William was born on 26 December 1820 at Accomack Co, VA.2 He was the son of Walter Robinson Finney and Sally Arlington. William was named in his uncle's will on 26 March 1849 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as nephew William W. Finney, son of Walter R. dec'd, in the will of John Arlington. He was given the plantation whereon I now reside upon the condition that he pay unto his sister Euphamy E. Finney $70 annually so long as she shall live & that he shall have his name legally changed from William W. Finney to John Arlington & the reason is because I am the last one of the family of that name, but in case he dies before his name is legally changed from Finney to Arlington or without issue, then the land shall return to my estate & go as the balance goes. (NOTE: He did change his name as requested in this will.).3 William was listed with another family in the cenus of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Wm. W. Finney, age 22 in HH#70 headed by John Arlington, a 49 year old farmer with real estate valued at $9,125, who was evidently his uncle..4 He married Mary Susan Bull on 13 December 1853 at Accomack Co, VA. They were shown as John Arlington and Mary Susan Bull of Thomas S. Bull..5 William was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1860 at Onancock P.O., St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as John Arlington the head of HH#792, age 33 with no occupation shown. His personal property was valued at $1,500. Listed with him were Mary S. Arlington, age 30 and Sally A.R. Arlington, age 4. (NOTE: In order to inherit his uncle John Arlington's plantation, William W. Finney changed his name to John Arlington.).6 William died on 28 October 1887 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA, at age 66. His tombstone shows him as John Arlington, 26 Dec 1820 - 28 Oct 1887. (NOTE: Mihalyka's tombstone book shows that he was born Wm. W. Finney.) The Accomack Death Register shows him as John Arlington, who died 28 Oct 1887 of kidney disease at the age of 61 years (which puts his birth at 1826, a closer match to the 1850 census). He was the son of (-----) & Sallie, born in Acc Co, a farmer and the husband of Mary S. Arlington, who gave the information. (NOTE: Sallie Arlington married Walter R. Finney, who were his birth parents. Evidently he did change his name to Arlington to inherit his uncle, John Arlington's plantation.).2,7 His body was interred at Arlington Plot, Mt. Nebo Neck, Slutkill Nk, Acc Co, VA. His tombstone shows him as John Arlington, 26 Dec 1820 - 28 Oct 1887. (NOTE: Mihalyka added a note that he was born William W. Finney.).2
