Miranda J. Crockett, age 4, (b.c. 1856) was in the 1860 househould (#365) of John Spense and his wife was Ann. It is assumed that this is the Miranda J. Spence, who married Severn J. Miles in 1874 and listed her parents as Maria Spence. She would have been Maria's child before Maria married Robert Marshall in 1858. Her father, a Crockett, could have died before Maria's marriage to Robert Marshall. Since Maria is listed as single and not widowed at the time of her marriage to Robert Marshall, it is possible that Maria did not marry Miranda's father. If Miranda's father died before she was married, this would also explain why she did not list him as a parent when she was married. Her being the daughter of Maria is further proved by being listed in several of her 1/2 brother's obituaries: as "Amanda Miles" (w/o Severn J. Miles), a surviving (1/2) sister to William Marshall in his obituary of 1931 (Pen. Ent., 17 Oct 1931); as "Maud Miles" a surviving (1/2) sister to Samuel J. Marshall in his obituary of 1932 (Pen. Ent., 17 Sep 1932); and as "Amanda Miles" a surviving (1/2) sister to David Marshall in his obituary of 1933 (Pen. Ent., 23 Dec 1933). Mrs. Amanda J. Miles died at Crisfield on 16 Apr 1949, aged 93 years. She was born on 21 Jan 1856 at Saxis Island. She was buried at Saxis. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 29 Apr 1949). Miranda was born on 21 January 1856 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. Her tombstone shows she was born in 1857..2,3 She was the daughter of (-----) Crockett and Maria Spence. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA.4 She married Severn J. Miles on 18 October 1874 at Pocomoke Neck, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Severn J. Matilda Emily Spence1

In an interview with her grand duaghter, Lovie (Bonawell) Marshall, in 1977, she (Matilda Emily) was identified as a daughter of John Spence. It should be noted that, Lovie was born almost 30 years after Matilda's death and Lovie's information was based on what she was told by her mother Amanda "Mendie." However, it does tend to substantiate the Acc death record. However, the other option is that Matilda was the 10-15 year old daughter of Aaron Marshall, Sr. in the 1840 Census. She would have been 14 in the 1840. This assumption is based on two facts: 1) Revel J. Lewis, 27, and wife Matilda, 24, were living next door to "Dennard" Marshall in 1850 (Denard was the first son of Aaron Marshall, Sr.) and 2) Revel J. Lewis married Elishia A.M. Marshall on 29 Jan 1845 (Acc Mar Reg #1, p. 75). There are several possibilities that could explain this conflict. One would be that Revel J. Lewis married Elishia Marshall, daughter of Aaron, in 1845, she died very shortly thereafter and he then married Matilda Spence later that year. The timing would have had to have been that close, because their first child, Amanda "Mendie" was born 16 Mar 1846. The other possibility would be that Matilda's full name would have been Elishia A. Matilda Spence and that she married a Marshall, who died, and then she married Revel J. Lewis in 1845, and was listed on the marriage record by her married name instead of her maiden name. However, both of these possibities involve other marriages by either Matilda or Revel and neither of them has been found. As far as tracing all the descendants of the Bayside Marshall's are concerned, it makes little difference because in either case the descendants of Revel and Matilda are included. This is because Revel himself was the grandson of Samuel Marshall, Sr. (through his mother "Milly" Marshall, daughter of Samuel, Jr., son of Samuel, Sr.) and Matilda, if she were a daughter of Aaron Marshall, would have been also been a grand daughter of Samuel Marshall, Sr. (through her father Aaron, son of James, son of Samuel, Sr.). If Matilda was the daughter of Aaron, she would have married her 2nd cousin, Revel Lewis. Matilda was born circa 1826 at Accomack Co, VA.2 She was the daughter of John Spence and Leah Anna Handy Guy. She married Revel James Lewis circa 1845 at Accomack Co, VA.3 Matilda was listed with her husband in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Matilda Lewis, age 24 in HH#801 headed by Revel J. Lewis, a 27 year old farmer. This was on Saxis Island..4 Matilda died on 18 October 1856 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as Mitild Lewis, who died at the age of 30 years. She was the daughter of John Spence and the wife of Revel J. Lewis, who gave the information. The record was filed 9 Jul 1857 (Acc Co Register of Deaths, 1853-70, p. 13, ln. 11)..1 Her body was interred at Lewis Burial Gr, Doe Creek, Acc Co, VA.5
