     Eleanor was born on 22 November 1925 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.¹ As of 12 July 1942,her married name was Hall.² She married Bernard Kater 'B.K.' Hall Jr., son of Bernard Kater Hall Sr. and Nellie May Hall, on 12 July 1942 at MD-VA Line, Beaver Dam, Worcester Co, MD.² According to the church records, Eleanor transferred to Sanford on 23 Apr 1950. Eleanor Virginia Lewis died on 4 May 2013 at Arcadia Nursing Center, Gargatha, Acc Co, VA, at age 87. Mrs. Eleanor Lewis Hall, 87, of Saxis Road, Sanford, Virginia passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Arcadia Nursing Center in Gargatha, VA. Born in Saxis on November 22, 1925 , she was the daughter of the late Elton Lewis and the late Beatrice Selby Lewis. She was married on July 5, 1942 to the late Bernard K. Hall, Jr. A loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, Mrs. Hall was an avid crafter, an extraordinary cook, one who liked to watch birds on her bird feeders, and loved car rides. She also enjoyed playing with her great-grandchildren, watching Christmas movies on t.v., shopping and gospel music. Mrs. Hall was a lifelong Methodist and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Hall is survived by a daughter, Pat Linton of Atlantic, VA, two sons, Kenneth Hall, Sr. of Nelsonia, VA and Rex Hall of Northeast, MD., nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Other than her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Hill who died January 4, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 7, at 2:00 pm from the Thornton Funeral Home in Parksley with the Rev. William Jefferson officiating. Interment will follow in the John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery in Temperanceville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. A reception will follow the burial at the Sanford United Methodist Church Social Hall.

Taylor Cemetery, Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA.⁶

     Roland was born on 7 April 1910 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ Roland was living in 1930 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA.² He married Violet Adonia Godwin, daughter of Arvandus Washington 'Captain Bob' Godwin Sr. and Sarah C. 'Sally' Martin, on 31 December 1930 at Pocomoke City, Worcester Co, MD.² He married Thelma Irene Parker, daughter of William Henry Clay Parker Sr. and Mary Elizabeth 'Bessie' Taylor, on 22 June 1946 at Pocomoke City, Worcester Co, MD.³ Roland died on 19 November 1984 at NAM Hospital, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA, at age 74.¹ His body was interred at Downing's Cem, Oak Hall, Acc Co, VA.⁴

     Miss Thelma Parker of Colonial Beach, VA, became the bride of Mr. Roland McCready of Sanford, VA, on 22 Jun 1946. They were married at Pocomoke City by Rev. George Pigueron. Mr. & Mrs. Luther Tyler of Hallwood were in attendance. The will reside in Sanford (Pen. Ent., 5 Jul 1946). Thelma Parker McCready, aged 71 years, wife of the late Roland Thomas McCready and a resident of Sanford for 50 years, died at Atlantic on Wednesday, 10 Aug 1994. Born and reared at Colonial Beach, VA, she was the daughter of the late Henry C. Parker Sr. and Becky Elizabeth Taylor Parker. She was a housewife and a member of the Sanford United Methodist Church. She was a member of O.E.S. #88 in Temperanceville. Funeral services will be held at Sanford United Methodist Church, today, 13 Aug 1994, conducted by the Rev. Robert Cooper and Rev. James Hassmer. Interment will be in Downings Cemetery, Oak Hall. Survivors were listed (E.S. News, 13 Aug 1994). Thelma was born on 27 November 1922 at Colonial Beach, Westmoreland Co, VA.² She married Roland Thomas McCready, son of Charlie G. McCready and Marion E. Mrs. Margie Hall Hill, 69, wife of Wayne Howard Hill and a resident of Sanford, VA, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2013 at her residence. Born September 22, 1943 in Saxis, VA, she was a daughter of Eleanor Virginia Lewis Hall of Sanford, and the late Bernard K. Hall, Jr. Margie was a former longtime bookkeeper and a homemaker; member of the Sanford United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for thirty-five years; was an avid crafter; and greatly enjoyed phone calls with close friends, and spending time on her computer. In addition to her loyal and devoted husband of fifty-one years, and her dear mother, survivors include a loving daughter, Robin Hill Lobus and her husband Mike of Toano, VA; a granddaughter, Chelsea Nicole Lobus; a sister, Patricia Hall Linton and her husband O’Neil of Atlantic, VA; two brothers, Kenneth Hall, Sr. and his wife Cathaleen of Bloxom, VA, and Rex Hall and his wife Ellen of Northeast, MD; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from the Sanford United Methodist Church on Monday, January 7, 2013, at 2:00 PM with the Reverends William Jefferson and Glenda Turlington officiating. Interment will follow in the John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery in Temperanceville, VA. There will be a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service.

     Augustus Martin is mentioned as a surviving brother of Edward Martin in 1938, of Jessie Thomas Martin in 1944 and of James Martin in 1950. Mr. John A. It was on this date that Robert A. Marshall, "of Saxis Island," wrote his will and left his home on Saxis and its furnishings to his wife Bettie A. Marshall and then to her son Carrol Mister. He married Naomi Franklin Spence, daughter of John Wesley Spence and Julia Bertha Stant, on 16 July 1913 at Somerset Co, MD.⁴ Carroll was living on 21 July 1917 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA, (Army Registration).⁵ Carroll died on 25 March 1925 at Tangier Sound, Acc Co, VA, at age 29.⁶ His body was interred at Ellis Cem, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² Carroll's will was probated in 1926 at Accomack Co, VA.⁷

She lived at Saxis for the past 25 years. Survivors were listed, including her mother, Mrs. Edward Evans Sr. and a brother, Edward Evans, both of Baltimore, and 4 unnamed sisters (Pen. Ent., 24 May 1956). Another obituary listed her as the daughter of Peter Marshall of Tylerton. Since her middle name in the Pen. Ent. obituary was Marshall, it is assumed that she was the daughter of Peter Marshall and that her mother married a second time to Edward Evans Sr. Sadie was born on 5 June 1911 at Tylerton, Smith Island, Som Co, MD.² She married (1h|o S.R. Marshall) (-----) circa 1930. Sadie was living after 1931 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.² She married Herman John Martin, son of James Thomas Martin and Mary W. "Will Griffin, who was a soldier in the Confederate Army, owned a little trunk which had a bullet hole in it from a Yankee rifle. The trunk was said to have saved his life. Kate later gave the trunk to her grandson, Earl K. Drewer Sr. After the war, Will was in the Foreign Service. He was with Embassies and traveled a lot. When he was off duty he spent a lot of time with John R. and Kate. He said his sister, Kate, was an angle and his brother, Neal, was a devil." William was born circa 1862.

     Neal was employed at as a Bank teller. The following was provided by Evelyn (Lewis) Powell. "Neal Griffin was a bank cashier in the Norfolk area and may have become the president of a bank. He moved to Florida after he retired." Neal was born circa 1864.

     According to the Peninsula Enterprise of 31 May 1884, John Dennis and Miss Olivia Marshall were married on Saxes' Island on Sunday, 18 May 1884. According to edition of 5 Jul 1884, they were married on 29 May 1884. Acc Co marriage records show the marriage as 20 Jun 1884. Olevia Dennis, aged 62 years and wife of John, died at home at Saxis on 20 Sep 1927. Funeral services were at the Methodist Church by Rev. Reynolds with interment at the family cemetery at Saxis. Survivors were listed (E.S. News, 23 Sep 1927). Mrs. Olivia Dennis of Saxis, VA, died on 20 Sep 1927, aged 62 years (Pen. Ent., 27 Sep 1962 - 35 years ago). She was shown as a Melissa E. Glenn, a 25 year old wife and house keeper, born in VA as were both of her parents, in HH#52 headed by W.H. French, a 33 year old wreck diver. Listed just above her was G.W. Glenn, a 25 year old merchant who was her husband.³ Melissa was on the in 1898 roll of the at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ Melissa E. (Lewis) Glenn, aged 68 and widowed, was living with her son "Hue" Glenn in 1920. Amelia Lewis, age 65 and single, listed as a cousin was also living with "Hue." Melissa died on 31 March 1921 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.⁵ Her body was interred at Norfolk, VA.⁶

     Permelia was born on 9 May 1855 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.¹ Permelia died before 1860.²

     Rebecca's first marriage record indicated that she was the daughter of Susan Drewer and was born in Baltimore, MD. This is consistent with the her brother's death certificate, which indicated that he was the son of John Drewer and Susan Simpson and was born in Baltimore, MD. In 1850, Rebecca, age 13, and her brother, John, age 9, were both living on Saxis with their step-father, William Russell, age 30, in the household (HH#793) of Gillet Marshall and his wife Henny. Also living in the household were William Russell, Jr., age 15, and two Marshall children, Samuel J., age 5 and Virginia E., age 2 months. In 1860 she was living on Saxis in the household (HH#378) of Severn P. Miles and his wife Hestor Ann. She was first married in 1861, but her husband, Severn James Crockett, Sr., evidently had died before the 1870 Census, because the 1870 Census showed her living on Saxis in the household (HH#384) of her brother John W. Drewer. Her daughter, Margaret A. Crockett, and her son, Severn J. Crockett, Jr, listed as "Levin," were both living with their grandfather, George Crockett, in 1870. Her second marriage was to William T. Crockett, her brother-in-law, in 1873, but evidently he had died by the 1880 Census, because Rebecca is listed as the head of a household (HH#326) and widowed. Her son Severn, age 16, an oysterman, was living with her. In the later part of her life she lived in the little house behind her son's home and general store on Saxis. Mrs. Rebecca Crockett, aged 65 years and widow of William Crockett, died Tuesday, 10 Jun 1902 at her home on Saxis of heart trouble (Pen. Ent., 14 Jun 1902). Although she died in 1902, she was not listed in the 1900 Census on Saxis and her grave is not marked by a tombstone. In an interview in the winter of 1977, Mrs. Lovie (Bonawell) Marshall (1891-1981), age 85 at the time of the interview and age 11 at the time of Rebecca's death, related the following about "Aunt Becky" to Kathryn (Drewer) Miles and her son M.K. "Aunt Becky didn't have it very good, I'll tell you. Her little house didn't have no upstairs to it and it just had cardboard inside. Didn't have no ceiling and it was papered with heavy cardboard inside. There never was one any better than she was. I loved her, I never knew the love of a grandmother, but I loved her like a grandmother, and she loved me. She taken to me and when she died I thought I would go crazy. I was round about, I guess, 12 years old. And I cried night and day, I snubbed myself to sleep. Mama would say sometimes, Lovie, I believe you loved Aunt Becky better than you did me. I said, Mom, no I don't. When I was up to Stella's, she was cooking, if it was fish or vegetable soup, she would always take mine out and put in that cupboard and look at me and nod her head. She's buried in the Ellis Cemetery. Now there may be a tomb there to her grave, I couldn't tell you that. As you go down that lane by Lena Glenn's, she's buried on this side, facing the outlet. But she was a beloved person by everybody." Rebecca was born circa 1837 at Baltimore, MD.¹ Rebecca was listed with another family in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. Crockett, son of George Crockett and Sinah D. Evans, on 24 May 1873 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William Crocket, a 25 year old oysterman, the son of George & Sina Crocket and she was shown as Rebecca Crocket, age 25 and widowed, the daughter of Susan Druer. They were married at Sykes Island by Montcalm Oldham..⁵ Rebecca reported a death on 19 November 1879 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. It was on this date that Rebecca Crockett reported the death of her husband, Wm. Crockett, who drowned at the age of 38 years..⁶ Rebecca died on 10 June 1902 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.⁷

He was listed as a farmer in all three Census, although most men on Saxis at that time were oystermen. He must have died before 1880, as he was not found in the 1880 Acc Co Census. George died circa 1875.

     The 1850 Census listed her as Sinai, as did her son's marriage record. However, the 1860 Census listed her as Sarah D. and listed her as the same age, 40, as she was in the 1850 Census. Her death record, 1862, listed her as Sinah. The cause of death was consumption. Sinah was born circa 1810 at Tangier Island, Acc Co, VA.² She married George Crockett, son of John Crockett Sr. and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Evans, on 21 January 1825 at Accomack Co, VA.      James was born circa 1885 at Somerset Co, MD.¹ James was living in 1913 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ He married Cassie A. Martin, daughter of Samuel Martin Sr. and Ella Florence Thomas, on 13 October 1913 at Mekemie Park, Acc Co, VA.¹

     Edwin was born circa 1892 at Somerset Co, MD.¹ He married Verndine Selby, daughter of John S. Selby and Mary Ellen L. Payne, on 26 October 1913 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.
