Her sister Susan's obituray showed her maiden name as Bayly, not Chesser. Julia was born circa 1837 at Accomack Co, VA.1 She was the daughter of John Fairfax 'Arfaxey or Faxy' Bayly and Polly Chesser. Julia was listed with her mother in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as 'Julianna Bayly' age 13 in HH#1000 headed by Fairfax Bayly, age 50. Also in this household was her mother Polly Chesser, age 46. Polly Chesser and Fairfax Bayly were apparently not married, as they had different surnames. Evidently Julianna should have been shown as a Chesser, not Bayly..1 She married Capt. Zadock S. Mears on 12 July 1855 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Zadock Mears, age 23 and a sailor, born in Messongo, and she was age 17, also born in Messongo, the daughter of Polly Chesser. They were married at the residence of Arfaxes Bayly by George H. Ewell. Jesse Dickerson said he was over age 21..2 Julia was listed with her husband in the census of in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Julia A. Mears, age 21, in HH#251 headed by Zadock Mears, age 26..3 Julia died on 11 April 1912.4 Her body was interred at Mears Cem, Jenkins Bridge, Acc Co, VA. Her tombstone shows her age at death as 73. If this was correct, she would have been only age 16 at the time of her marriage. According to the 1850 census, she was then age 13 and would have been age 18 when she was married in 1855..4
