     Violet was born circa 1925. She married Rudolph Valentino Linton, son of John Revell Linton and Alice Murrah Linton, circa 1945. Violet died before 1993.¹

     Watler was born on 14 November 1904 at Mearsville, Acc Co, VA. Watler died on 22 December 1955 at age 51.

     Mr. Carlton Byrd, son of Mr. & Mrs. Orris Byrd of Accomac, and Miss Virginia Powell, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Percy Powell of Wachapreague, were married at Pocomoke City, MD, on 27 May 1937 and are now residing at Keller with Mr. & Mrs. Preston Byrd (E.S. News, 18 Jun 1937). Carlton was born on 23 September 1918 at Belinda, Acc Co, VA.¹ Carlton was living in 1937 at Accomac, Acc Co, VA.² Carlton died on 25 August 1952 at age 33.¹

     Clarence was a member of the armed forces serving at US Army, WWII.² Mr. Clarence Alva Byrd Sr., aged 70 years, husband of Thelma Louise Byrd, died 1 Feb 1994. He was a resident of Ft. Myers, FL, for the last 15 years. He was born and reared in Keller and was a US Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were at Fox's in Temperanceville with interment in the Wessells Cemetery. Survivors included his wife, 3 children and 4 sisters, all of who were listed, and 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren (E.S. News, 9 Feb 1994). He first appeared as a head of household in the 1820 Census as Walter Vessells, age 26-45 (45), with a wife, age 26-45 (Polly, 34), 1 male 10-16 (Henry, 13), 2 males under 10 (Colmore, 9 and Solomon, 3), 3 females 0-10 (Sarah, 11, Elizabeth, 6, and Anne 3), and 7 slaves. Walter Wessels Sen, age 50-60 (55), was listed as a head of an 1830 household with a wife, age 40-50 (Polly, 44), 1 male 20-30 (Henry L., 23), 1 male 15-20 (Colmore, 19), 1 male under 5 (John Wm. Custis, 1), 2 females 15-20 (Sarah, 21 and Elizabeth, 16), 1 female 10-15 (Anne, 13), and 7 slaves. Walter was born circa 1775 at Accomack Co, VA.² He married Mary 'Polly' Boston, daughter of Solomon (184) Boston and Elizabeth Litchfield(?), on 4 February 1807 at Accomack Co, VA. William Ailworth was the security on the M.L.B. of Walter Wessells and Mary Boston..^3,4 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1830 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.² He made a will on 16 October 1833 at Accomack Co, VA. He named sons: Colmore (land near John Drummond and James Northam), Henry, and William Custis Wessells (Messongo Creek land); and daughters: Elizabeth and Anne Wessells. He also specified: "If the said Wm. Custis Wessells dieing without lawful heirs of his body for Colmore Wessells for (to) have (negro] Samuel and Henry Wessells for to have one third and Elizabeth Wessells one third and Anne Wessells my daughters one third of the balance." Witnesses were Hny. Fletcher, Colmore S. Bird, and Custis W. Bird. In the probation protion Walter is called "Senr" and in the seal. Since no executor was named, on the oath of Polly Wessells (assumed to be the wife) and Henry Wessells who took the oath prescribed by law, and together with William Nock, John P. Drummond and Custis W. Bird securities thereto entered into a bond and letters of administration were granted to them. [WHAT ABOUT POLLY FROM PRAYER BOOK? DIED YOUNG OR HH#694 IN 1850 CENSUS? NO MENTIONED IN FATHER'S WILL!].⁵ Walter died on 30 March 1837 at Accomack Co, VA.⁶ Walter's will was probated on 29 May 1837 at Accomack Co, VA.⁷

     William Wessells Senr's will, written 12 Dec 1841, named a wife Sally Wessells as the executor and a friend William Taylor of Teackle. Witnesses were Littleton A. Hinman, John Taylor of C. and Teackle Taylor. It is odd that neither William Wessells nor his wife Sally named any children nor grand children in their wills. William was born circa 1774 at Accomack Co, VA.² He married Sally Killmon, daughter of Mathew 'Marthey' Killmon and Comfort Ewell, on 30 December 1799 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown only as William Vessels and she as Sally Killmon. No other information was given..^3,4 William was named in his father's will on 22 February 1801 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son William Vessels in the will of James Vessels, wife Patience. He was given the plantation where he now lives..⁵ William's will was probated on 25 April 1842 at Accomack Co, VA.⁶ William died in 1842 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.⁶

     Mary was born on 3 February 1786 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.² She married Walter Wessells Sr., son of William Wessells Sr. and Egnatia 'Nasha' (-----), on 4 February 1807 at Accomack Co, VA. William Ailworth was the security on the M.L.B. of Walter Wessells and Mary Boston..^3,4 Mary died on 7 February 1838 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA, at age 52.²

     Henry was born circa 1620. Henry immigrated to circa 1640. He married Anne (-----) circa 1655 at Northampton Co, VA.¹ Henry died on 24 September 1676 at Annamessex, Som Co, MD.

     Anne was born circa 1620. She married Henry Boston circa 1655 at Northampton Co, VA.¹

     Her common name was Nancy. Ann was born on 6 April 1772 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.² She married James Small circa 1799 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ Ann was named in her sister's will on 7 November 1846 at Accomack Co, VA. She was named as a sister Ann Boston in the will of Betsy Watts. (Note: She should have been Ann Small.).³ Ann's will was probated on 31 May 1847 at Accomack Co, VA.⁴ Ann died in 1847 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.¹

She married John Burton on 7 January 1824 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ Elizabeth was listed with her son in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Elizabeth Burton, age 50 in HH#950 headed by Wm. S. Burton, a 23 year old farmer..² Elizabeth died circa 1870.

     John was born circa 1800. He married Elizabeth Small, daughter of James Small and Ann 'Nancy' Boston, on 7 January 1824 at Accomack Co, VA.¹

     Sally was born on 15 January 1768 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.² She married Isaac Warner, son of William Warner, circa 1787.¹ Sally died circa 1801.

     Isaac was born circa 1760 at Accomack Co, VA. He married Sophia Staton, daughter of Warrington Staton and Catharine Crippen, circa 1780.² He married Sally Boston, daughter of Solomon (184) Boston and Elizabeth Litchfield(?), circa 1787.³ Isaac died in January 1800 at Accomack Co, VA.⁴ Administration of Isaac's estate was filed on 27 January 1800 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Zadock Nock was named to settle the estate of Isaac Warner. James Abbott and Benjamin Nock were securities.⁴

     William was born circa 1734 at Accomack Co, VA. He was security on the administration of an estate on 27 March 1764 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of William Bell was granted to Bridget Bell with John Northam & William Warner securities.¹ William was named in his mother's will on 29 May 1768 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son William Warner in the numc. will of Christian Hickmon..² He married Elizabeth (-----) circa 1785.³ He made a will on 20 June 1803 at Accomack Co, VA.³ William died in June 1803.³ William's will was probated on 25 June 1803 at Accomack Co, VA.^4,3

     Lewis was born circa 1865. He married Mary E.W. 'Mollie' Wessells, daughter of John William Custis Wessells and Cordelia Taylor, circa 1900.¹

     Mr. J.H. Wessells, aged 77 years, died at Grotons on 2 Jun 1936. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fulcher & Wilmer at Downing Church with burial in Downing's Cemetery. Survivors included a wife, 1 daughter, 3 sons and 1 sister, all of who were listed (E.S. News, 5 Jun 1936). John was born on 18 May 1859 at Wessells Farm, Messongo Cr, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.² He married Elizabeth M. Gaskins, daughter of John Selby Gaskins Sr. and Letitia Romalina Broadwater, circa 1882.¹ John died on 30 May 1936 at Gaskins Farm, Holden Cr, Acc Co, VA, at age 77.¹ His body was interred at Downing's Cem, Oak Hall, Acc Co, VA.³ Conflicting evidence states that he died on 2 June 1936 at Grotons, Acc Co, VA.⁴

     Mrs. Elizabeth M. (Gaskins) Wessells, widow of the late J.H.S. Wessells, died at Grotons on 4 Jul 1940, aged 77 years, survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 12 Jul 1940). Conflicting evidence states that Elizabeth was born in 1861.² Elizabeth was born on 9 December 1863 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ She married John H. Selby Wessells, son of John William Custis Wessells and Cordelia Taylor, circa 1882.¹ Elizabeth died on 4 July 1940 at Grotons, Acc Co, VA, at age 76.³ Her body was interred at Downing's Cem, Oak Hall, Acc Co, VA.²

     Sally was born circa 1774 at Accomack Co, VA. The 1850 census puts her birth at 1790 and the 1860 census puts it at 1774..^2,3 She married William Wessells Sr., son of James Wessells Sr. and Patience Young, on 30 December 1799 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown only as William Vessels and she as Sally Killmon. No other information was given..^4,5 Sally was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Sally Wessells the head of HH#1195, age 60 with real estate valued at $400. Listed with her was Luiretia Russell, age 50 with real estate valued at $150..³ Sally was listed with her brother in the census of 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Sally Wessels, age 86, in the household of Charles Killman, age 78.² She made a will on 28 May 1862 at Accomack Co, VA. To William Taylor (of T.) and he to pay to Margaret Parkes (w/o Sol Parkes) $500; to Samuel C. Taylor (of John) and Charles Parkes (of John) land between Patsey Wessells and John Parkes; to Emeline Killmon (w/o Samuel Killmon); to Margaret Taylor (d/o John Taylor); to Margaret Parks (w/o Solomon Parks); to Catherine Taylor (wid/o John Taylor) and Margaret Parks (w/o Sol. Parks); to Tekle Taylor Senr. The executor was Burwell B. Ewell. Witnesses were Ephraim Wessells and John Parks Sr. (Acc Co Wills, 1846-1882, p. 342). Her relationship to those named was not specified.. Sally died before 30 June 1862. It was on this date that her will was probated. Securities for probate were John Parks Sr. and Dennis Clayton..⁶

Hetty was born circa 1800 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.² Hetty was listed with another family in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Hetty Wessells, age 50 in HH#987 headed by Alfred Northam, a 26 year old merchant with real estate valued at $2,000. Also listed was Alfred Andrews, a 30 year old laborer..² Hetty died on 15 March 1859 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Hetty Wessells, who died at the age of 58 years (the cause was not shown). She was the daughter of Wm. Wessells, born in Messongo and a spinster. Her cousin Henry L. Wessells gave the information..³

     Walter was born circa 1802 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.² He married Elizabeth 'Betsy' Bayly, daughter of Robert Bayly and Nancy (-----), on 24 February 1823 at Accomack Co, VA. Jacob Bird was the security on the M.L.B. of Walter Wessells Jr. and Betsy Bailey, orphan of Robert. They were married on 6 Mar 1823..³ Walter was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1840 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. Henrietta was born circa 1804 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.² She married Henry Bayly circa 1830.³ Henrietta was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1830 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She is shown as Henrietta Bayly, age 20-30. There were no other females listed with her. There were two males age 0-5..⁴ Henrietta was named as an heir on 27 July 1835 at Accomack Co, VA. Hetty Trader, Robert Bayly, Henny Bayly, Nancy Bayly, Polly Bayly and Betsy Bayly are the only heirs at law of Robert Bayly who was a seaman in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War..⁵ Henrietta was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1840 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Henny Bayly, age 30-40. Listed with her were 1 male age 0-5, 2 males age 5-10, 1 male age 10-15, 1 female age 0-5 and 1 female age 20-30. (Note: Jody Powell shows the head of the household as Henry, but Mary Frances Carey shows Henny. It must have been a female, because the oldest male was only age 10-15 and the oldest female was age 30-40.).⁶ Henrietta was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. On 29 May 1834 it was certified that Elijah Bayly son of Robert Bayly who was a seaman in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War is dead. On 25 Jul 1835 it was certified that Hetty Trader, Robert Bayly, Henny Bayly, Nancy Bayly, Polly Bayly and Betsy Bayly are the only heirs at law of Robert Bayly who was a seaman in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War. On 31 Oct 1836 it was certified that Robert Bayly is the grandson and only heir at Law of Robert Bayly, a seaman in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War. On 28 Feb 1853 it was certified that Hetty Trader one of the heirs of Robert Bayly is now the wife of Henry Davis. Robert and Henry (probably Henny) Bayly are still living, Polly is dead and intestate and without issue, Betsy Bayly and Betsy Wessells are still living. On 29 Jan 1855 it was certified that Nancy Bayly, widow of Robert Bayly, a reputed soldier in the Revolutionary War, died in August 1846, and that Elizabeth Wessells is her only living child..³ Robert sold land on 10 December 1808 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Bayly and wife Nancy sold Frank Jenkins 9 acres of land on Messongo Road for 22 pounds. Witnesses were Bennet Mason, James Duncan and Sarah Fisher..⁴ Robert sold land on 23 January 1812 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Bayly of Robert sold John Wharton, a mortgage for $59.57. The land had been purchased of Henry Thornton as was called Chesnut Hill. It was southwest of Wallops Road, near the land of Wm. T. Matthews Jr, where Robert Bayly now lives..⁵ He made a will on 21 March 1815 at Accomack Co, VA. To son John Bayly 20 acres of land adjoining Nanny Small, Frank Jenkins & Elijah Lucas. To son James Bayly 12 acres of land adjoining Henry Trader & Nanny Small. To son Elijah Bayly all the remaining land during his life & then to his son Robert Bayly with him paying my daughter Betsy Bayly $50 within five years of my death. All of my land & all my personal estate to my wife Nancy Bayly during her life & at her death or marriage my personal estate to my daughter Betsy Bayly & granddaughter Hetty Trader.      Evidently Nancy Wessells' husband, Daniel Kelly, must have died shortly after their marriage in 1846 as a Nancy Kelly (b.c. 1824) was living in the 1850 and 1860 household of James D. Byrd and family. Nancy was born circa 1824 at Mearsville, Acc Co, VA.² She married Daniel Kelly, son of Jessie Kelly and Anna Woods, on 4 September 1846 at Accomack Co, VA.³ Nancy was listed with her sister in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Nancy Kelly, age 26 in HH#1049 headed by James D. Bird, a 26 year old tailor with real estate valued at $150.      Eveline was born on 30 November 1839 at Mearsville, Acc Co, VA.² Eveline was listed with her parents in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Eveline Wessells, age 10 in HH#978 headed by Walter Wessells, a 48 year old farmer..¹ She married Capt. George T. Somers Sr., son of John Somers and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Wessells, on 14 January 1856 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as George Summers, no parents shown, and she was shown as Eveline Wessells, daughter of Betsy Wessells who gave consent. John W. Bird says he was over age 21..³ Eveline died on 17 January 1917 at Mearsville, Acc Co, VA, at age 77. Mrs. Eveline Somers, widow of George Somers, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.F. Marshall, Mearsville, on 17 Jan 1917, aged 77 years, 1 month and 17 days. The service was conducted by Rev. R.S. Monds and she was buried in the family plot at Muddy Creek, survivors were listed (Acc News, 26 Jan 1917). Evidently she was moved as she is now in Parksley Cemetery..² Her body was interred at Parksley Cem, Acc Co, VA.⁴

     Henry was born on 13 July 1844 at Mearsville, Acc Co, VA.² Henry was listed with his parents in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Henry W. Wessells, age 7 in HH#978 headed by Walter Wessells, a 48 year old farmer..¹ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.³ He married Verneta A. Chase, daughter of Robert J. Chase Jr. and Nancy Lewis, circa 1866.² Henry died on 15 June 1933 at age 88. Capt. Henry W. Wessells, aged 89 years of Mearsville, died at home of grand-daughter, Mrs. Norman Fisher. Rev. Wilmer and Price conducted the funeral and burial was in Wessells Cemetery. Survivors included one daugher and two sons, both of who were listed (E.S. News, 16 Jun 1933)..² His body was interred at Wessells Cem, Mears, Acc Co, VA.⁴

He could have been named Henry Thomas Bayly, Thomas Henry Bayly, or the 2 boys had different fathers. Edward's mother's madien name was shown as Henrietta Bailey on his death certificate and William's mother was shown as Hennie on his marriage record. Edward's obituary showed he was survived by a brother William. Although his death certificate shows he was born in MD, his 1868 marriage record shows he was born in Acc Co, VA..^3,4 William was listed with his mother in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William Bayly, age 3, in HH#979 headed by Henny Bayly, age 46..¹ William was listed with another family in the census of in 1860 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William Bailey, age 14 in HH#628 headed by William Gardner, age 55 and his wife Sally Gardner, age 49. (Note: These were the parents of William's brother Edward's wife Lovy Gardner. His brother Edward and wife Lovy were in HH#644.).⁵ William was a soilder in the Civil War circa 1864. William Bailey personally appeared before Foster F.V. Staples, a Notary Public, as deposed as follows: That he is unable to furnish a verified copy of the public, church or family record of his birth, for the reason that at the time of his birth, no such records were kept in Accomac County, Virginia, his birth was never recorded in any church, and his family being in reduced circumstances, there was no family record kept; that his knowledge of the date of his birth was received from his mother's sister, Mrs. Betsy Wessels, who was present at his birth and who lived for many years afterwards, and the date as given by his said aunt, who is now dead, was regarded by all the members of his family as correct; that all of the members of his family who were living at his birth, are now dead. (Note: This document did not actually give his birth date, but did prove that his mother was a sister of Mrs. Betsey Wessels, who was Betsy Bayly, orphan of Robert, and married Walter Wessells on 6 Mar 1823. Therefore, William Bailey's mother would have been Betsy Bayly's sister Hennie Bayly, also a daughter of Robert Bayly.).² William was named in his brother's obituary on 6 January 1914 at Portsmouth, Norfolk Co, VA. He was named as a brother Mr. William Bailey in the obituary of Edward Bailey..⁸ William died on 25 February 1931 at Portsmouth, VA, at age 84. His death certificate shows that he died at his residence at 1927 Holladay St., Portmouth, Norfolk Co, VA. He was retired from the Navy Yard. His birth place was shown as MD.
