George Thomas

George was born circa 1710. He married Bridget (-----) circa 1728.1,2 George bought land in 1732 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year that George Thomas bought land in Northampton County. He gave that property to his son John and moved to upper Accomack County where he bought land on the seaside of the peninsula, across the inlet from Wallops Beach, and in 1746 bought 300 acres at Pigg Point on the Pocomoke River. His Accomack County seaside home was left to his son George and in 1812 was sold by a grandson, George Thomas, to John Wharton. It became known as Mount Wharton. The older part of the house at Mount Wharton is believed to have been build by George Thomas..3 He made a will on 25 January 1772 at Accomack Co, VA. To son John Thomas plantation where he lives that I bought of Jonathan More, containing 150 acres, also 100 acres purchased of Jonathan Edmonds. To son George Thomas plantation where I now live purchased of John Gibson, containing 500 acres, and in case he should die and his daughter without having no heirs (but not cuting off his son if please God he should ever again marry and have one), then I give the above land to my son Levin Thomas. To son Levin plantation at Pigg Point purchased of Jacob White containing 300 acres and for want of heirs to my son John Thomas. To son-in-law John Tankard 20 shillings. Grandson Harrison Thomas, son of John Thomas 20 shillings. To Houson Mapp and Betty, his wife 50£ current money. To Ralph Corbin and Sarah his wife the effects and money they have had of me in my lifetime to be accounted for in the division of the estate as a part of their equal division. To Jedday Tunnell and Anne his wife, they to account for the effects they have already had. The inventory of his personal estate, with an appraised value of 1,169£ included, among other items, 1 large walnut oval table, 11 black chairs, 1 walnut case of drawers, 1 small walnut oval table, 1 large walnut desk, 1 smaller walnut desk, 1 small desk, 1 looking glass, 2 Delph punch bowls, 1 Delph dish, 12 Delph plates, 1 Delph bowl, many pewter dishes and bowls, many earthen ware dishes and bowls, brass candlestick, copper coffee pot, 1 Bible and prayer book, seven books, 2 sail boats, 1 canoe, 1 punt, 1 fishing boat, money scales, 45 hogs, 4 bulls, 22 cows, 2 steers, 5 heads of cattle, 4 mares, 2 old horses, 7 yokes oxen, tools of all kinds, many bushels of corn, wheat, peas, beans, bags of meal and sacks of oats, and 1,946 pounds of tobacco. Unless requested that there was to be no appraisal, most estates in the county were appraised. There was no sale of the personal estate, but when there was such a sale, the price paid for necessary articles was frequently higher then the appraised value, while nice China and other choice articles went for a lower price, unless they were bought by a member of the family, when they frequently sold for more then the appraised valued..5

To daughters: Sarah Corbin (one tead chest, one purple and white Chinese gown, one Holland stripped gown that Sarah had made marked on the bosom with the two first letters of my name and one stiff gown), Ann Tunnell (one tea kettle, one blue cloak, one fine shift with a little "T" on the bosom and one plaid gown), and Betty Mapp (one blue and white striped petticoat and my riding gown).
