It is assumed that his father died about 1839, right after William's birth, since his mother Cretty was listed as the head of family in the 1840 Acc Census and she was shown as the widow of William on her marriage to John S. Onley (also widowed) in 1843. William was born circa 1839 at Accomack Co, VA.2 He was the son of William McCready Jr. and Lucretia 'Cretty' Hinman. William was listed with another family in the cenus of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Wm. H. McCready, age 11 in HH#1021 headed by James Bull, a 29 year old farmer. His mother Cretty and her then husband John S. Onley are listed in the 1850 Acc Census (HH#1003), which was near HH#1021, with two sons: James A. (7) and Smith K. (7). It is unclear as to why her son William was not living with her. He has not been found in the Acc Co 1860 Census..3 He married Susan G. Marshall on 2 October 1863 at Somerset Co, MD. He was shown as William Henry McCready and she as Susan G. Marshall..4 William was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1870 at Atlantic Dist, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William McCready the head of HH#AT580, a 31 year old oysterman. Morgan, age 18 and born in Somerset Co, MD and living in Acc Co, VA, the daughter Thos. W. & Harriet H. Morgan. They were married by John E. Bundick..1 William died on 24 April 1903 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA. Mr. William McCready, age 68, died of pneumonia at his home in Sanford on Friday 24 Apr 1903, after an illness of four days. Too much cannot be said in praise of him. He was not rich in this world's goods, but was a man of such lofty integrity, that his word was always as good as his bond. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.L. Carson at his late home on Sunday, 26 Apr. His wife and 11 children survived him (Pen. Ent., 2 May 1903). He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Drummond Cem at Flagpond Road in Sanford next to his second wife Annie Morgan.
