John Gray1

     In Apr 1672, Jno. Gray, aged 3 and the son of Anne, was named in Acc Co Orders, 1671-73, p. 88, which would put his birth circa 1669. Possibibly another Jno. Grey, aged 18 and a servent of William Brittingham, was named in Apr 1675 in Acc Co Wills, 1673-1676, p. 263, which would put his birth circa 1657. In 1683 Miles and Ann Gray sold all of tract A116 to Roger Miles, but two years later (1685) Roger and his wife Ann deeded 200 acres back to Ann Gray for life and then it was to go to her son John Gray (Whitelaw, p. 1124). On 28 Nov 1689, a John Gray an inhabitant of Somerset Co, MD, along with many others, signed a loyalty oath to the King (Old Somerset, p. 349). In 1694 John and Bethula Gray sold the southern half of the Ann Gray part of A116 to William Lewis (Whitelaw, p. 1127). The deed was dated 18 Mar 1693 and stated in part "John Gray, Planter, and wife Bethula sold William Lewis 100 acres in the woods between Gargaphia and Gilford." On 6 Oct 1695, John "Grey," Robert Hawley and John Arue witnessed the will of Franics Wharton (Acc Co Wills &c, 1692-1715 (xi), p. 251). In 1697 John Grey and wife Bethula sold their other 100 acres to Richard Price (Whitelaw, p. 1127). The deed was dated 4 Aug 1697 and stated in part "John Gray, Planter, for 5000 lbs tobacco paid by Richard Price; 100 acres in the woods between Gargaphia and Gilford Creek, part of 200 acres granted to Roger Miles and Ann his wife, set over to Ann Gray "mother of me" by a deed dated 17 Nov 1685" (Acc Co Wills &c, 1692-1715(xi), p. 267). Ann Gray also deeded land to John Gray on 21 Jan 1678/8. On 4 Sep 1700, John Gray, along with John Polke and William Alexander Sr., witnessed a deed of division of Reverend Thomas Wilson in Somerset Co, MD. John Gray, along with Archibald Smith and Anthony Goldsmith were named overseers of the will of John Goldsmith, a Somerseet Co, MD, carpenter, whose will was probated on 19 Jan 1701/2. On 3 Mar 1702, John Gray petitioned the court for the administration of the estate of his mother, Ann Abbott (Acc Co Orders, 1697-1703, p. 142). John Gray was born illegitimate. John was born circa 1669.2 He was the son of John Hancock and Ann (-----). John was living in April 1672 at Accomack Co, VA.2 He married Bethula (-----) before 1694.3

Miles Gray

M, b. circa 1637, d. 1717
     On 27 Oct 1668, Miles Gray, who had fathered a bastard child by Hannah Leach who was one of Ann Toft servants, paid a fine to Ann Toft of 1500 lbs of tobacco (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, f. 20). In Feb 1696/7, Mr. Miles Gray was listed as a Vestryman for Somerset Parish which consisted of Manokin and Many Hundreds in Somerset Co, MD. Others listed with him included John Huett, Richard Chambers, John Panter, Nathaniel Horsey and Peter Elzey (Old Somerset, p. 155). Miles Gray was also listed as a settler in Somerset Co, MD, between 1666 and 1700 (Old Somerset, p. 465). On 27 Jul 1708, Miles Gray gives 1 mare to Mary Turpin daughter of John Turpin (Somerset County Livestock Marks, Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records, Vol. 1, p. 160). Miles was born circa 1637.1 Miles immigrated to before 1655.2 He married Ann (-----) circa 1660.3 Miles was living in March 1672.1 Miles died in 1717 at Somerset Co, MD.4 Miles's will was probated on 21 November 1717 at Somerset Co, MD.2

Ann (-----)

     On 2 Mar 1666, Ann, wife of Miles Gray, admitted adultrey with John Hancock from Apr 1665 to 2 Mar 1666 and asks husband's forgiveness. On 18 Feb 1667, Ann had a bastard child and Miles left her. Ann Toft paid her fine instead of the whipping. On 17 Feb 1667, Miles Gray disowned Ann Gray, servant to Ann Toft, as his wife. She had a bastard child and he left her to the law. On 27 Oct 1668, Ann Toft paid 500 lbs of tobacco for her (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, pp. 21, 51, & 60). Also on 27 Oct 1668, Miles Gray, who had fathered a bastard child by Hannah Leach who was one of Ann Toft's servants, paid Ann Toft a fine of 1500 lbs of tobacco (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, f. 20). In 1669, Jane the wife of Robert Hill who had formerly been appointed whipper for a year, was ordered to "some time in each month Jane Hill shall go to the house of Mrs. Ann Toft and likewise to all other houses where the like order shall be given, and that the sheriff or deputy see that Jane Hill do with a fitting whip give unto John Hancock, Ann Gray, Adam Rocinson and Penelope Stafford twenty lashes on their bare backs soundly laid on, and this is to be continued for a year, once in each month" (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, p. --). In 1671 Ann Gray petitions the court for maintenance and on 17 Apr 1672 she gives youngest son Alexander, until he is 21 to William Brittingham, and her son John, until his is 21 to William Anderson. Also on that same day, Miles Gray gives permission for Ann to leave the county. Ann later asks for dower land at Muddy Creek (Acc Co Orders, 1671-1673(iv), pp. 73, 87, 88, & 111). On 11 Nov 1674, Miles Gray of Somerset Co, MD, is not responsible for debts of Ann Gray (Acc Co Wills, 1673-76(v), p. 215). On 21 Jan 1688/9, Ann Gray made a deed of gift to son John of 200 acres. He was under 21 at the time. Also named were John's niece and nephew, Samuel Thomas and Emblin Hubbard Thomas, children of Thomas and Jane Thomas (Acc Co Wills & Deeds, 1676-90 (vi), p. 511). A Samuel Thomas was also named in Ann's 2nd husband, John Abbott Sr.'s will of 1694 (Acc Co Wills &c, 1692-1715(xi), p. 73). Ann was born circa 1640. She married Miles Gray circa 1660.1 Ann died on 3 March 1702.2

     In his will, written 24 Mar 1760, Benjamin Gray named a wife Rachel and sons Thomas and Levin Gray. His wife Rachel was to have the use of land where he then lived during her widowhood and then to my 2 sons and for want of heirs to Jacob Sherwood, said tract containing 25 acres. Witnesses were Thomas Batson and Thomas Sherwood. In order of probate Rachel Gray, widow of Benjamin, qualified (Acc Co Wills &c, 1757-61). Benjamin was born circa 1720. He was the son of Dingly Gray and Mary Johnson Johnson?. Benjamin was living on 23 August 1742.1 He married Rachel (-----) circa 1750.2 Benjamin's will was probated on 27 May 1760 at Accomack Co, VA.3 Benjamin died in 1760.3
