Mr. Herbert William Martin, a resident of Saxis, died on 19 Apr 1993, aged 95 years. He was born and reared on Saxis, the son of John Henry and Fannie Griffin Martin. Charles was born on 13 September 1928 at Mississippi.1 He married Gloria Lee Hall circa 1950.2 Charles died on 13 June 1963 at Wichita, KS, at age 34. According to his obituary, Charles Bridges, a US Marine for the past 17 years, aged 35, was killed in an automobile accident on Thursday, near Wichita, KS, where he was stationed. His son Andy who was riding with him was slightly injured and is still in the hospital. Services were held in Wichita, KS, on Monday and interment was in the family burial lot in Mississippi. They had been living in Derby, KS, for the past 2 years. He was stationed at the base in Wichita and Mrs. Bridges was manager of one of Don Coles Beauty Salons on the Wichita Base..1 His body was interred on 17 June 1963 at Mississippi.1

Miss Martha Amanda Drewer died on Sunday, 22 Apr 1934, of pneumonia, aged 14, at Saxis, VA. She was a member of Saxis Methodist Church, of which she was a regular attendant at Sunday School and Church services. She was a student at Temperanceville High School and had a number of friends who will regreat to learn of her untimely death. Her popularity was shown by the large attendance at the funeral, and the numerous floral tributes. She was one of the most popular young ladies ever reared on Saxis. She was popluar in school and was an excellent student. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 28 Apr 1934). Martha was born on 9 August 1919 at Saxis or Sanford, Acc Co, VA.2 She was the daughter of Marvin Thomas Drewer and Beulah D. Stant. However, according to Donald Martin's 1932 Northampton marriage record, he was born at Saxis Island in 1912, the son of Elmer Martin and Viloa Marshall. It is therefore assumed that her name was Beatrice Viola Marshall. Beatrice was born in January 1892 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.1 She was the daughter of Charles Marshall and Mary J. Spence. Marshall, age 23, and Evelyn "Lytton", age 18, were issued a marriage license in Somerset Co, MD, on 1 Feb 1909, but it was returned unused by William T. Marshall. In addition to his main occupation as an oysterman, Willie Marshall was a collector for the Saxis Meth Ch for many years before his death. Mr. William Thomas Marshall of Saxis died in the Northampton Hospital on 22 Oct 1964, aged 78 years. He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Hall Marshall, a lifelong resident of Saxis and a member of the Saxis Meth Ch. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 29 Oct 1964). Conflicting evidence states that William was born on 19 January 1885.2 William was born on 10 January 1886 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.1 He was the son of George William Marshall and Annie Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Hall. Harvey Vernon Drewer, Sr., 60, Chairman of the Accomack County Board of Supervisors, died unexpectedly in Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital at 6:00 a.m. yesterday, only hours before the Board was slated to sit at its regular session in Accomac. Mr. Drewer had been carried to the local hospital on Tuesday. He has been in the hospital for treatment on numerous occasions in the past few years.
He had been Chairman of the Accomack County Supervisors since December, 20, 1961, following his election to that position after the death of the late W.E. West, Sr. of Tasley. A lifetime resident of Saxis, he was elected to the Board of Supervisors representing Atlantic District in 1955, following H.K. Baker into that office.
The son of the late Harvey A. Drewer and Florence Phillips Drewer, he was known to be one of the largest seafood operators on the DelMarVA Peninsula and was owner of the largest fleet of freight boats on the Chesapeake Bay. Only last fall he had added another craft purchased in New York.
Mr. Drewer was born on Saxis on August 18, 1904. Early in life he became interested in the seafood business and had been very successful. He was a member of Saxis Methodist Church and president of the H.A. Drewer Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Temperanceville Lodge 121, AF & AM, of Khedive Temple, Norfolk, and of the Atlantic District Ruritan Club.
