Savage Corbin (of Ralph) was listed in the 1800 Census as age 26-45 (b.c. 1755-1775) with a wife of the same age, 3 sons under 10, 1 duaghter under 10, 2 free negros and 1 slave. In 1810 he was again listed as age 26-45 (b.c. 1765-1785) with a wife of the same age, 3 sons under 10, 1 son 10-16, 1 daughter under 10, 1 daughter 10-16, and 1 other (probably a free negro). In 1820 he was over 45 (b. before 1775) with a wife of the same age, 1 son 10-16, 1 son 16-18, 1 son 16-26, 1 daughter 10-16, 1 daughter 16-18, and no free negros or slaves. He was not listed in the 1830 Acc Census. Based on the above he would have had to have been born between 1765 and 1775, thus a b.c. 1770 was selected. The 4 sons and 2 daughters shown below are based on the above census data. In 1810 Savage Corbin and his wife Polly sold 22 acres of A148 (just west of Hallwood) to his brother Ralph Corbin and two years later 20 acres more (Whitelaw, p. 1267). Whitelaw's assumption that this Ralph was Savage's brother is apparently incorrect. Savage did have a brother Ralph named in thier father's will, but as Whitelaw goes on to state that Ralph left it to his wife Betsey and their unnamed children in 1815 disproves that they were brothers, for the Ralph that died in 1815 with a wife Betsey (she was Elizabeth Dennis) was Rev. Ralph Broadwater Corbin the son of George Bonewell Corbin and Sarah Broadwater. Savage was born circa 1770.2 He married Mary (Polly?) (-----) circa 1790.3 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1800 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.2 He married Nancy (-----) circa 1800.4 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1810 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.2 Savage was the security on a M.L.B. On 30 May 1814 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Savage Corbin and William L. Lucas were the securities on the M.L.B. of Shadrack D. Marshall and Mahala Evans..5 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1820 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.2

Edward was born circa 1725 at Cessford, Scotland.1 He married Margaret (128) Shepherd, daughter of John Shepherd and Catherine (48) Harmanson, circa 1753 at Accomack Co, VA.2,1 Edward bought land in 1755 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Edward Ker and wife Margaret bought her sister's interest in 350 acres of Whitelaw's tract A26, near Pungoteague, from John Harmanson and his wife Elizabeth. In 1790 Edward Ker left his home plantation to his wife Margaret and then to their son George. George later died intestate and in 1824 John Ker of Northampton deeded his interest in the land to his sister Margaret S. Ker, saying they had inherited jointly upon the death of their father, the Reverend George Ker. Later in that year Margaret married the Reverend Samuel C. Stratton. In 1852, after the death of his wife, Stratton had moved to Cloucester Co, NJ, and in this year he and his children James and Mary sold as 300 acres to Richard J. Ayres. He later died intestate and in 1880 a son of the same name bought the property at a sale to settle the estate. The north part of the 350 acres became detached and thereafter was known as Edgewater. The Stratton deed called the property Shepherd's Plain, which was later changed to Melrose, but the older name is still in use. The original Shepherd house was about 200 yards northeat of the present dwelling and within the memory of those still living (Whitelaw published in 1951) the remains of an eight-foot cellar could be seen. The existing house appears to date from soon after 1755, when Edward Ker and his wife Margaret became possessed of the full title. (Note: See Whitelaw p. 665-667 for pictures and a full description.) The old graveyard of the first Kers (since plowed up) was on a little hill across the cove from the house..2 Edward estate was settled on 1 September 1762 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Edward Ker quaified to settle the estate of William Justice Jr. William left his whole estate to his wife, but if she should be with child the child to have all my lands & an equal part of my negroes & other estate. Witt: John Harmanson, Sarah Mackmath..3 He made a will on 17 May 1786 at Accomack Co, VA. To wife plantation where I live containing 550 acres for life & then to my son George. To son George plantation bought of Thomas H. Parker, containing 175 acres. Tatham. To son Edward all the land I now hold or may die possessed of in the County of Northampton, & the lands in Accomack bought of John & Littleton Harmon & Edmund Polson. To 3 daughters Jean Scarbrough, Catharine Christian & Ann Revell the lands 1 hold in Gloucestor, containing 243 1/4 acres. In lieu of the lands bought of John & Littleton Harmon & Edmund Polson, I give to my son Edward Ker the land & plantation bought of Michael Rickets Tatham on the North side of Andua. To son John Sheppard the remainder of the land purchased of John Cox, being about 98 acres and 13 acres lying below the main road purchased of James Broughton. Daughter Margaret to have her board with either of my sons she may incline to live with, & should she choose to board elsewhere I bequeath her 12 £ per annum while she remains single to be paid by my 4 sons, 3 £ each. He gave that property to his son John and moved to upper Accomack County where he bought land on the seaside of the peninsula, across the inlet from Wallops Beach, and in 1746 bought 300 acres at Pigg Point on the Pocomoke River. His Accomack County seaside home was left to his son George and in 1812 was sold by a grandson, George Thomas, to John Wharton. It became known as Mount Wharton. The older part of the house at Mount Wharton is believed to have been build by George Thomas..2 He made a will on 25 January 1772 at Accomack Co, VA. To son John Thomas plantation where he lives that I bought of Jonathan More, containing 150 acres, also 100 acres purchased of Jonathan Edmonds. To Ralph Corbin and Sarah his wife the effects and money they have had of me in my lifetime to be accounted for in the division of the estate as a part of their equal division. To Jedday Tunnell and Anne his wife, they to account for the effects they have already had. Should my daughter Anne, wife of said Tunnell, die before her husband, the above negroes to be divided among her children. To daughter Rosannah. Wife Bridget to live with my son George, she to have her equal division of the estate and after her death to be divided among our children, George, Levin, Sarah, Anne and Rosannah. Executors: Wife and sons George and Levin. Witt: Jonathan Powell, Sarah Powell, William Fraser Ross..3 George died before 24 November 1772 at Accomack Co, VA.3 George estate was settled circa 1773. The inventory of his personal estate, with an appraised value of 1,169£ included, among other items, 1 large walnut oval table, 11 black chairs, 1 walnut case of drawers, 1 small walnut oval table, 1 large walnut desk, 1 smaller walnut desk, 1 small desk, 1 looking glass, 2 Delph punch bowls, 1 Delph dish, 12 Delph plates, 1 Delph bowl, many pewter dishes and bowls, many earthen ware dishes and bowls, brass candlestick, copper coffee pot, 1 Bible and prayer book, seven books, 2 sail boats, 1 canoe, 1 punt, 1 fishing boat, money scales, 45 hogs, 4 bulls, 22 cows, 2 steers, 5 heads of cattle, 4 mares, 2 old horses, 7 yokes oxen, tools of all kinds, many bushels of corn, wheat, peas, beans, bags of meal and sacks of oats, and 1,946 pounds of tobacco. Unless requested that there was to be no appraisal, most estates in the county were appraised. There was no sale of the personal estate, but when there was such a sale, the price paid for necessary articles was frequently higher then the appraised value, while nice China and other choice articles went for a lower price, unless they were bought by a member of the family, when they frequently sold for more then the appraised valued..4

James S. Corbin first appeared as a head of household in the 1840 Census, age 30-40 (b.c. 1805) with a wife of the same age and a white male age 10-15 (b.c. 1825-1830) which could have been the son of his wife Mary by her first marriage. He age was given as 48 in the 1850 Census. 30 Aug 1831: "It is ordered to be certified that it appears to the Court by satisfactory evidence that James S. Corbin, Mary Jane Corbin and Sarah Ann Corbin are the only heirs at law of George Stewart who was Muster Master, paymaster and purchasing commissary to the Accomack and Diligence Galleys in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War" (Acc Orders 1829-1832, p. 362). 27 Aug 1849: "George Stewart, decd., who was a Muster-master, a pay master, and a Commissary General in the Virginia State Navy in the War of the Revolution" Administration on his estate to James S. Corbin (Acc Orders 1848-1851, p. 170). 23 Feb 1852: "It is ordered to be certified that it appears to the Court by satisfactory evidence that James S. Corbin, Mary Jane Taylor, formerly Mary Jane Corbin and Sarah Ann Metz, formerly Sarah Ann Corbin, are the only heirs at law of George Stewart who was a muster master, pay master and purchasing comissary to the Accomac Dilligence Galleys in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War. And it is further certified that it appears that the said George Steward died intestate" (Acc Orders, 1851-1854, p. 163). There are several possible explainations for these entries. James Stewart Corbin's mother, Mary Stewart, could have had a brother, George Stewart, an uncle George Stewart, or perhaps her father was George Stewart instead of James as show above. James was born circa 1802 at Accomack Co, VA.2 He married Mary Watson, daughter of Ephriam Watson and Tabitha (234) Wharton, 28 Oct 1830 (bond) at Accomack Co, VA.3 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1840 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.4 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James S. Corbin the head of HH#599, a 48 year old teacher with real estate valued at $500. Listed with him were Mary Corbin, age 48; John W. Adair, a 22 year old shoemaker; and Sophia Wharton, age 18 and black..2 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.5

Henry Dryden was appointed guardian of Eleanor's 3 daughter by her first husband Joshua T. Donahoe in Dec 1837 in Worcester Co, MD. On 3 Aug 1839 Henry and Eleanor Dryden conveyed to Mary Corbin [HER MOTHER OR STEP-MOTHER?] all her right of dower in the land of John Corbin (Eleanor's father) sold by Joshua Donahoe. Henry purchased the tract Ireland from Robert H. Corbin and partially paid for it. In May 1851 Henry and Eleanor sold Eleanor's dower right in the estate of Joshua Donahoe to Wheatley D. Barnes. Between 1860 and 1870 Henry and Eleanor moved to Newtown (Pocomoke City) where he worked as a tinsmith. He kept the Union Hotel for a time during the Civil War, being accused of smuggling supplies to the Confederates by way of Baltimore to the Washington House in Princess Anne and from Pocomoke City to Virginia. There is no doubt of his Confederate sympathies (Dryden Family Book I, pp. 134-135). Henry was born on 25 April 1815 at Worcester Co, MD.1 He married Eleanor T. Corbin, daughter of John Corbin and Mary 'Molly' Stockley, on 29 August 1837 at Worcester Co, MD.2 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1850 at Dublin Dist, Somerset Co, MD.3 Henry died on 25 May 1891 at Pocomoke City, Worcester Co, MD, at age 76.1 His body was interred at St Marys PE Cem, Pocomoke City, Worcester Co, MD.1
