Edward Thornton (I)

M, b. circa 1650, d. September 1703
Edward was born circa 1650. Edward bought land in 1677 at Accomack Co, VA. It appears that all Accomack County Throntons are descended from an Edward Thornton, who purchased 250 acres of Whitelaws tract A140 in 1678. This was land described by John Stockley in his will of 1673 as one neck of land to the northward of Christopher Stanley's plantation, which I give to my wife Elizabeth to be at her own disposing. In 1674 she sold 100 acres at the south end to Edward Vaughan. She then married John Stratton of Northampton County and the next year (1675) they sold the balance as 250 acres to James Powell, who resold to Edward Thornton three years later (1678). This was located north of the present road from Temperanceville to Atlantic, probably nearer the road from Horsey to Atlantic..1 He married Patience (-----) circa 1677.2 Edward appears on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1679. He was shown as Edw'd Thornton, with one tithable. Jno. Stratton and Edw'd Vahun were on the list near him..3 Edward witnessed a will in 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. In either late 1682 or early 1683 William Stockley, John Stratton & Edward Thornton witnessed the will of Edward Vahan, who left his daughter Elizabeth the plantation where I now live.
.4 Edward sold land in 1685 at Accomack Co, VA. In 1683 Edward Vahan (wife Ann) left a 150 acre plantation to his daughter Elizabeth, this being 50 acres more than he had bought, but two years later Edward Thornton sold 50 acres to Elizabeth, so perhaps her father had contracted for it before his death. This was part of Whitelaw's tract A140..1 Edward appears on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1690. He was shown on Mr. Tho. Welburne's precints list as Edw'd Thronton, with 1 tithable..5 Edward appears on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1691. Capt. Wallop's precincts for 1691 showed Edw'd Thorneton with 1 tithable..6 Edward appears on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1692. He was shown as on Capt. Wallop's precincts list as Edw'd Thronton, with 1 tithable..7 He made a will on 6 May 1703 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Edward Thornton 100 acres where I now live. Son Thomas. Son Jonathan. To son William 100 acres being the other 1/2 of my 200 acres. Wife Patience residual legatee & Exec. Sons under 18 - Daughters (no names) under 16 - Witt: Thomas Perry, Nathaniel Rackcliffe, Jr., Joseph Staton, Jr. (Note: Mary Frances Carey's Thorton file shows Edward Thornton's will of 1703 names a fifth son as James, who is not in Nottingham's will book.) It appears that present day Thorntons on the mainland of the Eastern Shore can be traced back to either son Edward or William Thornton. According to Whitelaw, Edward got the southern part and William got the northern part of the original tract. All the Thorntons of Chincoteague can be tracted back to their brother James Thornton..2 Edward died in September 1703.2 Edward's will was probated on 6 October 1703 at Accomack Co, VA.2

William was born circa 1694 at Accomack Co, VA. He was the son of Edward Thornton (I) and Patience (-----). William was named in his father's will on 6 May 1703 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son William Thornton (under age 18) and given 100 acres in the will of Edward Thornton..1 He married Sarah (-----) (wid. of Nathaniel Tunnell) circa 1740. In describing the ownership of tract A140, land between Mappsville and Temperanceville, Whitelaw notes that after Nathaniel Tunnell died in 1739, his wife Sarah married William Thornton. In 1754 there was an involved land suit against William and Sarah Thornton, who were in possession of part of this tract. It resulted in a General Court deed from Woodman Stockley III to Sarah and William Thronton in trust for her son William Tunnell. The title was transferred to William Thornton Jr. (Whitelaw indicates that he was a son of Sarah and William Thornton, but he was probably older than Sarah's son William Tunnell, as so was William Thornton Sr.'s son before he married Sarah) during the life of Sarah and then it was to go to his step-brother, William Tunnell, who finally in 1778 (wife Mary) left to his son Nathaniel..2,3 He made a will on 14 November 1758 at Accomack Co, VA. To son William. To son David Thornton. Son Thomas Thornton. Grandaughter Jacaman Thornton. Wife Sarah. Daughter Mary Thorp. Two elder sons Exrs. Witt: Bartholomew Taylor, Mary Broadwater, Mary Tunnel, Thomas Matthews. Although his will (wife Sarah) did not mention land, but he was succedded by a son William; however, the son died intestate the next year, his estate being Administered to his wife Anne. Both before and after the turn of the century, a Joshua Thornton was shown by surveys and bounds of adjacent lands to have been the owner, so he may have been the son of the last William..2,4 William died in November 1758.2 William's will was probated on 28 November 1758 at Accomack Co, VA. William Thornton, heir at law to the testator, & David Thornton qualified.

Edward was born circa 1755 at Accomack Co, VA. He was the son of John Thornton and Rachel Warrington. Edward was named in his grandfather's will on 8 November 1759 at Accomack Co, VA. Although he was not actually named in his grandfather Edward Thornton Sr.'s will written 8 Nov 1759, he was named at probate on 27 Nov 1759, as William Beavans was named guardian to Edward Thornton, infant heir at law to the testator. This implies that his father John (wife Rachel) had died since his grandfather wrote his will, and being the oldest son of the oldest son, he became the heir at law, and being underage, a guardian was appointed. He could not have been the son Edward named in the will, as that Edward was named an Extr. and would have been of age to have been given that responsibility..1 He married Rachel (-----) (wid. of Washburn Tunnell) circa 1775. In describing the ownership of tract A173 (between Wattsville and Atlantic), Whitelaw states that in 1757 Scarburgh Tunnell (wife Elizabeth) left land to his son Washpan (Washburn), and in 1772 he (wife Rachel) left to his brother Charles. Rachel then married Edward Thornton and 6 years later they released her dower interest to Charles, who in 1816 left his land to a son Samuel S. Tunnell. According to Mary Frances Carey, Rachel's maiden name was Warrington..2,3 He made a will on 2 January 1782 at Accomack Co, VA. Wife Rachel Thornton Exec. To wife whole estate during her widow To son Henry Thornton the place where I now live, & should he offer to sell the land my son John to have it; my desire is that it shall continue in the same name, and for my son John to bequeath it to his proper heirs. 2 sons Henry & John residual legatees. Should my wife be with child that child to have things equal in value to what I have left my son John, & the rest of my estate to be divided between all three. Witt: John Warrington, William Burton, Rachel Thornton..2 He married Mary Feddeman circa 1784. In ther order of probate of the will of Edward Thornton (wife Rachel), Mary Thornton qualified. His will was written in 1782 and probabted in 1795. Evidently his wife Rachel had died and he had remarried..4 Edward died in January 1795.2 Edward's will was probated on 26 January 1795 at Accomack Co, VA. In order of probate: "Mary" Thornton qualified..2 Edward was named in a land cause on 4 November 1795 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that a land cause was recorded as follows: Writ of Partition, Edward Thornton, Inf't., by William Warrington his guardian appointed to defend this suit vs Henry Thornton. Whereas one Henry Thornton, father of the said Edward & Henry, was lately seized of 100 acres of land in the Parish of Accomack, and being so thereof seized on the 2 Jan. 1782, made his last will & testament and devised the said premises by the description of the place where he lived, to the said Henry, and being so seized died, by virtue whereof the said Henry entered into the said premises - That the said Edward Thornton, father of the said Edward & Henry, at the time of his death had children to-wit; the said Henry & John & also his wife enscient, who after his death brought a posthumous child, the said Edward, who was unprovided for by settlement, & neither provided for nor disinherited &c.
.5 Edward land was surveyed in 1796 at Accomack Co, VA. A survey made the year after his will was probated showed 146 acres, of which the south part of 49 acres went to Edward Thornton and the balance of 97 acres to Henry Thornton..6

In his will of this date, Joseph Blake left son Charles Blake 165 acres where I now live & for want of issue to unborn child & for want of heirs to Rachel Wilson. Jonathan Thornton to have free possession of a parcel of land on Jengoteague Branch where he now lives for 14 years, being 150 acres provided he pay the Quit Rents & plant 150 apple trees, and after the expiration of the said 14 years I give the said land to my unborn child & for want of heirs to my brother in law John Morris. To brother Gilbert Morris. Wife Rebecca & brother Dennis Blake Exrs. Witt: Uriah Collins, William Watts, John Melten. According to Whitelaw (tract A174) this could have been the same land that John Blake sold to John Collins Sr. in 1704 and was located on the water, between Atlantic and Wattsville..3,4 Jonathan died before 29 April 1746. It was on this date that Jonathan Thornton, orphan of Jonathan deceased, was bound to Isaac McHenny until he became 18 years of age. This first Jonathan Thornton left no will, nor is there an account of the administration of his estate. Since he left an orphan, he had evidently married and likely had other sons who were over age 18 at the time of his death. One of these was evidently William Thornton, whose descendants have been found in the area of Wallops Neck and would have included a William Thornton of Charles, who married Polly Rowley (m. 1820), widow of William Rowley (m. 1809), and who was the widow of John Young when she married William Rowley. Another son was evidently James Thornton. From tracing other lines, it has been noted that the name Jonathan often turned into John, a name that seems to persist in this line..5

Sarah (-----) (wid. of Nathaniel Tunnell)

Sarah was born circa 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. She married Nathaniel Tunnell circa 1725.1 Sarah was named in her husband's will on 5 April 1739 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as wife Sarah in the will of Nathaniel Tunnell..1 She married William Thornton (I) circa 1740. (Whitelaw indicates that he was a son of Sarah and William Thornton, but he was probably older than Sarah's son William Tunnell, as so was William Thornton Sr.'s son before he married Sarah) during the life of Sarah and then it was to go to his step-brother, William Tunnell, who finally in 1778 (wife Mary) left to his son Nathaniel..2,3 Sarah was named in her husband's will on 14 November 1758 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as wife Sarah in the will of William Thornton..2

It was on this date that James Thornton was named to settle the estate of John Collins..2 James bought land on 13 July 1736 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James Thornton bought 600 acres for 1500 lbs of Tobacco from Samuel Taylor and wife Jeminia. The land began at the mouth of Gingoteague Inlet, which marsh and hammocks are commonly called Samuel Taylor's Island, alias William's Island. The deed states that the sale included houses, buildings, orchards, fences, woods, etc. The location of this land sounds like it was near where Jonathan Thornton was living in 1732. Even if it cannot be exactly located today, the purchase of island land near Wallops Neck indicates that the Thorntons of Chincoteague Island were of this line..3 James sold land on 25 January 1740 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James Thornton, planter, sold to Thomas Townsend, son of Henry, for 5 lbs, 300 acres of "marshy lands lying and being in the aforesaid county near Jingoteague Inlet commonly called and known by the name of Samuel Taylor's Marsh."
