He was orphaned at 14 to grow up to be an orderly, competent, intelligent man, a general contractor and property owner, a man of means, who proved soon after arriving in Cameron in 1867 that he could take care of family responsibilities. He became guardian of young Tommy and Sallie Phillips, two children left alone. Both their parents had died, then their big brother, Zack, who had been taking care of them, passed on leaving them and Zack's young wife on their own. S. J. Slocomb stepped into the breach ca. 1871. On January 5, 1872, Slocomb married Zack Phillips' young widow, Nancy S. Smith, and our family line was established in Milam County, Texas. He was born the second child of Walter Slocomb and his wife Rebecca Bowles, in Accomack County, Virginia. He left for the Territory of New Mexico (Arizona section) to work as a carpenter in the copper and silver mines of Granville Oury before the Civil War. Then in 1861 he enlisted in Oury's Company, Company B, Herbert's Battalion, Arizona Cavalry, CSA, but that unit was disbanded by May 1863. Our ancestor joined another CSA unit operating in Louisiana, the location where Oury's Company last served. Apparently he stayed in Louisiana or thereabouts the remainder of the war as his parole was when he was turned loose as a prisoner of war by the United States June 7, 1865. He doubtless rode in his unit as a cavalryman, yet he learned to build bridges during the war. He could have served in an engineers' unit. The story has come down that he admitted killing seven men, that it was a terrible thing to kill a man, that he would never do it again. As a member of Capt. W. B. Ratliff's company, Slocomb participated in running down jayhawkers, mainly criminals preying on civilians in Louisiana. Another dangerous task, this in Point Coupee Parish. He was released as a U.S. prisoner of war (the South lost, so all Confederate military men were automatically prisoners of war) in 1865 and he doesn't appear in Cameron until about 1867, so where was he? Family tradition holds that he came to Cameron en route to Mexico to mine silver. Could this story have been turned around, and in fact it reflects something of his earlier mining days in Territory of New Mexico? After the Civil War he could have gone back to Virginia for a while, because his son, S.J., Jr., and daughter, Mary Ann, were living there with his brother and wife, John William and Ara Jane Mason Slocomb. Descendants of John William have lived on the Eastern Shore for scores of years and some are still there. His first wife was Elizabeth Mason of Worchester County, Maryland. They married April 22, 1850. Elizabeth died during the 1850s. John William and Ara Jane took their children to raise while S. J. Slocomb headed west to seek his fortune. From the beginning in 1867 people in Milam County called him Captain Slocomb. 1870s, '80s, and '90s documents were made out to Capt. S. J. Slocomb, but no signature by our ancestor ever uses the title. Nothing I've seen suggests he held military title of "Captain," although that's sometimes assumed because he served in the CSA army. There was a Captain Samuel Slocomb in Massachusetts in the mid-1700s, well before our Samuel Slocomb was born. That Captain Slocomb was a school teacher. One hundred and fifty years ago and farther back, civilian men were accorded miliary titles by local citizens in recognition of their standing in the community, thus a man of grand property might be "Colonel" or "General." Simply S.J. Slocomb, that's how he always signed his name, until his eldest son, Samuel James Slocomb, Jr., came to Cameron, then he changed his signature to S.J. Slocomb, Sr. About 40 years ago, my dad, a Slocomb grandson, gave me S.J. Slocomb documents spanning nearly 40 years 1858-1898. Our ancestor always spelled his name with a b, "Slocomb." Captain Slocomb and Nancy became the parents of Ethel Rebecca (1873), Guy V. (Vashti or Vernon, 1875) B (no period, 1878), Moxie Lavinia (187_?), Walter Thomas (1882-1889), and Donnton (later changed to Don, 1887). S. J. Slocomb was 17 years older than his wife Nancy who outlived him by 30 years. Samuel was born on 3 January 1828 at Accomack Co, VA.3 He was the son of Walter Slocomb and Rebecca Bowles. Samuel was named in his grandmother's will on 24 December 1842 at Accomack Co, VA. He was named as a grandson Samuel Slocomb and given $100 in the will of Lavinia Slocomb..4 Samuel was named in his mother's will on 26 February 1847 at Accomack Co, VA.
