Thomas Simpson Sr.
M, b. circa 1660, d. January 1726
Thomas was born circa 1660. Thomas appears on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1685. He was listed in Capt. John Wallop's Precincts as Tho. Simpson with 3 tithes. In 1686 he was listed in Major Bowman's Precincts with 3 tithes. This was apparently not a relocation on his part, but a subdivision of Capt. Wallop's Precincts as most of the others in Major Bowman's Precincts were also in Capt. Wallop's Precincts the prior year. In 1687 he was listed in Capt. Hill's Precincts with 4 tithes. Being on Capt. Hill's list was probably the result of a relocation as many of his neighbors, like Roger Miles and Richard Bundick, were still on Capt. Wallop's list. In 1688 he was listed again in Capt. Hill's Precincts with 5 tithes, but in 1689 he was back on Major Bowman's list, again with 5 tithes. In 1690 he was still on Major Bowman's list, but with only 3 tithes. In 1691 he was back on Capt. Wallop's list, again with 3 tithes. In 1692 he was on Mr. Jo. Robinson's list with only 1 tithe. He was not on any list in 1693, but on Mr. Ed. Custis's list in 1694 with only 1 tithe. This did not reflect a relocation as many of his past neighbors, like Roger Miles and Richard Bundick were on this same list. He was again on Mr. Ed. Custis's list in 1695 with only 1 tithe. During this 10 year period (1685-1695), he was the only Simpson listed. The fact that the tithes started at 3, then increased to 5 and then dropped to 1 can be misleading. Since tithes were to represent males age 16 and up in good health (able to work), either sons, lives-ins, or slaves, its not possible to determine the ages of his sons from these listing, other than to presume none of them had reached the age of 16 by 1695. Therefore, his oldest son could not have been born before 1680..1 Thomas bought land in 1689 at Accomack Co, VA. He bought the Francis Johnson half of Whitelaw's tract A104, which is south-east of the present town of Parksley, from Francis Johnson, Negro. In 1708 Thomas and Sarah Parker sold the other half of tract A104 to Thomas Simpson, who thus became possessed of the whole tract. In 1726 he bequeathed the land as follows: to his son Thomas, 225 acres which formed the southwestern part and included the strip extending to the highway below tract A103; to his son John, 200 acres which he called the home plantation, lying above Thomas's part and extending up to the crossroad; and to son William, 50 acres which he also called a part of the home plantation..2 Thomas was living on 20 October 1689 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Adam Michael left to his kinsman Henry Custis (son of his brother John Custis) 1,000 acres at 'Matomkin' in Accomack Co, whereon Thomas Simson now lives. This was Whitelaw's tract A94, which is north-east of the present day town of Accomac..3 Thomas deeded land as a gift in 1720 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Thomas gave 200 acres of Whitelaw's tract A114, which he acquired from William and Margaret Darter, to his son William. The land comprised all of the extension at the southeast corner of the tract and lay between the present main road in Parksley and the head northern branch of Hunting Creek, which later became known as the Parish Branch..4 He made a will on 6 January 1726 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Thomas 'Simson' 225 acres purchased of Thomas Parker, also 50 acres purchased of Peter Claywell. To son William 'Simson' 200 acres purchased of William Darter, also 50 acres where I now live, also 112 and 1/2 acres of marsh. To son John 'Simson' 200 acres where I now live, also 112 and 1/2 acres of marsh. Daughter Sarah 'Simson'. To the poor of the Parish 1,000 lbs of tobacco or £5 money. 9 children: Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, Rachel, William, Patience, John & Sarah residual legatees. Sons Thomas, William and John executors. Wittnesses John Tankred, John Oakley, Mark Littleton..5 Thomas died in January 1726 at Accomack Co, VA.5 Thomas's will was probated on 2 February 1726 at Accomack Co, VA.5
