Adam Thorowgood was the 7th son of William Thorowgood and Anne Edwards. He was listed in the census, 1623/4 at Elizabeth City and was also there in 1624/5 when he was given as aged 18 and as a servant in the muster of Mr. Edward Waters. As Captain Adam Thorowgood, Gentleman of Kiquotan, he purchased 150 acres on the north side of Hampton Roads from John Gundry, 30 Dec 1626. He then returned to England and was married. Back in Virginia with his wife, he was appointed, 7 Mar 1628/9, one of the commissioners for holding monthly courts at Elizabeth City, served as Burgess for Elizabeth City, 1629, for the Lower Part of Elizabeth City, 1630-32, and in the Council, 1637-38. In 1629-30 when the Council and Governor determined to open Chiskyacke for settlement and desired a company of men there to plant corn, Adam Thorowgood volunteered to supply four men for the purpose. He patented an additional 400 acres in Elizabeth City County, 21 Mar 1634/5. On 6 Aug 1634 the Privy Council directed a letter to the Governor and Council of Virginia recommending that Adam Thorowgood, Gentleman, for special services and industries performed for the good of the colony, be allowed land on the Chesapeakean River to the southward to the Bay, where it may be most convenient for him. As a result of this recommendation, Capt. Adam Thorowgood received a patent, 24 Jun 1635, for 5350 acres at Lynnhaven, in the area which became Lower Norfolk County, 1637, due him for his personal adventure, for that of his wife Sarah and for transportation at his own charges of 105 persons into the colony between 1628 and 1634. With this large land grant assured, Capt. Thorowgood with his family moved from the north side of Hampton Roads to Lynnhaven, where about 1634-35 he began the construction of a small brick house. He was a member of the first court held for Lower Norfolk County, 15 May 1637, and met with the court as a member, 21 Nov 1638, at the house of Mr. Julian. He was an early vestryman of Lynnhaven Parish and on 15 May 1637, before the church was built, a penance was ordered performed at the dwelling house of Captain Thorowgood. The first church of Lynnhaven Parish was built, 1639, on Adam Thorowgood's land at Church Point on the west side of the Western Branch of Lynnhaven River. His will requested that his body be buried in the parish church at Lynnhaven near his children and named friends and relatives in England and Virginia (Adventurers of Purse and Person, pp. 607-608). His common name was Adam. Adam was born circa 1602 at Norfolk, England.1 He was the son of William Thorowgood and Anne Edwards. He was baptized in 1603 at St. Botolph's, Grimston, Norfolk, England.1 Adam immigrated to in 1621.1 He married Sarah (15) Offley on 18 July 1627 at St. Anne's Ch, Blackfriars, London.1 Adam died in April 1640.1 Adam's will was probated on 27 April 1640.1
