John Revel Onley's son Herman Onley remembered him as having a brother George Onley and half-brother Smith Onley. After the death of his mother when he was about 4 year olds (probably even younger) he and his brother George were reared by their Aunt Peggy Gaskins. This fits exactly with the will of his Aunt Margaret Taylor who named a nephew John Revell Gaskins Onley and left him all her property. She had been Margaret 'Peggy' Gaskins, before her second marriage to Revel Taylor. Her first marriage was to Revell Gaskins. John was born on 4 April 1842 at Accomack Co, VA. His 1867 marriage record puts his birth at 1843..2 He was the son of John S. Onley and Pamelia Melson. John was listed with another family in the cenus of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as John Revell, age 8 in HH#830 headed by Revel Taylor, a 64 year old farmer. Also listed was Margaret Taylor, age 49, who was evidently his Aunt Peggy Gaskins, as remembered by his son Herman Onley. She had just married Revel Taylor in 1849 and still had her nephew with her. Why he was not shown as John Revell Onley is not clear..3 John was named in his Aunt's will written on 8 June 1859 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as nephew John Revell Gaskins Onley in the will of Margaret Taylor. She left him all her property..1 John was listed with another family in the cenus of in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as John R. Onley, an 18 year old farm laborer in HH#34 headed by George L. East, a 46 year old farmer..4 John was a member of the armed forces serving at Co E 39 VA Inf, Conf. States Am..5 He married Sarah Ann 'Sary' Ailworth on 17 January 1867 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as John R. Onley, a 24 year old farmer (parents not shown) and she was shown as Sarah Ann Ailworth, age 20, the daughter of Levin & Eliz'th Ailworth. They were married by G.W. Matthews..6 John was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1870 at Atlantic Dist, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as John Only the head of HH#AT64, a 28 year old oysterman. Listed with him were Sary Only, age 24 and keeping house and Julius Only, age 2..7 John died on 1 November 1925 at Sanford, Acc Co, VA, at age 83. John R. Onley, aged 83 years of Sanford, died on 1 Nov 1925. At the age of 20 he enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 and served 3 years. Burial was in the Mulberry Hill Cemetery, survivors were listed (E.S. News, 13 Nov 1925)..8 His body was interred at Groton's Cem, Hallwood, Acc Co, VA. His tombstone shows him as John Revel Onley, Co E., 39th VA Inf, C.S.A. There are no dates and he is burried next to Sarah Onley. (Note: Since his obituray shows he was burried at Mulberry Hill Cemetery, which is in Sanford, VA, he must have been moved to Groton's Cemetery.).5
