James Wessells Sr. was born in 1688 at Kent Co, DE. Since he was under age when his father Gerardus wrote his will in 1707 and was of age in 1709 when it was probated, he would have been born in 1688.2 The earliest reference in the records to James occurred in the Maryland Assembly Proceedings September 20-October 18,1694 "An Act for the Naturalization of…Gerardus Wessells and James his son….1 James was named in his father's will on 21 January 1706/7 at Kent Co, MD. He was shown as my son James Wessells in the will of Gerardus Wessells. He was given my now dwelling Plantation… one Seale gold Ring & one Silver Snuff box & also my wearing apparill. Gerardus named excutors William and James Harris in trust, suggesting that James was not yet 21 years of age.2 He married Elizabeth Tolley, daughter of Walter Tolley Sr., on 10 September 1707 at All Hallows Parish, Annarundel Co, MD.3 It was on this date that testamentary proceedings suggest that conflict exists between James and his sister, Ann over the disposition of Gerardu's estate. On that date, William Latimer, Ann's second husband, acting on her behalf said in court that "James has wasted the estate and is about to depart the province." This resulted in an attachment for James to render the accounts.4 James Wessells Sr. sold land on 9 March 1709 at Kent Co, MD. It was on this date that James Wessells, of KE Co. and his wife ELIZABETH conv. to Nathaniel Hynson part of a tract called Hinchingham formerly belonging to Walter (Tol)ley, Sr. and by him in his last will devised to his two daus. MARY & ELIZABETH. Which said Mary was dec'd and without issue and the same descended to the afsd. ELIZABETH."5 He sold land on 6 March 1710 at Kent Co, MD. It was on this date that James sold a 100 acre tract named Carola to John March, property formerly owned by his father Gerardus.6 James witnessed a will on 30 December 1712 at Accomack Co, VA.7 James witnessed a will in 1716 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that James Wessells, Sebastian Delastitus and John Morris, witnessed the will of Dennis Morris, wife Easter..8 He was on the personal property tax list between 1723 and 1734 at Annamessex, Som Co, MD. The tax records for Somerset County show James as present from 1723 through 1734. In 1730, 1733 and 1734 Ephriam Vessells is shown as a dependent in the home of James Vessells.9 James Wessells received a payment from the estate of Cornelius Ward of Somerset, County on December 28, 1725.10 Since there were no further records of James or his son Ephraim Wessells in Somerset County after 1734, it was probably in this year that he moved to Accomack County.11 James received land as a gift on 29 January 1750 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Edmund Linton deeded 50 acres of land to James Vessells for maintenance during his natural life. One of the witnesses was Ephraim Vessells. The land joined Mark Ewell. Then on 30 Jul 1753 James Wessells deeded it back to Edmund Linton thus discharging himself from the life maintenance of Edmund Linton. The land was that of Darby Linton dec'd adjacent to Mark Ewell and Col. Arbuckle. The deed was witnessed by Ephraim Wessells, James Wessells, Mark Ewell & William Andrews. (NOTE: There was no release of dower rights by a wife named Elizabeth, so she may have died by this date.).12 He made a will on 7 April 1751 at Fisher's Island, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James Vessels Sr. living on Fisher's Island. To son Ephraim Vessels 1 s. To son Shadrack 1 s. To son Elijah 1 s. To son James plantation & land where he now lives being 50 acres Bal. of estate to wife Elizabeth during her widow & then to my 3 daughters as my wife sees fit, viz: Keturah, Betty & Rebecca Vessels - To daughter Hannah 1 s. Wife & son James Exrs. Not witnessed..13 James died before 25 June 1754 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated. It was proved by James Vessels..
