He entered the 9th Virginia Regiment on 10 Feb 1776; was promoted to Captain 31 Aug 1776; taken prisoner at Germantown, 4 Oct 1777; exchanged 2 Nov 1780; retained in 2nd Virginia 12 Feb 1781, with rank of Major from 9 Dec 1779, and served to the close of the war. According to Shippen: Margaret Ker (althought Shippen had the wrong Margaret) married Mr. Snead, of Accomac County, and had one son, Smith Snead, Esqr., who married Miss Dennis and left three daughters and two sons. One daughter, Susan Dennis Snead, married Mr. Charles Snead, and resides in Baltimore, MD, and has one daughter, Susan Dennis Snead. The others included: Margaret Ker Snead, unmarried; Elizabeth Snead, died; Edward Snead, died; and _____ Snead, died..4,5,6,2 He made a will on 18 October 1792 at Northampton Co, VA. To my wife [no name] during her life the land I bought of Willam Waterfield's administrator, £25 per year to keep my children, negroes Edmund, Levin, Ladies, Cate, and Newberry and her two children, a dressing table called hern[sic], riding chair and a mare called "Sally Trimmer," and 200 bushels of oats. To my daughter Sarah Christian Snead (not of lawful age) the dressing table that was her mother's. To child my wife goes with the certificates in the possession of Major Parker or the money they sell for. To my son Charles the land I now live on, also the land bought of William Waterfield's adminstrator, and all other lands that I own in any place whatever, my books and writing desk. To my sister Elizabeth Snead £20 and my share of the lot in Onancock Town formerly belonging to George Snead. Residual legatees all my children. My brother William Snead and friend Thomas Usphur, Jr. Extrs.
