It was quite a shock to this community (Sanford) to hear of the death of Mr. Sylvester Marshall of Saxis, who was drowned 6 Mar 1917 (Acc News, 16 Mar 1917). His wife "Lilia," aged 36 and widowed, and 5 of their children (the youngest was only 2) were living with her parents, Ed and Annie Martin, in 1920. William was born on 17 July 1880 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He was the son of Lewis Finney Marshall and Tryphenia A. 'Triffy' Crockett. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.2 William was on the in 1900 roll of the at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.3 He married Lillie Ann Martin on 1 July 1900 at Accomack Co, VA.4 William was confirmed at age 20, on 27 August 1900 at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.3 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1910 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.5 William died on 6 March 1917 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA, at age 36.6

On Saturday night, 15 Mar 1884, an unsuccessful attempt was made by a burglar to break into the house of Capt. William Rhodes, situated in Marsh Market in the Freeschool Nech of Acc Co. The Captain had left on the Monday previous for the oyster bed (Pen. Ent., 15 Mar 1884). According to Church records he transfer from Sanford to Saxis in 1899. William was born circa 1844.1 Conflicting evidence states that William was born in September 1850 at Accomack Co, VA.2 He married Missouri C. Russell on 6 September 1874 at Somerset Co, MD.1 William was on the in 1898 roll of the at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.3 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1900 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.2 William died on 2 December 1909.3

Two of our young men brought home from the James River with typhoid fever, have died of the disease. R. Lee Young died Sunday night, 14 Oct 1900, and Columbus Linton died early in the month (Pen. Acc birth records show an unnamed child of Charles S. and Triffie Furniss being born 19 Sep 1893. Evidently he died before 1900 for only Elwood and Otho are listed as the children of Charles and Triffie Furniss. However, adding some confusion is the fact that Triffie is listed as having given birth to 2 children and 2 are living.
