Jeremiah Mason and his wife Ann sold 3 acres of the land he bought in 1780 to Major Mason on 3 January 1800 (Deeds 1797 - 1800, p. 449). Major Mason was called their son in this deed. Major was born circa 1778 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He was the son of Jeremiah Mason and Ann (-----). He married Rachel Parks circa 1800.2 Major bought land in 1837 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Major Mason bought 130 acres of Whitelaw's tract A109) from Mary P. (Polly) Stran. This would have been on the south side of Guilford Creek..3 Major bought land in 1842 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Major Mason bought 182 acres of land on the north side of Guilford Creek (Whitelaw tract A126) from Robert W. and his wife Mary C. Williams. In 1854 he left it to his son Thorowgood Mason and in time it had other owners and in 1937 was purchased by Herbert V. Ewell. The house on this parcel (Whitelaw's A126D) is known as the Mason House. The quaint little house has always been intriguing to visiting architects, as the stairs definitely are very old, seemingly older than the house itself. There seems some reason to believe that originally the house was a frame structure with two brick ends, and that at some later, but still ancient date, a brick veneer was added in front and rear, as well as at the ends below the eaves line. Should this theory be right, the house as originally built could date from before 1700 and be attributed to Richard Hinman. A clue to the period of the change mentioned has not been found, but it would probably be some time before the death of William Andrews Sr. The brickwork in the gable ends is different from that below the eaves line, as well as from the work in the front and rear walls; also the widening of the house necessitated the flare of the roof line at the eaves. The reatment of the later brickwork is most unusual in that around the doors and windows, and at the corners of the house, ght bricks are set forward a little to produce a panel effect; there is a one-brick offset at the eaves line, where the new bricks were added to the end walls, and a two-brick offset at the water table. The porch has gone since the picture was taken, but it had a brick floor. The hallway has double doors at the front entrance, but a single one at the rear to give access to a much more modern addition. The stairway, with its simple newel post, heavy rail and turned balusters, and bolection-moulding closed stringer, is most ancient. The doorway to the parlor at the left has eight panels. In that room the windows, with twelve panes in each sash, are deep-set, with the walls and plaster beleved towards them. The mantel has some hand-carving or reeding and fretwork, but it must be a later addition, perhaps shortly before 1800. The mantel in the dining room is plain; to the right of it are two small sections of paneled wainscoting, but elsewhere in the whole first floor there is no other indication of any paneling, nor was there any chair rail or conrnice, as the plaster is unmarked. The inside hall walls have clay nogging. Each of the second-floor bedrooms has a tiny fireplace with mantel, and the ceilings, as well as theat in the upper hall, have exposed beaded beams, this being one of the few such examples on the Shore..4 Major was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Major Mason Sr. the head of HH#940, a 72 year old farmer with real estate valued at $8,000. Listed with him were the following Masons: Rachel P., age 68; Thorogood, a 24 year old laborer; and Elizabeth, age 23.
