, the 1840 at 1780-90, the 1850 at 1800 and the 1860 at 1784. It is not certain whether the family was living near Justisville at the time of his birth, or had moved on to Wallops Road near Nelsonia..2 He married Rose Taylor, daughter of Giles Taylor, on 10 July 1812 at Accomack Co, VA. Samule Walston was the security on the M.L.B. of Teackle Justice and Rose Taylor..3 Teackle bought land in 1820 at Nelsonia, Acc Co, VA. Teackle Justice bought two small plots of land in Nelsonia in the 1820s. He purchased 4½ acres on Wallops Road on 29 May 1820, from Thomas Johnson for $200 (Acc Co Deeds 1819-1821, p. 144), and 3 acres from Whittington B. Pool on 31 January 1828 for $35 (Acc Co Deeds 1828-1830, p. 328). The first purchase obviously included a home. Teackle Justice and wife Rosey sold this property as 8½ acres to Parker Shrieves on 24 February 1735 for $160 (Acc Co Deeds 1834-1835, p. 390). By this date, Teackle Justice had moved his family to land between Wallops Road and Groten Town, near Mappsville. He purchased 50 acres from Southy Lucas on 2 August 1832 for $140 (Acc Co Deeds 1830-1832, p. 536). The land was bordered on the south by the market road leading from "the red bank known by the name of Lucas Town Road" (present route 691), on the northwest by land of Samuel Nock, on the north and northeast by Boggs branch and on the east by William Marshall and Nicholas P. Godwin. On 25 August 1835, Teackle Justice bought 4½ acres from William Nock, the executor of Sally Downing's estate, for $100, land near his other purchase and bordering Nicholas P. Godwin land (Acc Co Deeds 1834-1835, p. 124). Again, because of the price paid for this small plot of land, there had to have been a building on it. On 26 February, 1835, Teackle Justice bought 30 acres from Nicholas P. Godwin for $200 (Acc Co Deeds 1834-1835, p. 389). This land bordered his other land on the east and was called Boggs Land.
Teackle Justice made two land purchases, in the same area, from Thomas Groton. One on 18 September 1852, for 50 acres at $365 (Acc Co Deeds 1851-1853, p. 495) and the other on 8 August 1860 for 45 acres at $600 (Acc Co Deeds 1860-1862, p. 495). He now owned 180 acres on the north side of route 691, bordered on the west by Groton land. Mr. Roger Groton, who still lives here, on property purchased by his ancestors circa 1830, tells of an old house that stood on the Teackle Justice land. He says it was the old Eastern Shore type, consisting of big room, little room. colonnade and kitchen and it stood between the road and the Justice cemetery.
With Mr. Groton's help, the cemetery has been located, back in the open field, approximately two-thirds the distance to the woods. It contains only one broken tombstone and only the Justice part of the name on it can be read. Mr. Groton remembers it as a stone bearing the name of one of Teackle Justice's daughters. There seems little doubt but that Teackle Justice and others of his family were buried here.. Teackle was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1840 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Teackle Justice, a head of house hold aged 50-60. One son was aged 10 to 15 years, one 15 to 20 years and one 20 to 30 years. The daughter was 20 to 30 years of age. His wife was aged 40 to 50 years..4 He married Tabitha Hinman Hinman? circa 1845.1,5 Teackle was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Teackle Justice the head of HH#1057, a 50 year old farmer with real estate valued at $1,200. Listed with him were the following Justices: Tabitha, age 28; Samuel, a 27 year old laborer; Elizabeth A., age 4; James C., age 3; and David T., age 3/12..5 He married Elizabeth (-----) circa 1859. She was shown as Elizabeth Justice, age 51 in HH#124 headed by Teakle Justice, a 76 year old farmer..6 Teackle was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Teakle Justice the head of HH#124, a 76 year old farmer with real estate valued at $1,500 and personal property valued at $300. Listed with him were the following Justices: Elizabeth, age 51; Samuel, age 37; Elizabeth, age 15; Edward T., age 10; David T., age 7; and George H., age 5. His other two older sons, both farmers, were living near-by, William Justice, aged 43, in household #125 and Thomas Justice, aged 33, in household #123..6 Teackle sold land on 28 December 1867 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Teackle Justice and wife Tabitha sold 50 acres of his Groton Town land to William C. Northam for $600 (Acc Co Deeds 1867-1868, p. 330). He sold the 50-acre tract called "Groton Land" to Whittington W. Trader on 10 July 1869 for $550 (Acc Co Deeds 1869-1871, p. 212).. He made a will on 30 July 1869 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Thomas Justice all that he owes me, which I consider his portion of my estate. To dau. Elizabeth A. Justice $50. All the balance, real and personal, to my children William Justice, Samuel Justice, Elizabeth A. Justice, James E. Justice, David T. Justice and George H. Justice, equally divided. Friend E. H. Conquest exec. Wit: John W. Kelley, Whittington W. Trader, Margaret Kelley..7 Teackle was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1870 at Metompkin District, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Teackle Justice, a retired farmer, in the household of his daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Whittington Trader. His home farm was being tended by his son James E. Justice and his new wife Elizabeth. Living with them was Samuel Justice, aged 48, and Hampton Justice, the youngest of Teackle's sons, aged 15..8 Teackle died before 27 February 1871. It was on this date that his will was probated. Surety Joseph Conquest..7 Teackle estate was settled on 18 March 1871 at Accomack Co, VA. On 18 March 1871, an inventory, appraisement and account of sales of the personal property of Teackle Justice was recorded (Acc Co Inventories & c 1869-187l, p. 453). Since he had given up farming and keeping house, and had moved in with his daughter, the list of his personal property was a short one, including a cow and a sheep, a canoe, a chest and a "looking Glass," a few tools and "one old Brass Kettle." Most of these articles were purchased by his children. He had borrowed $536.36 on 26 August 1868 from William Walston (Acc Co Deeds 1867-1869, p. 330) and this debt was still outstanding. On 21 May 1872, Edward H. Conquest, executor of Teackle Justice, sold the remaining 75 acres of his land to Parker Bird for $801.50 (Acc Co Deeds 1871-1872, p. 526). Byrds are still living on some of this land.

Mary Frances Carey of New Chruch, VA and Neil Justice of Dallas, TX believe that this Ralph Justice was a son of William Justice of Charles City Co, VA and his wife Mary Frame, who after William's death in Charles City County by 3 Feb 1663/4 moved to Accomack Co and married (2) William Eborne and after his death by 16 Apr 1675 she married (3) Thomas Chappell whom she pre-deceased. This is based on the fact that Mary Frame and her brother Arthur Frame and Ralph Justice all first appeared in Accomack Co records between 1669 and 1676. However, it is not clear why Ralph Justice would have been on a headright list for Ann Toff if he came with his mother and uncle from Charles City County to Accomack County. Ralph was born in 1653 at Accomack Co, VA. He was adjudged to be 16 years old on 23 Nov 1669, which puts his birth at 1653..2 Ralph was named as a headright on 3 October 1669 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Ralph Justice was listed as a headright for Anne Toft when she claimed 2,000 acres of land in Accomack Co for transporting 40 persons into the colony. Three hundred acres of this patent were near the Seaboard between 1,450 acres of Col. Edmund Scarburgh and the main branch of Gargaphia Creek and the other 1,700 acres were adjacent to Swancutt and Matappany Creeks near the Maryland line..3,4 On 23 November 1669, the Accomack County Court recorded that "This day Ralph Justice servant to Mrs. Anne Toft was brought to ye court to have his age judged whom ye court adjudged to be 16 years. It is therefore ordered that ye said Ralph Justice serve his mistress eight years according to act of assembly and at ye expiration of ye time to have corne & clothes according to ye custome of ye country."2 Ralph was named as a headright on 16 September 1672 at Accomack Co, VA. Ralph Justice's name was used again as a headright on 16 September 1672, when Capt. John West patented 2000 acres of Accomack County land and for a third time on 25 September 1674, as headright for Lt. Co. John Tillne, when he was granted 1600 acres "between Messongo and Cattaile Creeks" (Nugent, 1666-1695, p. 154). While local records do not show this, 1000 acres of the West patent could have been located between present New Church and Horntown (Whitelaw, p. 1348). These early records show beyond a doubt that Ralph Justice had arrived in Accomack County by late 1669, that he was about 16 years of age at the time and that he became an indentured servant to Mrs. Anne Toft, on her land in Accomack Parish. Indeed, it appears that in these first years, Ralph Justice was living in the area of present-day Horntown and Wattsville, on land that Mrs. Toft later deeded to her three daughters. Some of the same land was purchased by Ralph Justice's descendants in the early 1900s and one farm is owned and occupied by the family at the present. This land is on Chincoteague Bay, north of Mosquito Creek, which is the present name for old Chincoteague Creek..5 He married Mary Abbott, daughter of John Abbott Sr. and Ann (-----), circa 1675. These records also indicate that Ralph Justice had married in early 1675, at about 22 years of age, approximately two years before his indenture was completed. His wife was Mary Abbot, daughter of John Abbot. This is shown by a deed of a gift of 16 February 1681, from John Abbot to his grandson and namesake, John Justice, the son of Ralph and Mary (Acc Co Wills & Deeds 1676-1690, p. 302). The gift was two cows, and it is suggested it was made on the occasion of his grandson's birth. Evidently, Ralph Justice owned other cows by this time, for on 11 January 1680, his cattle mark was recorded, at the request of John Abbot (Acc Co Wills & Deeds 1676-1690, p. 244). John Abbot had been a headright for Mr. William Whittington on 2 October 1672, when he patented 5800 acres "all of Jengoteag Island" (Nugent, Vol. II, p. 115). Abbot died testate in 1695 and named a daughter as Mary Justice in his will (Acc Co Wills & c 1692-1715, p. 73). He owned land on Timber Creek (Whitelaw pp. 1118 and 1119), which became Back Creek, the northern branch of Hunting Creek, on which the town of Justisville is found today..1 The records next show a tragedy, as it was recorded: "Gentlemen of the Jurie you are to understand that our soverigne lord the king hath lost a subject which is a nurse child at Robert Atkinsons who is reported to be drowned in the creek. Your charge is to enquire by what or whose means the said child came by his death which when you have considered and inquired you shall draw up your verdict in writing subscribe it with your hands and present it and the subscriber so help you God given under my hand this 1st day of June 1677 John Wallop att. We the subscibers find that said child was accidently drowned by falling into Gingteage creek none being present and that the child was named Ralph Justice son of Ralph Justice unto which verdict we subscribe our hand this 5th day of June 1677."6 Ralph bought land on 9 October 1683 at Accomack Co, VA. Ralph Justice began purchasing land on 9 October 1683, when a deed was recorded for 200 acres to him from Daniel and Anne (Toft) Jenifer (Acc Co Wills & Deeds 1676-1690, p.352). The deed states that this land, that Justice bought for "four thousand pounds tobacco and casque", was "where he doth now inhabit". It was located along the northern branch of Guilford Creek, between present-day Guilford and Nelsonia, to the south of the road from Bloxom to Nelsonia (Whitelaw, pp. 1186 and 1193). On 18 November 1689, Ralph Justice, tanner, bought 82 adjacent acres from Edward Williams (Acc Co Wills & Deeds 1676-1690, p. 509).The deed places this tract on the northwest branch of Guilford Creek and states it was part of the Thomas Nixson patent. He bought an additional 200 acres of the same land from Edward Nickson on 6 February 1699/1700 (Acc Co Wills and Etc, 1692-1717, p. 395) and on the same date, another 115 acres from Griffith Savage, Jr. (p. 399). On 17 November 1690, Ralph Justice bought 280 acres from Daniel Jenifer for eight thousand seven hundred pounds of tobacco (Acc Co Wills & Deeds 1676-1690, p. 538). This land was bordered on the east "by maine road", southeast by John Barnes land, and was on the seaside of the county, northwest of Hog Neck (Whitelaw, p. 1173). Ralph Justice also made two land purchases from William Jarman. The first on 16 June 1691, for 211 acres on the south side of France Creek (Acc Co Wills & c, Orders 1682-1697, p. 203) and the second on 17 February 1695, for an unspecified additional acreage of land and march of the same tract (Acc Co Wills and Etc. 1692-1715, p. 171). This land was on the bayside of the county, north of John Abbot's land (Whitelaw, p. 1107), approximately due west of the present-day village of Clam and only slightly north of present Justisville.. Ralph was security on the administration of an estate on 2 December 1701 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Ralph Justice & William Chance were securities on the estate of John Lewis, which was administered to his widow Elizabeth Lewis..7 Ralph Justice, by 1700, at age 47, owned three tracts of land extending across Accomack County, from Hog Neck on the east to France Creek on the west, with his largest holding in the Guilford-Nelsonia area. The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, compiled by Annie Laurie Wright Smith, p. 51), credit him with 1050 acres in Accomack County. However, he willed a total of 1280 acres to descendants, when he died in 1729 at 76 years of age. As Ralph Justice bought land and became more prosperous, his name appeared more frequently in Accomack County records. He became the owner of indentured servants himself, shown by a document signed by one Will Prichett, who had been "recovered" by Ralph Justice, and promised to serve him faithfully for one more year of his indenture (Acc Co Wills & Deeds 1676-1690, p. 512). He purchased slaves and brought them to court for judging their ages (Acc Co Wills, Deeds & Orders 1692-1715, p. 237; Acc Co Orders 17031709, p. 104a; and Acc Co Orders 1724-1731, p. 65). His name also appeared frequently in various suits, some of which he won and others in which he was required to pay fines. He served on the Grand Jury several times in the late 1680s (Acc Co Orders 1682-1697, p147, 170, etc.). He was appointed Constable on 2 April 1700, in the place of John Bloxom who asked to be relieved of his duties (Acc Co Orders 1697-1703, p. 90). He served in this capacity until 6 December 1715, when it was "ordered that Simon Michael be constable in his stead" (Acc Co Orders 1714-1717, p. 14). Ralph was security on the administration of an estate on 3 October 1721 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Benjamin Coe was granted to his widow Mary Coe with Ralph Justis & John Justis securities..8 He made a will on 17 September 1729 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Richard my dwelling plantation & 600 acres thereto belonging after the death of his mother, also 200 acres of land & marsh leased of Thomas Hope for the term of the lease. To son Robert 300 acres land & marsh where he now lives during his life reversion to his son Richard. To daughter Elizabeth Johnson. Daughter Sarah Kitson. Grandaughter Mary Parramore. Dau Mary Baker. To grandson Richard Bundick. To grandson Abbot Bundick. To grandaughter Sarah Justice, daughter of Abbot Justice 280 acres which I bought of Mr. Jenifer. To sons Richard & John 100 acres of swamp. Wife Mary to have use of my plantation during her life. Balance of estate to be divided in 6 parts & to my children John, Robert, Richard, Elizabeth, Sarah and the children of my daughter Susanna Bundick when they come to age or marry. Wife & son Richard Exrs. Witt: Richard Kitson, Elias Bell, William Dalton. Besides the real estate bequeathed his sons and granddaughter, Ralph Justice left his heirs 13 slaves and a large assortment of farm tools, tanners tools, coopers tools, livestock and household furnishings. Among the latter were a dozen silver spoons, three old Bibles, chests, cupboards, beds, cooking utensils, and personal apparel, including "one fine Hatt Moth Eaten". His inventory also included various lengths of materials - holland, linnen, Scotch cloth, dimity, silk crape, poplin, callimanco, damask, silk, mohair, kersey and swanskin (Ralph Justice Inventory, Acc Co Deeds & Wills, 1729-1737, p. 49)..9 Ralph died before 2 December 1729 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated..9

| Marriage* | He married Mary Abbott, daughter of John Abbott Sr. and Ann (-----), circa 1675. 1118 and 1119), which became Back Creek, the northern branch of Hunting Creek, on which the town of Justisville is found today..1 |

Robert was born circa 1690 at Accomack Co, VA.2 Robert bought land on 5 January 1714 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Justice bought 100 acres of land and marsh on or near France Creek from William Darter (Acc Co Wills & etc. 1692-1715, part III, p. 172). The deed states the land was bound on the west by Ralph Justice's land. Since his father Ralph left him 300 entailed acres "where he now lives," it is obvious that Robert Justice was living on this land by 1729 and probably soon after 1713. It can be assumed Robert Justice was over 21 years of age in 1713/4, when he made the purchase from Darter, placing his birth circa 1690.. He married Comfort Hope, daughter of Capt. George Hope and Temperance Waddelowe, after 24 April 1728. The will of Temperance Kitchen in 1738 (Acc Co Wills 1737-1743, p. 105) named Comfort Justice as a sister, while Robert Justice was to settle the part of her estate in Somerset County, Maryland. She directed that money be spent to brick her grave with that of Major Scarburgh. The will of Capt. George Hope, in 1722, named both Comfort Ewell and Temperance Scarburgh as daughters (Acc Co Wills, Deeds & c 1715-1729, p. 424). Mark Ewell died testate in 1727, naming sons as James, Mark, George Hope, and leaving an unnamed widow (Acc Co Wills, Deeds & c 1715-1729, p. 134). These three wills, together with that of his father Ralph Justice, show Robert Justice married Comfort Ewell, the widow of Mark Ewell and daughter of Capt. George Hope, soon after 1727 and had a son Richard Justice by 1729. Comfort Ewell also had daughters, Ann, Elizabeth and Sarah. It is entirely possible and indeed, probable, that Robert Justice had been married before 1727, since he would have been approximately 37 years of age in that year. If so, the records do not show this..2 Robert was named in his father's will on 17 September 1729 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son Robert in the will of Ralph Justice, wife Mary..1 He was shown as Robert Justice in the will of Temperance Kitchen and he was to give bond to Mr. William Kitchen for my estate in Somerset County not already disposed of. She also named a sister Comfort Justice, who was evidently the wife of Robert Justice. She directed that money be spent to brick her grave with that of Major Scarburgh.3 He married Mary Nock, daughter of John Nock and Mary Barnes, circa 1739. Comfort Justice died and Robert Justice remarried circa 1735, Mary Nock, daughter of John Nock. John Nock, in his will of 1740, named a daughter as Mary Justice (Acc Co Wills 1737-1743, p. 222). This marriage is reaffirmed by a deed of 23 June 1766. Robert Justice and Mary his wife sold to John Young, for ten pounds, 50 acres of land "formerly purchased by George Nock of John Joyning to John Kitson's Land" (Acc Co Deeds 1770-1777, p. 420)..4 Robert was named as the executor of a will on 24 April 1744 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that John Kitson relinquished his right to qualify to settle the estate of his mother-in-law Mary Justice and Richard, Robert and Ralph Justice qualified as Extrs..5 Robert bought land on 18 June 1771 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Justice Senr and Joseph Webb (wife Sarah) bought 115 acres from William Young Senr and wife Margaret, for 115 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1770-1777, p. 31). The land was bordered on "france creek running on the said Robert Justices line." This land was sold, 11 acres on 24 August 1771 to John Young and George Hope Ewell, and 105 acres on 1 July 1772 to Ephraim Vessels (Acc Co Deeds 1770-1777, pp. 83 and l22). One of these deeds states that Joseph Webb lived on the land. It is suggested that Webb married Robert Justice's daughter Sarah.. He made a will on 1 December 1777 at Accomack Co, VA. To Robert Webb 1/2 my estate & for want of heirs to be divided between his mother & Sarah, the daughter of Isaiah Justis. To Elizabeth Young's 3 children the other 1/2 of my estate. Isaiah Justis to have the use of my lands during his life & then to his daughter Sarah. Jacob White, Sr., & Isaiah Justis Exrs. Witt: Robert Parks, Anne Ewell. (NOTE: By this time he was a very old man, approximately 90 years of age. At this age, his children would have been grown long since. 300 acres of his land had been entailed, by his father, to pass to his son Richard and he owned outright, only the 100 acres he had bought in 1713/4.).6 Robert died before 28 March 1780 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated. Richard Justis Sr. named heir at law. (NOTE: As has been related, Ralph Justice's will clearly shows that Robert Justice had the one son Richard. The names of other children have to be determined from other sources. The Accomack County Tax List for 1783 shows seven Justices subject to personal property tax, with four names grouped together. These were obviously living as neighbors and, since other Justices in the list can be accounted for, it appears these were Robert Justice's family. They were: Robert Justice, Richard Justice Senr, Rachel Justice, and Isaiah Justice. Richard Justice Senr appears in other records as owning the entailed land his grandfather left him.).6

If so, the records do not show this..2 |

He was shown as Robert's son Richard in the will of Ralph Justice, wife Mary..2 He married Anne Parker, daughter of George Parker (Parkers Creek) and Amey 'Naomi' Major, circa 1755 at Accomack Co, VA.1,3 Richard witnessed a will on 7 February 1756 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Richard Justice, James Fitzgearld & Thomas Webb witnessed the will of Jacob Bishop. John Kitson Sr., John Nock & Thomas Webb were to divide the estate. (NOTE: Thomas Webb probably married Richard Justice's sister and John Kitson also married a Justice.).4 Richard was named as an heir on 2 November 1760 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a brother-in-law Richard Justice in the will of Sacker Parker, mother Naomi Parker. Since he named a sister Rachel Parker, that leaves either Anne or Amy as the wife of Richard. And since Sacker also named a cousin (niece) Ann Justice, daughter of Richard, then it likely that Richard Justice married his sister Anne..3 He married Esther (-----) circa 1770.1 He made a will on 10 May 1784 at Accomack Co, VA. Robert was born circa 1730 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He married (-----) (-----) circa 1748. There is not much known about this Robert Justice. He was not named in his father's will and he did not own land. His name first appeared in Accomack County records on 27 July 1768, when Richard Justice, Senr. brought a suit against Robert Justice, Junr. (Orders 1768-1769, p. 127). From census records and the birth date of a known son, it is apparent Robert Justice, Junr. was born circa 1730 and married, for the first time, circa 1748. The 1800 census shows him living on Wallops Road, aged over 45 years, with a wife of the same age, and a son in the household, aged 10 to 16 years. There was also a daughter aged 16 to 25 years. The son would have been William Justice of Robert, who married in 1812, Rebecca Gladding, and, since he was born circa 1790, some 40 years after the birth of a known son, it can be assumed that Robert Justice, Junr. was married twice, at least.2 Robert was on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1783. It was in this year that Robert Justice, Junr., was living on the bayside, near France Creek and Justisville, among his brothers, but had moved nearer the center of the county by 1800, when the census places him on Wallops Road (U.S.13). It appears he was living near present-day Nelsonia at this time.. He married Mary (-----) circa 1790.3 He made a will on 28 June 1811 at Accomack Co, VA. Wife Mary Justice Extr. Robert Snead, James James & William Onions securities. It is also noted that he, too, was an old man for his time when he died, being near 80 years of age. All his children would have been grown. Since he owned no land to leave them, it is not surprising they were not named in his will, or that of his widow..3

Richard was born in 1749 at Accomack Co, VA. It is entirely possible that Richard Justice of Robert married circa 1770, when he would have been in his early 20's. He could have had children by such a marriage who did not survive him. There is no record that shows this. Richard served in the Revolutionary War in in 1775. He was shown as Richard Justice, a Captain in the Militia..2 Richard was on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1783. Richard Justice's name first appeared in Accomack County records in the tax lists of personal property, 1783-1792 (pp. 124 and 125). He was listed here as Richard Justice of Robert and had only himself as a grown male in the household. His name next appeared in the 1800 census, as Richard Justice of Robert, 26 to 45 years of age (census ages during this period were often approximate), with two males in his household under 10 years, a wife 26 to 45 years, and another female under 10 years. This record indicates he was the Richard Justice who obtained a license to marry Elizabeth Robinson on 22 October 1789 (Mar. Bonds 1774-1806, p. 16), when he would have been 40 years of age. His name also appeared in the 1810, the 1820, and the 1830 census records for Accomack County. The latter puts his age at 70 to 80 years. His wife had died by 1830 and his son Teackle Justice was living next door, aged 30 to 40 years.. He married Elizabeth Robinson on 22 October 1789 at Accomack Co, VA. James Rooks was the security on the 1789 Acc Co M.L.B. of Richard Justice and Elizabeth Robinson..3 Richard was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1800 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. His name next appeared in the 1800 census, as Richard Justice of Robert, 26 to 45 years of age (census ages during this period were often approximate), with two males in his household under 10 years, a wife 26 to 45 years, and another female under 10 years. This record indicates he was the Richard Justice who obtained a license to marry Elizabeth Robinson on 22 October 1789 (Acc Marriage Bonds 1774-1806, p. He married Tabitha (-----) circa 1800.4 Richard bought land in 1809 at Accomack Co, VA. This Richard Justice purchased several small parcels of land between 1809 and 1821. The first was 6 acres on Wallop Road opposite "Kegotank," from Samuel Lippencott in June 1808, for which he paid 30 pounds (Acc Co Deeds 1807-1810, p. 316). On 20 January 1810, he paid 29 pounds to Joseph Brimer for 7½ acres in the same area (Acc Co Deeds 1810-1812, p. 39). He purchased 6 acres 3 roods and 34 poles from Brimer on 20 March 1816 (Acc Co Deeds 1815-18l7, p. 400). He paid 41 pounds 16 shillings for this plot and it joined his holdings on the southwest. An additional acre was purchased on 22 November 1819 from Eli Shay for $16 (Acc Co Deeds 1819-1821, p. 27). A final purchase, made on 18 August 1820, from John S. Bundick, was for 10½ acres at a cost of $400. This tract was bound on the southwest by a road running from Kegotank to Guilford and on the southeast by Wallops Road (Acc Co Deeds 1819-1821, p. 305). After Richard Justice's death, his daughter Margaret Justice bought her two brother's shares of this land in two deeds. The first, on 28 July 1855, in which the whole tract of "33 acres" was called Hell Town and located near Modest Town (Deeds 1853-1855, part II, p. 673). The second on 1 January 1858, when the track was spoken of as containing 34 acres and was bordered on the east by Wallops Road and William Laws land, on the west by lands of Joseph C. Justice, and on the north by George Shreaves (Deeds 1858-1860, p. 338). Margaret Justice paid a total of $675 for the two shares. Subsequent owners show this land was located on the northwest corner of the stop light at present-day Nelsonia. The deed of 1858 excepted a graveyard in making the sale, implying that Richard Justice of Robert and his wife were buried on his land and possibly some of their children. No graveyard has been found on this tract today.. Richard was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1840 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Richard Justice Jun. a head of household age 70-80 (b.c. 1760-70). Listed with him were 1 female age 20-30 and 1 female age 30-40 & no slaves..5 Richard died on 17 May 1850. On 30 June 1851, after his death, a statement was made to the Accomack County Court by his son, Teackle Justice, "in order to obtain for the children of the aforesaid Richard Justice the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832" (Acc Co Orders 1851-1854, p. 52). Teackle Justice declared that his father served, for over two years, in the Accomack County Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was enrolled in a company commanded by Capt. William Justice (his cousin or his father's cousin?), under Col. Southy Simpson. He served in keeping guard at Block House on Folly Creek and various other places. Teackle Justice attested that his father was born in 1749 and was 102 years of age when he died. On 28 July 1851, the Court accepted the evidence and ordered it to be certified that Richard Justice did serve in the Revolutionary War; that he had died on or about 17 May 1850; that he left no widow, but three surviving children, Teackle Justice, Samuel Justice, and Margaret Justice (Orders 1851-1854, p. 64). While these two records give a difference of one year in Richard Justice's birth date and date of death, if he were 102 years old when he died, it will be assumed he was born in 1749 and died in 1850, over 101 years and into his 102nd year.

William was born circa 1790 at Accomack Co, VA.2 He married Rebecca Gladding on 30 March 1812 at Accomack Co, VA. John Nock was the security on the 1812 Acc Co M.L.B. of William Justice of Robert and Rebecca Gladding..1 William bought land on 8 March 1817 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that William Justice of Robert bought 6 acres of land from Henry Smart (Snead?) and wife "in the neighborhood of Mesonga lying on Mesongo Road" for $75 (Acc Co Deeds 1817-1818, p. 98). William Justice and wife Rebecca sold, as 7 acres, to James Northam on 23 December 1822 for $35 (Acc Co Deeds 1822-1844, p. 42). Messongo, at this time, extended from present U.S. 13, westward toward, and on both sides of) Messongo Creek. From the names of the men who witnessed these two deeds, it is judged the 7 acres were southeast of present-day Hallwood, in the Groton Town area. This is the first reference to the Justice family in this part of Accomack County.. He married Tabitha Bloxom, daughter of Jacob Bloxom, on 14 May 1830 at Accomack Co, VA. David Watts and Thomas B. Custis was the security on the M.L.B. of William Justice, widower, and Tabitha Bloxom of Jacob. Another record shows they were married on 14 May 1830..1 He made a will on 28 October 1841 at Accomack Co, VA. Estate to my wife Tabby Justice, my daughter Nancy Justice & my son James Justice (under age 21). David Broadwater Extr. Witt: David Broadwater & Richard Conquest..3 William was named as administrator of an estate on 27 March 1843 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Tabitha Justice was granted to William Justice with George S. Rew & Asa Lewis securities..4 William died before 25 March 1844 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated. Richard Conquest & John W. Feddeman securities. David Broadwater and Richard Conquest were appointed to inventory and appraise the estate, with John Fedderman their security. Since all these men were known residents of upper Accomack County, this had to have been William Justice of Robert. Another deed substantiates this. On 20 January 1843, William Justice of R. sold personal property to Richard Conquest (Acc Co Deeds 1842-1843, p. 682)..3
