He was a Barrister. Captain Edmund Scarburgh lived for a time in St. Martin's-in-the-Fields parish, London. As requested in his father's will, Edmund was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge, England, 15 Apr 1602 and remained at Caius College until he had taken the degree of barrister. He came to Virginia for the first time about 1620. It is thought that he probably came alone on his first visit to America, leaving his family in England. By 1628-29 he had settled with his family on Magothy Bay on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where he was a Commissioner for the Plantation of Accomack in 1631 and represented Accomack in the House of Burgesses in 1629, 1631, and 1632, and was presiding Commissioner of the first court held in Accomack County in 1632 and served until his death. He died intestate after 17 April 1634, the last time he served as a member of the Accomack Court, and prior to 9 January 1635, when Hannah Scarburgh, "widow," sold cattle to Captain Thomas Graves (Ames, Mears & Allied Lines, pp. 345-346). His wife Hannah "Scarborough" was also referred to as a widow on 19 Feb 1634/5 (N'hamp Orders, Wills, Deeds, etc, f. 48). His common name was Edmund. Edmund was born in 1584 at North Walsham, Co Norfolk, England.1 He was the son of Henry Scarburgh Esq. and Mary Humberstone. He was baptized on 25 December 1584 at North Walsham, Co Norfolk, England.2 He married Hannah Butler in 1615 at England.3 Edmund was present at Sir Charles [2] Scarburgh'S christening on 29 December 1615 at St. Martin's in-the-Fields, London, England.      Edmund Scarburgh, baptized 2 Oct 1617, probably accompanied his parents to Virginia. He deposed 26 Oct 1653, aged about 34, that he had lived in Virginia 22 years, but was born in London and was a trader with New Amsterdam. He was a witness in the "Accawmack" Court, March 1633/4, to a deed of sale of two wild cows by his father. In addition to the patent granted him upon the death of his father, he received also on the same date, 28 Nov 1635, 200 acres on the seaboard side in Accomack which had also been assigned previously to his father. He rose rapidly to a place of prominence in Virginia, serving as Burgess from Northampton 1643, 1645-48, 1652, 1656, 1660-62, and from Accomack 1666-70, was speaker of the House of Burgessess, 1645, Surveyor General of Virginia, 1665-70, King's Collector of quit-rents, 1663, and justice and sheriff of Northampton County. Colonel Edmund Scarburgh engaged extensively in maritime shipping and was part or sole owner of several vessels. His most important enterprise was the extraction of salt from sea water by evaporation for which he obtained a monopoly on the Eastern Shore. In his capacity as captain of militia and later as commander-in-chief of forces on the Eastern Shore, he led a number of raids against Indians. His difficulties with them led him to harsh and unjust treatment of the savages, on which and other charges he was tried and by order of the General Court, 1670, he was suspended from "all offices as well as military and civil until by his future obedience and fidelity it shall please the Right Honorable the Governor to restore him." He has been called arrogant, contentious and power hungry and had made, in 1663, an unofficial effort to annex the Maryland settlements at Annemessex and Manokin (now Dorchester and Somerset Counties, Maryland) to Accomack County by moving a boundary point thirty miles to the north. His death was noted by Governor Sir William Berkeley, 1671, and on 23 May 1671 his son Charles and his sons-in-law John West and Devorax Browne were granted letters of administration of his estate in place of Mary Scarburgh, relict of Edmund. His estate was much involved and included land holdings in Virginia and Maryland variously estimated to be between 46,000 and 75,000 acres (Adventurers of Purse and Person, 3rd Ed, pp. 542-543). Devoras Browne was appointed administrator for Col. Edmund Scarburgh's estate in 1672, but there was no order of qualification (Acc Co Orders, 1671-1673(iv), p. 188). His common name was Edmund. Edmund was born in 1617 at St. Martin's in-the-Fields, London, England. In Nov 1642 he was age 24, which puts his birth at 1618, but since he was baptised in Oct 1617, he must have been born earlier that year..2 He was the son of Capt. Edmund [1] Scarburgh (I) and Hannah Butler. He was baptized on 2 October 1617 at St. Martin's in-the-Fields, London, England.3 Edmund immigrated to before 1634.1 He married Mary (Cade? or Littleton?) circa 1639 at Accomack Co, VA.4,5 Edmund died in May 1671 at Hedric Cottage, Occahannock Cr, Acc Co, VA.6 His body was interred at Hedra Cottage, Scarborough Neck, Acc Co, VA.7 Edmund's estate was administered in 1672 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Devoras Browne was named to settle his estate. There was no order of qualifications..8

Mary (Cade? or Littleton?)

F, b. 1610, d. December 1691
She may have been the daughter of Sir. Edward Littleton, Chief Justice, and Mary Walter, of England. However, "Adventurers of Purse and Person" notes that she may not have been the daughter of Sir Edward Littleton, based on Whitelaw's suppositions. However, in a phone conversation with Mr. Matthew Wise of Salem, VA, on 19 Aug 1995, Mr. Wise indicated that he received a letter from Mr. Dorman, a co-author of the above reference, indicating that they had more recent references indicating that she was Mary Littleton. Evidently she was older than Col. Scarburgh and had a prior marriage to a Mr. Jones in England. According to the above reference, she married 1st, Gilbert Jones of Welshpool, County Montgomery, Wales (and perhaps secondly, ---- Newport), and took over administration of her father's estate, 1633, after her mother's death. Thomas Teackle Upshur, a noted Eastern Shore genealogist from the late 1800's, showed her as Mary Cade. She did have a great-granddaughter named Mary Cade Wise. Mary was born in 1610 at England.1 She married Gilbert Jones circa 1630 at England.2 Mary immigrated to in 1635.3 She married Col. Edmund [3] Scarburgh (II) circa 1639 at Accomack Co, VA.4,5 She made a will on 14 June 1691 at Accomack Co, VA. Now resident at the house of Anthony West at Merry Branch. To grandson Anthony West. To his daughter Matilda. To daughter Matilda West. Son Charles Scarburgh. Daughter Tabitha Custis. Son Edmund Scarburgh. To grandson Edmund Scarburgh (under 12), son of Edmund Scarburgh. Granddaughter Mary West. Granddaughter Tabitha Custis. Daughter Matilda West and grandson Anthony West residual legatees and executors. Witt: James Alexander, Edward Marten, Tully Robinson, Richard Bally Jr. - Codicil: Revoking legacy to son Charles Scarburgh on account of his neglect..6 Mary died in December 1691 at Accomack Co, VA. She died at the home of Anthony West on Merry Branch..6 Mary's will was probated on 15 December 1691 at Accomack Co, VA.6
