John was born circa 1680 at Accomack Co, VA. He was the son of James Bonnewell II and Mary Watson. He married Gratiana Michael circa 1700.2 John was named in his grandfather's will on 24 July 1702 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a grandson John Bonwell in the will of Robert Watson..3 John patented land on 16 December 1714 at Onancock, Acc Co, VA. By a deed of 16 December 1714, John Bonwell patented 400 acres of land (Nugent, Vol. III, p. 163). This land was located in Accomack County, "on Eastern Shore of this Colony on north side of Anancock (Onancock) Creek; adjacent to Col. Tully Robinson; & Major John Custis: by William Wise's house; & over Round House Gutn".The record says the land had been escheated from John Nicholls, deceased, and John Bonwell was charged two pounds of tobacco for it. It is obvious this land was the same land that John Bonwell's grandfather bought of John Nicholls in 1663. The title to the land must have been in question and a new patent was issued to clear it. Even in those times, 400 acres of land could not have been bought for two pounds of tobacco. John Bonwell sold 100 acres to brother James Bonwell in 1716, and this was the land James left their mother when he died in 1721 (Deeds, Wills & Etc. 1715-1729, p. 38).. John was named in his brother's will on 14 January 1721 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a brother John Bonewell in the will of James Bonewell..1 He made a will on 19 January 1729 at Accomack Co, VA. To sons John & James Bonwell plantation where I now live containing 400 acres, beginning at the head of a gut called Stevens gut. To son Joachim Mikeall Bonewell 200 acres at the sideside which I had by my wife, it being the land formerly of John Mekeall. Sons Thomas & Richard Bonewell. Personal estate to wife for life and then to my 4 children Thomas, Richard, Ann & Sarah. Wife (no name) & son James Extrs. Witts: John Smith, Daniel Fookes and William Wise Jr..4 John died in March 1729.4 John's will was probated on 1 April 1729 at Accomack Co, VA.4

Gratiana was born circa 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. She was the daughter of John (22) Michael and Anne Tilney. Gratiana was named in her father's will on 12 September 1684 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as a daughter Gratiana (under age 16) in the will of John Michael..1 Gratiana inherited land in 1685 at Accomack Co, VA. Her father John Michael had designated the locations of all the rest of his bequests within tract A70, but could not have been very sure about where to place this piece as he said "where the same shall fall;" it was west of her sister Ann's part and in the southwest corner of the tract. Gratiana married John Bonwell, who survived her. In 1725 Bonwell left to his son Joachim Mikeall Bonwell "the 200 acres which I had by my wife." No disposition by Joachim was noted and the land was later recorded as owned by his brother James, who in 1767 left to his son Michael the 200 acres "which was my mother's maiden land." In 1798 Mickeel and Betty Bonwell sold 131 acres to Ebren Bird and the rest in smaller parcels to Major Hornsby, Matthias Outten and John Bull..2 She married John Bonnewell circa 1700.2 Gratiana was named as an heir on 28 August 1707 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that John Michael of Accomack Co, brother of the dec'd, on behalf of himself, his brother Simon Michael, and his sister Graciana Bonewell, was named to settle the estate of Joakim Michael..3

James was born circa 1658 at Accomack Co, VA. He was the son of James Bonnewell I and Sarah Hickman. He married Mary Watson circa 1680. James died circa 1699. The other children of the second James Bonwell have been determined from the will of his son James Bonwell, the third, who died unmarried in 1721, leaving an only brother John Bonwell to inherit the land and carry on the line (Wills, Deeds & c 1715-1729, p. 320). This James left 100 acres of land to his mother, Mary Huebank. He named sisters as Elisabeth Bonwell, Mary Wise, Sarah Wise and Susanna Mychell and his brother John Bonwell.. James estate was settled on 2 February 1702 at Accomack Co, VA. The inventory and appraisement of his personal property was recorded on 2 February 1702 (Wills & Etc., Part II, 1692-1715, p. 11). This included a long list of household furnishings, tools, a pair of pistols, "cutlass" and a gun, two large Bibles and a small one, sheep, cows, and horses. The inventory was made by John Wise, Senr, John Wise, Junr, John Stanton, and Gervis Baggale. The estate was administered to James Bonwell's widow Mary, who had married Henry Hewbank by the time the inventory was recorded. Nothing is shown here of the children or heirs of this James Bonwell.
