Jos E. Bell witness. They were married on 16 Mar 1836 by W.B. Snead..2 Charles was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1850 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as Charles West the head of HH#347, a 35 year old farmer with real estate value at $20,000. Listed with him were the following Wests: Elizabeth, age 36; William, age 13; Margaret, age 10; Mary, age 7; Charles, age 5; Elizabeth A., age 3; Joanna, age 1; and Emily, age 1/12. Also listed were Margaret Tatum, age 25 and George Poulson, age 23..3

John (1) Wilkins

M, b. 1599, d. 28 January 1651
     John was born in 1599 at England. He was aged 26 in the muster of Jan 1624/5. He also deposed on 16 May 1636 that he was aged 40..1 He married Bridget Croft in 1624.2 John patented land on 9 September 1636 at Nansemond Co, VA. His first patent of record was on this date which was in the Upper County of New Norfolk, mistakenly given as Accomack, but corrected in a repatent of 18 May 1637. The 1300 acres along the Nansemond River fell inton Nansemond County in 1642. The headrights included himself, Bridget Craft (his wife, then dead) and John Wilkins again. in addition to the voyage indicated by the second headright claim, John is known to have made a voyage to England in 1637, another overseas in 1642 and on to Amsterdam and England in 1649. John Wilkins sold 800 acres of this land to Michael Wilcox whose widow Eleanor married Samuel Stoughton, who repatented the 800 acres on 10 Mar 1645/6..1 He married Anne (-----) in January 1637.2 John patented land on 10 March 1638 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that he was granted 500 acres in Accomack County, joining the upper end of the Secretary's land, King's Creek and land of Obedience Robins, and in 1643 he patented 600 acres on the seaside by virtue of a former patent of 8 Dec 1640. He was elected to the vestry of Hungar's Parish on 14 Sep 1635 and served as a burgess for Accomacke in Feb 1632/3 and in 1642. In 1642/3 the Eastern Shore was divided and his home fell into Northampton County. John was almost continuously a commissioner in Accomack-Northampton until his death..1 He made a will on 23 December 1649 at Northampton Co, VA. He left his whole estate to his wife Ann and his children which God hath blessed me with by her. He stated he was about to sail for England and no one could tell the future. But he did return for Anne Wilkins in a deposition on 28 Jan 1650/1 referred to Mr. John Wilkins her late husband dec'd since he came from England about the time he lay sick. Just before he died John Wilkins gave land, stock and household goods to John Baldwin and his wife, of which a memorandum was made on 30 Dec 1650 and on 9 Feb 1650/1 Anne Wilkins, widow, made a deed of gift to her children, naming the son and designating the 3 daughters who are named in her will..2 John died on 28 January 1651 at Northampton Co, VA.1

It was on this date that he patented 300 acres in Northampton County, claiming himself as a headright. He is not to be confused with John Baldwin who came to Virginia in the Tyger in Oct 1622, but may have been the John Baldwin, aged 27, who left Gravesend, England, in the Primrose on 27 Jul 1635. The land was on Occohannocke and Compekeeke creeks. He assigned this land to Benjamin Mathews, who repatented it on 2 Oct 1654..1 He married Mary (2) Wilkins in December 1650 at Northampton Co, VA.1 John patented land in 1664 at Maryland. It was in this year that he recieved patents in Maryland for "Baldwin's Addition" of 120 acres and 70 acres in South River Hundred, Anne Arundel County. The "Descendants of John Wilkins" suggests the possibility that she was the widow of Obidence Roberts, who left will 26 Oct 1709 - 28 Nov 1709 in N'hamp Co, naming a wife Elizabeth, but no children and gave a plantation to his brother Thomas Roberts. This land was sold by Argoll Wilkins in 1712.
