Mears Jr., son of Capt. Zadock S. Mears and Julia Ann Chesser, circa 1938.² On 4 Nov 1940 Mrs. Z.S. Mears (Nee Fannie Hazel ---) of Card Towing Lines Inc., 17 Batery Place, New York City, NY, wrote to the Supt' Home for Children, Holt Street, Norfolk, VA and asked for information trying to find out who her parents were. She stated that Vassie Bright, who was an inmate at the same time she was, being a little older then her, had told her the following: She was Fannie Hazel Rhodes, and was taken from the home by Frank Ailworth and his wife Nettie J. Ailworth of New Church, VA and they promised to adopt her, but didn't. Her then husband was a Captain on a Coastwise Barge and she was in the service and went with him at all times. But now the Government required Birth Certificates to prove they were American Citizens and she had none as was hoping to find information on who her parents were so that she could get a birth certificate. The on 13 Nov 1940 the Edgewater Home for Girls operated by the Female Orphan Society at 5505 Powhatan Avenue, Norfolk, VA replied to Mrs. Z.S. Mears that the only record that they had was that she entered The Orphanage in Sept 1900 and that the Holt Street Orphanage was sold in 1918 and they had been at 5505 Powhatan Ave since that time.² Fanny was living in 1947 at Baltimore, MD. Hannah Tull will be three years old this March (1947) and David Tull was four years old in December (1946). They are the children of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Tull Jr. of Saxis and the grandchildren of Mr. & Mrs. Charles S. Furniss of Saxis, Mr. Harry Tull of Grotons, and Mrs. Fanny Mears of Baltimore (Pen.      The proof that he was a son of William and Charlotte (Taylor) Knight is based on being survived by a sister, Mrs. Cullen. This was Elizabeth A. Knight (1854-1933), a known daughter of William and Charlotte Knight by Acc Co birth records, who married John S. Cullen in Worcester Co in 1873. His 1872 Acc Co marriage record shows him as the son of William & Sally Knight. William was born in 1850 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ He married Margaret M. 'Peggy' Cullen, daughter of Jacob Cullen and Sarah 'Sally' Milligan, on 1 February 1872 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA. He was a 22 year old merchant, shown as the son of William & Sally, and she was age 19. They were married by J. C. Reed..² William died on 4 September 1926. W. R. Knight died at his home at Belinda, aged 76 years and married for 55 years. He was survived by 4 daughters and 3 sons (all listed) and one sister, Mrs. Cullen.
