Garret Topping

     Garret was born circa 1745 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He married Scarburgh (126) West before 24 September 1771.2 Garret served in the Revolutionary War in in 1776. He was shown as Garret Topping, a Captain in the Militia. The pension application of Hannah Topping, widow of Garret Toppnig, showed she was a widow of Southey Simpson and also of Garett Topping, a Rev. Soldier..3,4 Garret bought land in 1784 at Onancock, Acc Co, VA. It was in this year that Lot No. 10 in Onancock was granted to Garret Topping..5 He married Scarburgh (217) Snead on 22 March 1785 at Accomack Co, VA. Tully Snead was the security on the M.L.B. of Garret Topping and Scarburgh Snead. She was his 2nd wife..6 Garret bought land in 1792 at Slutkill Neck, Acc Co, VA. It was in this year that Garret Topping bought 150 acres (part of Whitelaw's tract A54) from Bennett & George Scarburgh, who left 75 acres each to his sons John S. and Nathaniel S., the later to get "the mannor part of my plantation." The house (Whitelaw's A54E) was known both as the Topping Place and the Dahl's Swamp House. The quaint little house stands well back in the swamp, and it must have been built by Garret Topping soon after his purchase in 1792..7 Garret sold land in 1793 at Onancock, Acc Co, VA.
