Marshall, circa 1915.1 William was living at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.2 William died on 22 August 1929 at Hallwood, Acc Co, VA. W.L. Spencer and Samuel J. Griffith, both aged 49 years and residences of Messongo, were instantly killed at the PA RR crossing at Hallwood Thursday morning at 5:35 a.m. A Ford touring car, was driven by Mr. Griffith, the owner. Mr. Spencer is to be buried in the Lewis Cemetery, survivors were listed (E.S. News, 23 Aug 1929). Contrary to this obituary, most locals remember that the accident was at Horsey, not Hallwood. Evidently he was moved, as he his now at Downing's Cemetery with his wife Ethel, who died in 1957..2 His body was interred at Downing's Cem, Oak Hall, Acc Co, VA.1

Richard Cutler Sr.1

     Richard was born circa 1645. He married Mary|Elizabeth (-----) before 1669.1 In 1669, Richard Cutler and his wife Elizabeth were listed as headrights of Ann Toft. Also in 1672 Richard was listed as a headright of Captain John West. He devised to his son Richard the 150 acres which he had purchased from Charles Leatherbury in 1704. To his son John he devised the 100 acres he had purchased from Wm. Lewis in 1717 together with his lot in Onancock which he had purchased in 1709 (Information from Gladys Elizabeth Cutler Marshall). Richard Cutler Sr. bought land in 1675 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Richard Cutler, Weaver, bought 300 acres of tract A72, between Tasley and Onancock from Roger & Mary Mikell. Richard left this 300 acre home plantation to his sons William & George in 1733.2 Richard was named as an heir on 2 November 1722 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as friend Richard Cutler Sr. in the will of Thomas Rose, unmarried.1 Richard made a will on 17 May 1730 at Accomack Co, VA. To sons George & William Cutler plantation where I now live being 300 acres. To son Richard Cutler 150 acres in the Forked Neck. To son John Cutler 100 acres purchased of William Lewis, with my lot of land & house in Onancock. To daughter Mary Roberts. To grandson Snead. To 5 children Mary. George, Richard, John & William.      Richard was born circa 1726 at Accomack Co, VA. Richard was named in his father's will on 17 March 1738 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son Richard Cutler in the will of George Cutler, wife Arcadia.2 Richard was named in his brother's will on 24 April 1743 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as brother Richard Cutler in the will of Thomas Cutler, unmarried.3 He married Rosanna 'Rose' Fletcher, daughter of Brandon 'Brand' Fletcher and Jean (-----), circa 1745.4 Richard was named in his mother's will on 2 January 1749/50 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as son Richard Cutler in the will of Arcadia Cutler, widow.5 Richard was named in his uncle's will on 2 May 1767 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Richard Cutler, my kinsman (meaning nephew) in the will of William Cutler. He gave his son Samuel Cutler plantation where I now live near the New Church in the Parish of St. George, being 150 acres.6 Richard was named in his son's will on 11 September 1777 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as father Richard Cutlar in the will of Thomas Cutlar, wife Sarah..7 Richard was named in his son's will on 20 February 1786 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as father Richard Cutler in the will of John Cutler, wife Polly.8 Richard made a will on 2 July 1793 at Accomack Co, VA. To wife Rosanna Cutler whole estate during her life & then to my grandson Richard Cutler, son of John Cutler, all my lands, being 250 acres, upon the conditions hereafter named, said land adjcent George Hack, Peter Rodgers & William Colony, & should he offer to sell or mortgage the said land then to fall to the next male heir, to one George Cutler, he to pay to his 2 bros. & sister, George Cutler, Peter Cutler & Rosanna Cutler 20 L - each when they arrive at 28 years of age; should Richard Cutler die without issue then I give the said land to my grandson George Cutler, & if he offer to sell or mortgage the said lands then to fall to the next male heir, Peter Cutler, & should Peter offer to sell or mortgage the said lands or die without issus, I give the aforesaid land to my son Richard Cutler, the land not to be divided but fall to the male heir, & if no male heir then to the eldest female heir, & if there should be no male or female heir the said land to be kept for a free school for the poor people in this Neck.
