     The following was provided by Evelyn (Lewis) Powell. "Will Griffin, who was a soldier in the Confederate Army, owned a little trunk which had a bullet hole in it from a Yankee rifle. The trunk was said to have saved his life. Kate later gave the trunk to her grandson, Earl K. Drewer Sr. After the war, Will was in the Foreign Service. He was with Embassies and traveled a lot. When he was off duty he spent a lot of time with John R. and Kate. He said his sister, Kate, was an angle and his brother, Neal, was a devil." William was employed at as a Foreign Service. William was born circa 1862. He was the son of Cornelius L. Griffin and Virginia A. Foster.

     The following was provided by Evelyn (Lewis) Powell. "Neal Griffin was a bank cashier in the Norfolk area and may have become the president of a bank. He moved to Florida after he retired." Neal was employed at as a Bank teller. Neal was born circa 1864. He was the son of Cornelius L. Griffin and Virginia A. Foster.

     According to the Peninsula Enterprise of 31 May 1884, John Dennis and Miss Olivia Marshall were married on Saxes' Island on Sunday, 18 May 1884. According to edition of 5 Jul 1884, they were married on 29 May 1884. Acc Co marriage records show the marriage as 20 Jun 1884. Olevia Dennis, aged 62 years and wife of John, died at home at Saxis on 20 Sep 1927. Funeral services were at the Methodist Church by Rev. Reynolds with interment at the family cemetery at Saxis. Survivors were listed (E.S. News, 23 Sep 1927). Mrs. Olivia Dennis of Saxis, VA, died on 20 Sep 1927, aged 62 years (Pen. Ent., 27 Sep 1962 - 35 years ago). Olivia was born in 1865 at Accomack Co, VA.² She was the daughter of Samuel J. Marshall Sr. and Amanda 'Mendie' Lewis. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1870 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1880 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ She married John W. 'Jack' Dennis Jr. on 20 June 1884 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as John Dennis Jr., a 20 year old oysterman, born and living in Acc Co, the son of John Sr. & Eliza Dennis and she was shown as Oliva E. Marshall, age 18, born and living in Acc Co, the daughter of Sam'l Marshall and Armina Bonnewell. They were married at Sykes Island by R.B. Beadles. According to the Marsh Market news Mr. John Dennis and Miss Olivia Marshall were married on Saxes' Island on Sunday, 18 May 1884, by Rev. R.B. Beadles (Pen. Ent., 31 May 1884). However, Acc Co records show 20 Jun 1884..⁵ Olivia died on 20 September 1927.⁶ Her body was interred at Glenn Cem, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.²

     Thomas was born circa 1849 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² He was the son of Revel James Lewis and Matilda Emily Spence. Thomas was listed with his parents in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Thomas F. Lewis, age 1 in HH#801 headed by Revel J. Lewis, a 27 year old farmer. This was on Saxis Island..³ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1870 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁵ He married Mary Ellen Corbin on 9 August 1872 at Accomack Co, VA. They were married by Montcalm Oldham, a Methodist minister. Thomas was age 23 and an oysterman and Mary was age 14..⁶ He married Mary E. Crockett on 10 August 1882 at Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA. They were married by Montcalm Oldham, a Methodist minister. Thomas was age 30, a widowed waterman, and Mary was age 18..⁶

     Elizabeth was born on 29 June 1850 at Accomack Co, VA.³ She was the daughter of Samuel Absalom Lewis and Elizabeth M. 'Elise' Lewis. Elizabeth was listed with her parents in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Elizabeth A. Lewis, age 2/12 in HH#792 headed by Absalom Lewis, a 42 year old farmer..² She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ She married William James Marshall on 11 April 1872 at Accomack Co, VA. They were married by Montcalm Oldham, a Methodist minister. William was age 42 and a widowed sailor and Elizabeth was age 22..¹ Elizabeth was living in 1929 at West Point, VA.⁵ Elizabeth died on 25 December 1931 at age 81.³

     Charles was born in January 1854 at Accomack Co, VA.² He was the son of Revel James Lewis and Matilda Emily Spence. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.^3,4 He married Charlotte Temple 'Lottie' Wessells on 21 December 1878 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. They were married by John Wesley Hilldrup, a Methodist minister at 'Sykes Isld.' Charles was a 24 year old oysterman..¹ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1880 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.^5,6,7 Charles died circa 1909.⁸

     It is assumed that this James E. Lewis is the same as James R. Lewis, who reported died of lock jaw in Aug of 1868. James was born on 15 March 1855 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was the son of Revel James Lewis and Matilda Emily Spence. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.² James was living in 1860 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² James died in August 1868 at Accomack Co, VA, at age 13.³

     Mrs. Charlotte Temple (Wessells) Lewis, died at the home of her son, Mr. Norman Lewis, at Pocomoke City, MD, on 12 Nov 1937, aged 81 years. She was the widow of Charles H. Lewis of Saxis who died 28 years ago, survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 27 Nov 1937). Charlotte was born circa 1858 at Accomack Co, VA.² She was the daughter of Alfred F. Wessells and Kissiah B.      Missouri was born circa 1856 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ She was the daughter of Alfred F. Wessells and Kissiah B. 'Kessy' Phillips. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.¹ She married (-----) Turlington circa 1880.² Missouri died before 1937.³

     Edward was born circa 1903 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ He was the son of Revel J. Lewis and Edith M. Nelson. He was christened in August 1904 at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ Edward was living in 1917.²

     Melissa was living at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.² Melissa E. (Lewis) Glenn, aged 68 and widowed, was living with her son "Hue" Glenn in 1920. Amelia Lewis, age 65 and single, listed as a cousin was also living with "Hue." Mrs. Melissa Glenn, widow of George W. Glenn Sr., of Saxis Island, died Thursday 31 Mar 1921, aged 65. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 9 Apr 1921). Mrs. Malissa Glenn, who had been ill for a number of years, died on 1 Apr 1921, leaving 4 sons and 9 grandchildren. Funeral services were at Saxis M.E. Church by the Rev. Hasting and her remains were taken to Norfolk (Acc News, 8 Apr 1921). Melissa was born circa 1856 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ She was the daughter of John T. Lewis Sr. and Sarah E. 'Sally' Spence. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.¹ She married George Washington Glenn circa 1878.^3,4 Melissa was on the in 1898 roll of the at Meth Ch, Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁵ Melissa died on 31 March 1921 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁶ Her body was interred at Norfolk, VA.⁷

     Permelia was born on 9 May 1855 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.¹ She was the daughter of John T. Lewis Sr. and Sarah E. 'Sally' Spence. Permelia died before 1860.²

     Rebecca's first marriage record indicated that she was the daughter of Susan Drewer and was born in Baltimore, MD. This is consistent with the her brother's death certificate, which indicated that he was the son of John Drewer and Susan Simpson and was born in Baltimore, MD. In 1850, Rebecca, age 13, and her brother, John, age 9, were both living on Saxis with their step-father, William Russell, age 30, in the household (HH#793) of Gillet Marshall and his wife Henny. Also living in the household were William Russell, Jr., age 15, and two Marshall children, Samuel J., age 5 and Virginia E., age 2 months. In 1860 she was living on Saxis in the household (HH#378) of Severn P. Miles and his wife Hestor Ann. She was first married in 1861, but her husband, Severn James Crockett, Sr., evidently had died before the 1870 Census, because the 1870 Census showed her living on Saxis in the household (HH#384) of her brother John W. Drewer. Her daughter, Margaret A. Crockett, and her son, Severn J. Crockett, Jr, listed as "Levin," were both living with their grandfather, George Crockett, in 1870. Her second marriage was to William T. Crockett, her brother-in-law, in 1873, but evidently he had died by the 1880 Census, because Rebecca is listed as the head of a household (HH#326) and widowed. Her son Severn, age 16, an oysterman, was living with her. In the later part of her life she lived in the little house behind her son's home and general store on Saxis. Mrs. Rebecca Crockett, aged 65 years and widow of William Crockett, died Tuesday, 10 Jun 1902 at her home on Saxis of heart trouble (Pen. Ent., 14 Jun 1902). Although she died in 1902, she was not listed in the 1900 Census on Saxis and her grave is not marked by a tombstone. In an interview in the winter of 1977, Mrs. Lovie (Bonawell) Marshall (1891-1981), age 85 at the time of the interview and age 11 at the time of Rebecca's death, related the following about "Aunt Becky" to Kathryn (Drewer) Miles and her son M.K. "Aunt Becky didn't have it very good, I'll tell you. Her little house didn't have no upstairs to it and it just had cardboard inside. Didn't have no ceiling and it was papered with heavy cardboard inside. There never was one any better than she was. I loved her, I never knew the love of a grandmother, but I loved her like a grandmother, and she loved me. She taken to me and when she died I thought I would go crazy. I was round about, I guess, 12 years old. And I cried night and day, I snubbed myself to sleep. Mama would say sometimes, Lovie, I believe you loved Aunt Becky better than you did me. I said, Mom, no I don't. When I was up to Stella's, she was cooking, if it was fish or vegetable soup, she would always take mine out and put in that cupboard and look at me and nod her head. She's buried in the Ellis Cemetery. Now there may be a tomb there to her grave, I couldn't tell you that. As you go down that lane by Lena Glenn's, she's buried on this side, facing the outlet. But she was a beloved person by everybody." Rebecca was born circa 1837 at Baltimore, MD.¹ She was the daughter of John Drewer and Susan Simpson. Rebecca was listed with another family in the cenus of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Rebecca Drewer, age 13 in HH#793 headed by Gillet Marshall, a 47 year old farmer. Also listed was Wm. Russell, a 30 year old laborer, who was evidently her step-father. This was on Saxis Island..² She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.³ She married Severn James Crockett Sr. on 10 August 1861 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1870 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁴ She married William T. Crockett on 24 May 1873 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William Crocket, a 25 year old oysterman, the son of George & Sina Crocket and she was shown as Rebecca Crocket, age 25 and widowed, the daughter of Susan Druer. They were married at Sykes Island by Montcalm Oldham..⁵ Rebecca reported a death on 19 November 1879 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. It was on this date that Rebecca Crockett reported the death of her husband, Wm. Crockett, who drowned at the age of 38 years..⁶ Rebecca died on 10 June 1902 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁷

     Severn was born circa 1828 at Accomack Co, VA.² He was the son of George Crockett and Sinah D. Evans. Severn was listed with his parents in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Severn Crockett, a 22 year old laborer in HH#806 headed by George Crockett, a 51 year old farmer. This was on Saxis Island..³ He married Mary (-----) circa 1856.⁴ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.⁵ He married Rebecca Ann 'Becky' Drewer on 10 August 1861 at Accomack Co, VA.⁶ Severn died before 1870.⁷

     George Crockett's land was valued in the 1850 Census at $1,000, in 1860 at $2,000 and in 1870 at $2,500. He was listed as a farmer in all three Census, although most men on Saxis at that time were oystermen. He must have died before 1880, as he was not found in the 1880 Acc Co Census. George was born circa 1799 at Accomack Co, VA.³ He was the son of John Crockett Sr. and Elizabeth 'Betsy' (-----). He married Sinah D. Evans on 21 January 1825 at Accomack Co, VA. Josiah Crockett, Tyler Crockett & Richard D. Bayly were the securities on the M.L.B. of George Crockett of Jno. and Sinah Evans of Geo..⁴ George was named in his father's will on 19 January 1833 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son George Crockett in the will of John Crockett, and was given all my land on Sexes Island by him paying $200 to my son Annanias's heirs when they come to age..² George was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as George Crockett, the head of HH#806, a 51 year old farmer with real estate valued at $1,000. Listed with him were the following Crocketts: Sinai, age 40; Severan, a 22 year old laborer; Mary, age 18; John, a 16 year old sailor; Riley, age 14; Wm., age 10 and Ann E., age 8. This was on Saxis Island..⁵ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.⁶ He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1870 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.⁷ George died circa 1875.

     The 1850 Census listed her as Sinai, as did her son's marriage record. However, the 1860 Census listed her as Sarah D. and listed her as the same age, 40, as she was in the 1850 Census. Her death record, 1862, listed her as Sinah. The cause of death was consumption. Sinah was born circa 1810 at Accomack Co, VA.² She was the daughter of George Evans and Nellie E. Tyler. She married George Crockett on 21 January 1825 at Accomack Co, VA. Josiah Crockett, Tyler Crockett & Richard D.      James was born circa 1885 at Somerset Co, MD.¹ He was the son of James H. White and Margaret R. 'Maggie' Bozman. James was living in 1913 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ He married Cassie A. Martin on 13 October 1913 at Mekemie Park, Acc Co, VA.¹

     Edwin was born circa 1892 at Somerset Co, MD.¹ He was the son of James H. White and Margaret R. 'Maggie' Bozman. He married Verndine Selby on 26 October 1913 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Edwin White, a 21 year old waterman, born in Somerset Co & living in Acc Co, the son of James & Maggie White and she was shown as Verndine Selby, age 21, born in Worcester Co, MD & living in Acc Co, the daughter of John & Ellen Selby..¹

     Verndine was born circa 1892 at Worcester Co, MD.¹ She was the daughter of John S. Selby and Mary Ellen L. Payne. She married Edwin White on 26 October 1913 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.
