     Mr. Herbert William Martin, a resident of Saxis, died on 19 Apr 1993, aged 95 years. He was born and reared on Saxis, the son of John Henry and Fannie Griffin Martin. He was a retired hairdresser who lived most of his life in Washington, DC. Survivors were listed (E.S. News, 24 Apr 1993). Contrary to this obituary, Herbert's father's middle name was probably Augustus. In the 1880 census he was listed as "Agustar" Martin and in 1900 and 1910 as John A. Martin. Herbert was born on 7 April 1898 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² He was the son of John Augustus 'Gus' Martin and Fannie E. Griffin. He was christened on 18 August 1898 at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1910 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ He married Ella Maud Cutler on 23 June 1917 at Brittingham Crn, Som Co, MD.⁵ Herbert was living in 1960 at Washington, DC.² Herbert died on 19 April 1993 at age 95.⁶

     According to church records, Josie (Drummond) Stant was on the Pocomoke roll in 1908 and 1917 and was baptised in Sep 1911. Mrs. Josie Anna Stant, wife of Littleton L. Stant, of Sanford, died on 23 Dec 1958, aged 78 years. She was the daughter of Philmore and Emma Smith Drummond. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 8 Jan 1959). Josie was born on 28 February 1881 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA. She was the daughter of Millard Filmore Drummond and Emma Smith. She married Littleton Laury 'Lit' Stant on 10 December 1899 at Somerset Co, MD.² Josie was on the in 1908 roll of the at Pocomoke Meth Ch, Grotons, Acc Co, VA.³ Josie was living in 1939 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA.⁴ Josie died on 23 December 1958 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA, at age 77.⁵ Her body was interred at Drummond Cem, Flag Pond Rd, Sanford, Acc Co, VA.⁶

     Carrie was born on 27 September 1900 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA. She was the daughter of Littleton Laury 'Lit' Stant and Josie Anna Drummond. She married Eslie Anthony Hall on 26 October 1922 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA. He was a 30 year old railroad clerk and she was age 22. He was living in Makemie Park and she was living in Sanford. Miss Carrie Lee Stant, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Littleton S. Stant of Sanford married Mr. Eslie Anthony Hall of Atlantic on 26 Oct 1922 at the Methodist Parsonage at Sanford, VA (Pen. Ent., 4 Nov 1922)..¹ Carrie was living in 1958 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA.² Carrie died on 1 January 1999 at age 98.³

     Eslie was born on 27 January 1893 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ He was the son of Anthony Lamb Hall Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth 'Sallie' Byrd. Eslie was a member of the armed forces circa 1917 serving at US Army, Pvt, World War I.³ He married Carrie Lee Stant on 26 October 1922 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA. He was a 30 year old railroad clerk and she was age 22. He was living in Makemie Park and she was living in Sanford. Miss Carrie Lee Stant, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Littleton S. Stant of Sanford married Mr. Eslie Anthony Hall of Atlantic on 26 Oct 1922 at the Methodist Parsonage at Sanford, VA (Pen.      Gloria was born on 13 March 1928 at Withams, Acc Co, VA.¹ She was the daughter of Eslie Anthony Hall and Carrie Lee Stant. She married Charles Edward Bridges circa 1950.² Gloria was living in 1988 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA.¹ Gloria died on 10 May 1988 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA, at age 60.¹ Her body was interred at J.W. Taylor Cem, Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA.¹

     Charles was born on 13 September 1928 at Mississippi.¹ He married Gloria Lee Hall circa 1950.² Charles died on 13 June 1963 at Wichita, KS, at age 34. According to his obituary, Charles Bridges, a US Marine for the past 17 years, aged 35, was killed in an automobile accident on Thursday, near Wichita, KS, where he was stationed. His son Andy who was riding with him was slightly injured and is still in the hospital. Services were held in Wichita, KS, on Monday and interment was in the family burial lot in Mississippi. They had been living in Derby, KS, for the past 2 years. He was stationed at the base in Wichita and Mrs. Bridges was manager of one of Don Coles Beauty Salons on the Wichita Base..¹ His body was interred on 17 June 1963 at Mississippi.¹

     
According to church records, Julia E. (Drummond) Stant was on the Pocomoke roll in 1898, 1900, 1905, 1908 and 1917 and she was baptised in Sep 1911. Her will (1980) is in Acc Co Will Book No. 38, p302. Julia was born on 9 March 1886 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA.² She was the daughter of John Emory Middleton and Emma A. 'Emily' Collins. Julia was on the in 1898 roll of the at Pocomoke Meth Ch, Grotons, Acc Co, VA.³ She married Lenore Garson Stant on 27 November 1904 at Somerset Co, MD.⁴ Julia died on 12 September 1980 at Accomac, Acc Co, VA, at age 94.¹ Her body was interred at J.W. Taylor Cem, Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA.¹

     According to church records, Theola (Stant) Bundick was on the Pocomoke roll in 1917, took vows in May 1923 and removed certificate in 1938. Theola was born on 25 September 1905 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA.² She was the daughter of Lenore Garson Stant and Julia Elizabeth Middleton. Theola was on the in 1917 roll of the at Pocomoke Meth Ch, Grotons, Acc Co, VA.³ She married George William Bundick on 30 August 1926 at Princess Anne, Som Co, MD.⁴ Theola lived at Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA. Theola died on 3 September 1978 at NAM Hospital, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA, at age 72.¹ Her body was interred at J.W. Taylor Cem, Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA.⁵

     George was born on 2 June 1903 at Assawoman, Acc Co, VA.² He was the son of George Henry Bundick (II) and Margaret E. 'Maggie' Daneker. He married Theola Elizabeth Stant on 30 August 1926 at Princess Anne, Som Co, MD.³ George was living after 1936 at Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA.¹ George was on the roll of the at Meth Ch, Assawoman, Acc Co, VA.¹ George died on 30 November 1962 at NAM Hospital, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA, at age 59.¹ His body was interred at J.W. Taylor Cem, Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA.⁴

     Peggy was born on 30 September 1929 at Assawoman, Acc Co, VA. She was the daughter of George William Bundick and Theola Elizabeth Stant. She resided at, at Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA, in 1988. Peggy died on 12 February 1996 at age 66. Her body was interred.

     Miss Martha Amanda Drewer died on Sunday, 22 Apr 1934, of pneumonia, aged 14, at Saxis, VA. She was a member of Saxis Methodist Church, of which she was a regular attendant at Sunday School and Church services. She was a student at Temperanceville High School and had a number of friends who will regreat to learn of her untimely death. Her popularity was shown by the large attendance at the funeral, and the numerous floral tributes. She was one of the most popular young ladies ever reared on Saxis. She was popluar in school and was an excellent student. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 28 Apr 1934). Martha was born on 9 August 1919 at Saxis or Sanford, Acc Co, VA.² She was the daughter of Marvin Thomas Drewer and Beulah D. Stant. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1920 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ She was christened on 5 April 1926 at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ Martha was on the in 1927 roll of the at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ Martha died on 22 April 1934 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA, at age 14.² Her body was interred at Drewer Cem, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁵

     Miss Amanda Elizabeth Drewer, daugher of W.C. Drewer and Mrs. Norrah T. Rhodes of Saxis, married Mr. Thomas Edward Stevens in Elkton, MD, on 14 Apr 1934. They will make their home in Wilmington, DE (Pen. Ent., 16 Jun 1934). Amanda was born circa 1911 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ She was the daughter of William Cleveland Drewer and Minnie Crandall Bonnewell. Amanda was on the in 1917 roll of the at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1920 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ Amanda was living in 1963.³ Amanda died in 1978 at Wilmington, New Castle Co, DE.³ Her body was interred at Wilmington, New Castle Co, DE.³

     Adeline was born in 1905 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² She was the daughter of William Sylvester 'Ves' Marshall and Lillie Ann Martin.      Mary was born in May 1865 at Accomack Co, VA.² She was the daughter of Thomas W. Spence and Mary Elizabeth 'Polly' Marshall. She married Charles Marshall on 20 April 1885 at Somerset Co, MD.³ She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² Mary was living in 1934.¹

     According to Somerset Co marriage records, "Beatrice" Marshall, age 18, married Elmer Martin, age 21, both of Saxis Island, on 20 Feb 1910. However, according to Donald Martin's 1932 Northampton marriage record, he was born at Saxis Island in 1912, the son of Elmer Martin and Viloa Marshall. It is therefore assumed that her name was Beatrice Viola Marshall. Beatrice was born in January 1892 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ She was the daughter of Charles Marshall and Mary J. Spence. Beatrice was on the in 1900 roll of the at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ Beatrice was living in 1907 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ She married Samuel Taylor on 23 December 1907 at Lawsonia, Som Co, MD.³ She married Elmer Martin on 20 February 1910 at Asbury Meth Ch, Crisfield, Som Co, MD.³

     Samuel was born circa 1886. Samuel was living in 1907 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. He married Beatrice Viola Marshall on 23 December 1907 at Lawsonia, Som Co, MD.¹

     Mr. Leroy Marshall died in Northampton Hospital on 3 Oct 1962, aged 63 years. He was a retired movie projectionest, the son of the late Charles and Mary Spence Marshall, a native of Saxis. He spent most of his life in Cape Charles and was buried in the Cape Charles Cemetery. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 4 Oct 1962). Leroy was born in December 1898 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was the son of Charles Marshall and Mary J. Spence. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ Leroy died on 3 October 1962 at NAM Hospital, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA, at age 63.² His body was interred at Cape Charles Cem, N'hamp Co, VA.³

     George was born circa 1888 at Accomack Co, VA.² He was the son of George W. Tyler and Mary Jack Annis. He married Vinia Marshall circa 1909. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1910 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² He married Lida N. Hart on 6 January 1913 at Hallwood, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as David Tyler, a 24 year old widowed oysterman, the son of George & Mary Tyler and she was shown as Lida N. Hart, age 16, the daughter of William F. & Vianna Hart..¹

     William McKinley Marshall was christian at the Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA, in May 1903 (Church Records). He was listed as one of the mem who left for Camp Lee on 6 Sep 1918 from Saxis (Acc News, 13 Sep 1918). He was a US Army Pvt, 31 Co, 155 Depot Brg, in World War I (tombstone). Mr. William McKinley Marshall died at the Marine Hospital at Norfolk on 22 Jul 1954, aged 56 years. He was a waterman of Saxis, the son of the late Sam Marshall. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 29 Jul 1954). William was born on 4 March 1898 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² He was the son of Samuel J. Marshall and Hester Annie Abbott. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ William was a member of the armed forces serving at US Army, World War I.² William was living on 5 June 1918 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA, (Army Registration).⁴ William died on 22 July 1954 at Marine Hospital, Norfolk, VA, at age 56.⁵ His body was interred at Ellis Cem, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.²

     Mrs. Nellie S. Sterling, aged 31 years, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Fred Martin, at Saxis on 21 Aug 1930. The funeral was at the Holliness Church at Saxis, where she was a member, conducted by Rev. E.C. Walls and Fulcher. Interment was in the Ellis Cemetery at Saxis. She was survived by her parents, 2 sisters, and 3 brothers, who were listed (E.S. News, 29 Aug 1930). Nellie was born in 1899 at Accomack Co, VA.² She was the daughter of Samuel J. Marshall and Hester Annie Abbott.      George E. Marshall, age 39 years, died on Saxis. The funeral was 12 Aug 1927 at the Holiness Church by the Rev. W.H. Vickers, with interment in the Ellis Cemetery. Survivors were listed (E.S. News, 19 Aug 1927). Mr. George E. Marshall of Saxis, VA, died on 11 Aug 1927, aged 39 years (Pen. Ent., 23 Aug 1962 - 35 years ago). George was born in 1888 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² He was the son of Samuel J. Marshall and Hester Annie Abbott. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He married Manie E. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ She married George David Tyler circa 1909. Vinia died on 1 April 1910 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. Saxis - Mrs. Tyler, daughter of Mr. Samuel Marshall of A., deceased, died suddenly Friday, 1 Apr 1910, at the age of 17 (E.S. News, 7 Apr 1955 - 45 years ago). This is believed to have been Vinia, daughter of Samuel and Annie Abbott Marshall, as there was a Geroge D. Tyler (aged 22, an oysterman and a son-in-law without a wife) listed in the 1910 household (HH#68) of Samuel and Annie Marshall on Saxis..²

     Ranford was born in 1901 at Accomack Co, VA.² He was the son of Samuel J. Marshall and Hester Annie Abbott. He was christened in May 1903 at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1910 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1920 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ He married Bessie C. Williams on 27 October 1922 at County Line, Somerset Co, MD.⁵ Ranford died in 1970.² His body was interred at Ellis Cem, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.²

     John was born on 4 August 1867 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ He was the son of John Riley Marshall and Louisa 'Susan' Miles. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1870 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1880 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ John died in 1882 at Accomack Co, VA.⁴

     William Thomas "Willie" Marshall was listed in the 1900 household of William and Lizzie Marshall as "Geo. H.", born Jun 1885; in 1910 as William J., age 25; and in 1920 as Willie T. Marshall, age 32. His 1886 Acc birth record shows him to be William T. His Acc marriage record shows him to be Willie T. and his obituary reported him as William Thomas Marshall. William T. Marshall, age 23, and Evelyn "Lytton", age 18, were issued a marriage license in Somerset Co, MD, on 1 Feb 1909, but it was returned unused by William T. Marshall. In addition to his main occupation as an oysterman, Willie Marshall was a collector for the Saxis Meth Ch for many years before his death. Mr. William Thomas Marshall of Saxis died in the Northampton Hospital on 22 Oct 1964, aged 78 years. He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Hall Marshall, a lifelong resident of Saxis and a member of the Saxis Meth Ch. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 29 Oct 1964). Conflicting evidence states that William was born on 19 January 1885.² William was born on 10 January 1886 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was the son of George William Marshall and Annie Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Hall. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1910 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ He married Marcelean 'Lena' Killmon on 6 January 1918 at Accomack Co, VA.⁵ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1920 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁶ William died on 22 October 1964 at NAM Hospital, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA, at age 78.⁷

     The following was taken from Vernon Drewer Obituary. -
Harvey Vernon Drewer, Sr., 60, Chairman of the Accomack County Board of Supervisors, died unexpectedly in Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital at 6:00 a.m. yesterday, only hours before the Board was slated to sit at its regular session in Accomac. Mr. Drewer had been carried to the local hospital on Tuesday. He has been in the hospital for treatment on numerous occasions in the past few years.
He had been Chairman of the Accomack County Supervisors since December, 20, 1961, following his election to that position after the death of the late W.E. West, Sr. of Tasley. A lifetime resident of Saxis, he was elected to the Board of Supervisors representing Atlantic District in 1955, following H.K. Baker into that office.
The son of the late Harvey A. Drewer and Florence Phillips Drewer, he was known to be one of the largest seafood operators on the DelMarVA Peninsula and was owner of the largest fleet of freight boats on the Chesapeake Bay. Only last fall he had added another craft purchased in New York.
Mr. Drewer was born on Saxis on August 18, 1904. Early in life he became interested in the seafood business and had been very successful. He was a member of Saxis Methodist Church and president of the H.A. Drewer Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Temperanceville Lodge 121, AF & AM, of Khedive Temple, Norfolk, and of the Atlantic District Ruritan Club.
Harvey was born in 1904 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² He was the son of Harvey Anderson Drewer and Florence Temple Phillips. He was christened on 12 May 1907 at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1910 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ He married Annie P. Furniss on 24 August 1926 at Girdletree, Wor Co, MD.⁴ Harvey was living on 16 January 1942 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA, (Selective Service).⁵ Harvey died in 1965.² His body was interred at Drewer Cem, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁶
