William Wessells Sr.

     In 1768 William Vessells bought 100 acres of A149 (the Wessells farm on Messongo Creek) from John and Rhoda Potter, being the northwest corner of the tract. Four years later Vessells bought 125 acres north of it (from A147) from Spencer and Comfort Drummond. In 1803 William Vessells left to his wife Egnatia the small room in my dwelling house and the small chamber above and a privilege of passing from the one to the other through the house; to his son Walter he left the rest of the house and his 225 acre plantation. In 1837 Walter Wessells (wife Polly Boston) left to his son Henry (L.) the western part of his land where my dwelling house now stands. In 1883 Henry L. left to his nephew John H.S. Wessells, who died intestate in 1936; a son Henry L. was in residence, although the estate had not been divided late in 1937, when the dwelling (shown in Whitelaw) burned to the ground (Whitelaw, p. 1270). In 1772 William Wessells, who owned adjacent land from A149, bought 125 acres of A147 (near Hallwood) from Spencer Drummond II and his wife Comfort (Whitelaw, p. 1261). William Vessels Sen. is listed as a head of an 1800 household, age over 45 (50) with a wife, also over 45 (Nasha, 50), one male 16-26 (Walter Sr, 25), and 8 slaves. In his will written 2 Nov 1802 he named a wife "Egnatia;" sons: Walter and William (land purchased from Spencer Smith); a daughter "Hessey Bird;" a grandson Custis Wessels (under 21); and grandaughters: Elizabeth (Betsy) Thornton, Racheal Thornton and Hessey Thornton. The executors were Elijah Shay and Watlter Wessells; witnesses were Elijah Shay, Valentine Smith and Richard Only; and securites for probate were Valentine Smith and Dixon Hall. William was born circa 1740 at Accomack Co, VA. He married Egnatia 'Nasha' (-----) circa 1765.1,2 William served in the Revolutionary War in in 1775 at Accomack Co, VA. William Vessels (Sic) recommended and qualified as an Ensign in the Militia by taking said oath &c. on 26 Nov 1777 (Acc Orders 1777-1789, p. 43)..3 He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1800 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA.4 William died in 1803 at Messongo, Acc Co, VA.1 William's will was probated on 31 July 1803 at Accomack Co, VA.5
