There is no absolute proof that George P. Bonnewell was the son of Peter Bonnewell and his wife Elizabeth Hall. However, Elizabeth made purchases at Peter's estate sale and was later listed as a head of household in the 1830 and 1840 census in Accomack Parish. In one of those census she showed a son of the right age to have been George P. Bonnewell, who would have been born the year before his father died. Also, all other possibilities have been eliminated. George was born circa 1823 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He was the son of Peter Bonnewell and Elizabeth S. 'Betsy' Hall. He married Ellen (-----) circa 1842.2 George was named in a deed in on 1 December 1849 at Saxis, Acc Co, VA. On 1 Dec 1849 John H. He was shown as George P. Bonnewell, the head of HH#545. He was a 27 year old laborer with real estate valued at $275. Bonnewells listed with him were Ellen, age 33; William, age 7; George T., age 5; and Rachel A., age 3. His neighbors were Edward Anderton and Obed S. The 1810 Census also lists Jesse Miles as a head of family. Free white males included 1 under age 10, and 1 between age 26 and 45. Free white females included 2 under age 10, 2 between age 10 and 16, and 1 between age 26 and 45. Jessey is assumed to be the oldest free white male, born 1765-84. The 1820 Census also shows him as a head of family. Free white males included 1 under age 10, 1 between age 16 and 18, 1 between 16 and 26, and 1 over age 45. Free white females included 3 under age 10, 1 between age 10 and 16, 2 between age 16 and 26, and 1 between age 26 and 45. Jessey is assumed to be the oldest free white male, born before 1775. The ranges of Jessey's births: 1755-74, 1765-84, and before 1775 have a common overlap between them of 1765-1775. Based on these dates, the best guess at his birth is circa 1770. Since he is not listed in the 1830 Census as a head of family, it is assumed that he died between 1820 and 1830. Therefore, his death is shown as circa 1825.
